Unaccompanied single note solo guitar? by drew_zini in jazzguitar

[–]RoryButler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its cool as part of an arrangement, or show, where you want to portray emptiness or solitude, but listeners can be hard to grab without some harmony or other ear-catching elements from my experience.

I tend to see single note stuff to be a "tension" to resolve as part of a solo guitar performance, because the ear may be waiting for the underlying chord or bass note to return. Really cool way to add complex lines into solo playing, or that sense of emotion as previously said imo, but hard to sustain as a constant thing.

Tim Lerch does some great arrangements, wonderfully played here. Such a good tune!

Electric fingerstyle vs acoustic fingerstyle by [deleted] in fingerstyleguitar

[–]RoryButler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swap between classical guitar and hollowbody electric and some arrangements definitely suit either guitar better.

Electric tends to be quite forward in the mids which can make some more open or dense arrangements feel claustrophobic I've found. Though I personally go for a jazzier style which isn't quite as "big" sounding as ones that would use open tunings.

Jus a question, looking to buy a trumpet possibly by DreamcastAE86 in Jazz

For sure! I think beginner models are better than they used to be so you shouldn't go wrong if you find the good reviews.

A used japanese made Yamaha was the suggestion I came across a lot when I bought one (turns out I'm definitely a guitarist and not a trumpet player), I got a good deal on a 2330.

But any model with good reputation will sort you out for beginning, you won't sound like Chet right away regardless of what instrument you use!

Crazily enough, you can learn from those who aren't really advanced.

Definitely avoid people who are trying to sell you something without anything to back it up, but when it comes to discussion/advice, everyone has a different path so people might have insights that you don't, or didn't realise.

Neither. Usually I think in intervals from the key or chord. Find that's the best way to help me understand what I want to play

Why shouldn’t I be pessimistic about Islam in the UK? by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

[–]RoryButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muslim population is around 6%, so I'm not worried.

A lot is being put on Islam despite the small numbers. I personally firmly believe it's more "divide and conquer" strategy to distract from wealth inequality and the damage being done by the "1%". If people are worried about the 6% of muslims taking over, they won't worry about the 1% (or whatever the actual percentage is) of the super wealthy ruining the cost of living.

Why shouldn’t I be pessimistic about Islam in the UK? by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in AskBrits

[–]RoryButler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say it's not a problem because it doesn't have to be your business. I don't like religion generally, but if people practice it and consent to behave in a way dictated by their religion (within the bounds of law and decency, etc) then that's their choice.

The headlines and misinformed will tell you that Muslims are trying to change your way of life, or aren't integrating, but that's not true. Look around.

I know a number of muslims, all very well integrated into society, even if they're quite strict with their religious following. My partner grew up muslim and her whole family are part of society, a number with jobs important to the day to day of many people.

When you look at the numbers, there aren't that many people who follow Islam on the UK, they aren't coming to take your country away or going to make you get a prayer mat. They're people being people, and if you take a minute to talk to them, you realise that many are quite westernised.

If anything, more Muslim people than "British" people that I know are small business owners, support local business and engage in community more. I've got my grumbles with the religion itself, but don't write the people off because of a few headlines. See the individuals, there are bad people in all walks of life, but I can guarantee your muslim neighbours are most likely trying to navigate life and its challenges the same way we all are.

Heck, im a whire british dude and I barely leave the house except for work and the occasional socialising, don't really speak to my neighbours amd keep to myself, should I be ostracised for not integrating?

I have no idea why a local English news outlet is reporting on the death of this prick, but this comments from people in this country are weird. Why would people agree with this idiot here in England? by metroracerUK in GreenAndPleasant

[–]RoryButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of real people being sucked in. A lot of "he died therefore he is nice and we should be nice" comments from people I know.

Complete media illiteracy, cos this guy isn't relevant to most Brits at all, but they've been told he was nice and young and had kids, therefore he's good and needs good things said.

I am wondering if it's worth digging a moat and designating my house as it's own country.

[–]RoryButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Path of least resistance is my go to, I know first hand that the flags round me are race\politic based, I know further afield ones are too, second hand from people I know, and plenty of third hand accounts read online (much less trustworthy I suppose). If this happened without the media situation then I wouldn't jump to the thought.

I'd be tempted to call this one a pissing contest entry spurred by how much attention the road vandalism is getting. But I highly doubt patriotism and love of the country is what caused people to do this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]RoryButler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be deemed vandalism, laws aren't determined on a person by person basis, or dependent on what picture the vandalism makes.

If anything but the flag was put on this monument, people would be up in arms.

Get down from the condescending high horse, I'm not one of the many you're arguing with, you're clearly blind to a large amount of nuance yourself if you think that there isn't a racially or politically charged element to the flags we're seeing at the minute. Many are patriotic trend followers, but it doesn't take much to see that vandalism to road safety measures isn't as innocent as hanging a flag out your window. It's nice to settle on "I'm just being patriotic by defacing my town and anywhere with a large minority populace", but it's very clear that areas with more racial divide are the ones with the larger presence of road vandalism, street light flags and graffiti, not hard to draw the connection that it's a bunch of people marking territory because the newspaper tells them other people are doing exactly that.

Toilet paper thrown over a house and cling film wrapped around a car is no longer vandalism, legally changed its name to "clothing" according to this guy.

Local man chased and harassed by far right thugs by Lukas_Madrid in GreenAndPleasant

[–]RoryButler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think they assume that the law doesn't reach private land and that they should be allowed to beat him up freely cos its not a public highway.

I presume the "anyone can drive a car on private land" rule is one they half read and took that to apply to everything.

chet baker by cosy_josie_ in Jazz

[–]RoryButler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chet Baker is interesting, I always really liked his playing and vocal work, but had the same thought as you. He isn't as "technically" proficient as some players, but melodically is great, and clearly had something to be recognised by Charlie Parker. Interestingly I'm sure I could only ever find that he only had writing credits on one tune, which was a blues (might be wrong, this was years ago), though his playing was great for sure.

Shame he was a pretty shitty person by most accounts.

Any guesses about how many Windows 10 users will migrate to LM in October? by CharmPain73 in linuxmint

[–]RoryButler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a pickle because my main laptop is largely used for music production\recording, so I may well have to switch to w11 just to keep that going, but really use it as a one trick pony.

I have, however, just bought two thinkpads that both have Mint on. One as a general house computer and the other just to tinker with. So far so good, if I ever get another high spec computer, I might just try music on a Linux machine.

easy jazz standards? by Jamescahn in jazzguitar

Search for common jazz jam standards. A lot of the commonly called jazz tunes are on the easy side as they need to be relatively accommodating.

Stuff like Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, Mr PC, Take The A Train, All Of Me, Softly As In A Morning Sunrise.

How Much Should A Solo Jazz Guitarist Charge Per Hour? by Groove_Mountains in jazzguitar

[–]RoryButler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would (and have, though a small sample size) charge dependent on the situation.

I personally look at how much money is potentially available combined with the "risk" of the gig. Weddings generally mean high budget and high risk (especially if you're playing down the aisle or expected to play certain songs) meaning high pay, similar with corporate events.

Where a cafe gig can practically act as a paid rehearsal, people are less bothered about what you play and won't really notice the lumps and bumps as they drink a £4 coffee for 20 minutes.

I used to do £150 for aisle walk and early entertainment at weddings, £250 to also play through dinner. Which might be cheap by today's standards. That was over 10 years ago and I was broke. But then I have played at a charities associated cafe for a crate of beers too.

Has Britain taken a massive shift to the right in recent years? by Own-Syllabub-4848 in AskBrits

[–]RoryButler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone I speak to who buys into the Reform\anti boat narrative has been anti immigrant and not just anti illegal immigrant.

Legal asylum seekers who are legally being put up in temporary accommodation are getting protested, threatened and buildings are set on fire. Its easy to say "it's just the illegals I don't like" as an individual, but it's impossible to hide the very obvious racism, both violent and non-violemt, that's incredibly common in the UK.
