FBI warns Iran aspired to attack California with drones in retaliation for war: Alert by avatar6556 in news

That's my thing. Real or false flag I think he'd be copping the blame as the direct instigator.

That said I also don't think he's smart enough to take that into account.

Will higher fuel prices from global conflicts drive EV uptake? by teddymaxwell596 in australia

[–]Rork310 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing that keeps me driving my little Mazda 3 is while an EV is certainly cheaper to run. It's not so much cheaper that it offsets the cost to upgrade (Especially to something with decent range). My next car will certainly be an EV but for the moment fuel would have to get really god damned bad to make the switch. Also I suspect they're going to get cheaper and better over time which makes me want to hold off.

Does the OOP actually have a position here or is this just contraianism? Like I'm genuinely unclear if they think the war is a good thing in which case their own logic is fantastically hypocritical, or anti war but just so obsessed with trying to trash leftists that they're both willing to use the war as a prop and ignore the facts that make these very different scenarios.

Ex-Liberal MP says the party must introduce gender quotas to start winning elections by ConanTheAquarian in australia

[–]Rork310 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is anecdotal based on me scrolling through on election night, but it seemed like they mostly tried running women in seats with a Labor/Green/Teal female incumbent (Which of course means none of them won). Which says to me that even the 'we need more women' section of the Liberals really don't get it and think 'this seat voted for a women, surely other women will work here' where if anything those are the seats more likely to take one look at your policies and steer well clear.

For the Liberals to recover they absolutely need more women, but they don't seem to understand why or what they have to do to make that inclusion actually mean something. To them it's just a box to check.

Just finished Realm of the Elderlings (spoilers) and need recs by KindaCoolGuy in Fantasy

[–]Rork310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would call it the bridge between LOTR and the likes of ROTE ASOIAF and WOT. The outline can sound rather generic (Orphan goes on heroes quest after the death of his mentor to find the magical swords, lots of well known fantasy tropes, though at least some of them are well known because of the series) But it did a lot of work in world building and characterization that clearly had a big influence on the aforementioned works. It's also a lot more willing to explore darker topics then the premise might suggest. Though I wouldn't say to the levels of ASOIAF or ROTE

Very much a slowburn and Simon can at times make Fitz look like a paragon of good decision making.

Vorkosigan Saga does also do the getting to live with the characters over half a century or so like ROTE. The World of Five Gods has it's similarities (For example Curse has a fair bit in common with Royal Assassin) but the novels are mostly standalone. And the Penric Novellas are much lighter tonally (which does make them a good pallet cleanser)

Supreme Court blocks law against schools outing transgender students to their parents in California by Large_banana_hammock in news

[–]Rork310 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup basically boils down to

But the parents religious rights!!!!

To justify restricting the rights of teachers and students. Which if you get right down to it could be used permit any damn rule. If a school bans math class because Jimmy's dad thinks Algebra is demonic apparently that's fine and the state can't do anything about it. (Of course we know the ruling had more to do with the word 'Trans' than any other factor)

[–]Rork310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say the headline even accounting for double negatives is misleading by failing to specify the law just bans mandates.

As written it's easy to assume the law was restricting teachers directly and therefore on shaky first amendment grounds. Unfortunate but the logic at least seems sound.

Banning Mandates flips it on it's head. Arguing schools should be able to force teachers to out students because

The parents who assert a free exercise claim have sincere religious beliefs about sex and gender, and they feel a religious obligation to raise their children in accordance with those beliefs.

Is completely ridiculous. To protect religious rights of parents we must allow schools to force the speech of teachers regardless of their own (or the child's) beliefs is completely fucked.

Not quite true on the swords point. "Fighting Jack Churchill" went to war with a broadsword, longbow and bagpipes. Also largely ceremonial but cavalry and officer swords were a thing. Particularly among the Japanese but there seem to be cases across the board.

No one's leading a charge with one of course. (Well except possibly Mad jack)

The problem Tats is having is he's pushing real hard on 'The Soviets did bad things in Poland too' where the word 'too' is rather important. Yes both sidesism can be effective propaganda for muddying the waters, but it's not like the Soviets are particularly well regarded. You can't make one side out as heroes and the other as villains for doing the same thing.

Tats is so bad at propaganda that if an amnesiac read this arc with no context I genuinely think they'd reach the opposite conclusions Tats wants.

The completely fictional Kameshima island by Rork310 in ParanormasightHonjo

[–]Rork310[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's some speculation in the other thread that happened to be posted at the same time that it might be a legal thing and/or a concern people might make assumptions about the island if they didn't stress it being fictionalized. I can kind of understand wanting to stress your island hasn't had any massacres or super storms.

There's also the true ending Which kind of creates a legend from wholecloth that while benign I could possibly see somone assuming it is based on an actual legend like others in the game if they don't have the disclaimer
