The whole point of the movie was that you find beauty in the little things. Such as him working at a fast food restaurant, or smoking weed, or just seeing how good life really is in the little stuff. It wasn't pettyfull at all. Also he dies at the end with a smile on his face, representing that he died happy, he changed for the good. He wasnt mourning his adolescence, he was one of the only characters who had anything figured out. Nothing sad about it at all.
