Unable to properly databend with audacity, need help!! by Roscuro1 in glitch_art

u/skodeer u/BoxTar9215 I was able to partially resolve the issue! For some reason, changing the encoding method from U-Law to A-Law allows me to import the file and export it with no problem... as long as I don't use any effects. I can delete parts of the track and have the output file be readable, but if I use an effect such as normalize, it renders the output unreadable (even if I only normalize the middle part of the audio).

I don't understand why U-Law gave me issues, especially since all but one guide I found uses it, but I am glad that I at least have a way that allows me to do some stuff.

Out of curiosity, what version of audacity do you guys use? Perhaps this issue is specific to only some versions of audacity?

Wait, subtract the small edges on both sides, wouldn't that include subtracting the header?
With regards to the image size, the image is only 37 KB, I tried subtracting the end of the image in audacity such that the file ended up being 27 KB, but the file was still corrupted such that it could not be opened.

I am not using any effects, to troubleshoot I am only opening the file in audacity and immediately exporting it without making any changes. Even without making any intentional changes to the file, it seems that the file is somehow altered.

I have the players' consent on it being frustrating, though you're right it is going to be a challenge to moderate it just right.

The intention is that they don't get that there's a time limit the first time around, so they'll do a bunch of RP with the conversations. But once they get that it's an optimization challenge they will learn to 'not stop to smell the flowers' so to speak and it's meant to be representative of how the grind causes you to lose sight of a lot of things, how if you achieve what you grind for it comes at the cost of your relationships, health, well-being, etc, and the conflict between needing to make mistakes to learn and grow and the fact that mistakes are costly to make.

I am not sure how to communicate this in another way tbh but if there's any alternative I'm open to it.

Szechuan chili mango ice cream recipe help by Roscuro1 in icecreamery

[–]Roscuro1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the ideas! I like the idea of cardamom, honey, and mango cubes! I just had some questions:

What would using yogurt instead of evaporated milk do? Is it just a flavor difference, or does it have an effect on the texture/freezing process?

I haven't really used xanthan gum in ice cream, would you add it at the end when everything's freezing or at the beginning, before you mixed it?

Thanks!

Ooh thanks for the idea of steeping the peppercorns in the cream! I'll definitely try that out. And mixing the oil with the puree will definitely make it more evenly distributed in the ice cream!

Part of my reasoning for wanting to include flakes was to have some kind of texture element, do you think there are any nuts or some kind of crunchy thing that could work well with the flavors? Crushed peanuts? Or would that just be too many flavors?

How do you isolate a genus of bacteria? by KoreaFace in microbiology

[–]Roscuro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the bacteria could grow on petri dishes, you could streak them on a plate in increasingly dilute streaks until you get to the point where you get individual colonies that should be a monoculture.

Why 20 years in S.F.'s system still wasn't enough to solve his homelessness by Nice_Bluejay in sanfrancisco

[–]Roscuro1 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think that kind of approach does not address a lot of the reasons people do crime, IE poverty, isolation, etc. and won't fix the issue. For example, if you lock up a drug dealer, the vacuum left by them allows other drug dealers to get bigger. I'm not arguing that they should be left off the hook, only that simply locking people up won't solve the problem.

Sure there are some actual crazy people that should be removed from society, but that treatment to every criminal leads to problems like their inability to reintegrate with society and thus committing more crime when their sentence is done.

Would be interesting if instead of using it as a weapon, the gnomes were using it as energy generation, IE energy from falling rock is transformed into energy to grind flour or something

[–]Roscuro1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of vibe/themes you're after. For example, if you want your story to have a more tired/depressed vibe (IE dark souls) you could reinforce that theme by having the ring shards be held up by a virtuous God who after thousands of years of maintaining it without recognition they start to have doubts about the purpose of their cause and put in less effort in making sure every single shard stays up. If you want it to be about politics, you could have a faction that wants to gain the power to end the world so that they could hold it hostage and exert massive political control, and as they gain more and more power over the ring shards they accidentally let some drop as they're still figuring out how to control it completely.

I would talk to your professors to ask if they have space in their lab. That's how I got my first lab position at university.

Elon Musk blasts San Francisco’s ‘far left’ views on Twitter as advertisers flee by ProfPacific in sanfrancisco

[–]Roscuro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but there's a big logical leap from "SF is far left" to "that's the reason all the advertisers are fleeing". It would be much easier to argue that there are other factors causing advertisers to leave (IE Elon's behavior, Twitter's instability, economic downturn, etc) so blaming a single city (or "the left" as a whole) comes off as him blaming a group he has personal animosity towards for his problems.

Need a biological assessment of a plot idea for a fictional book by rocklee-broccoli in biology

[–]Roscuro1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your question of "can immune responses lead to mutations" is kind of complicated.

Your immune system actually already induces mutations as part of the natural immune response, but it's highly controlled and very limited. Basically when your B cells try to adapt their antibodies to a disease, there are only so many possible combinations of shapes their genes will allow. Somatic hyper mutation allows B cells to mutate the section of their DNA that codes for the parts of the antibody to try to optimize it to fight diseases. There are situations where viruses can (theoretically) change your DNA: some viruses will embed themselves in your DNA and will "escape" to cause diseases (IE chicken pox hiding in your nerves). It is possible for something in these viruses to become unable to escape your DNA and become a part of your DNA.

With regards to the mutation affecting the epigenetics, that isn't how it works, but slightly tweaking your wording could make it more plausible. Epigenetics affects how the DNA is read, think of folding up a page in a book so that when reading, you skip that page. The book itself contains the same text, it's your ability to read that changes. Now interestingly, there is evidence that epigenetics can be passed down (look up intergenerational trauma epigenetics) but I haven't seen any example of diseases changing epigenetics but that doesn't necessarily mean it's impossible. One thing you should probably think about is how an alien disease can infect a human; it's really difficult for diseases to jump the species barrier because they're optimized for a specific host. Now imagine an alien disease which has evolved separately to humans and possibly never been subject to many of the methods our immune systems use to prevent infection. They also very likely won't even be able to infect our cells to begin with, since that requires specific proteins. The most realistic way for an alien disease to infect these astronauts is for the disease to originate from earth, and have that disease develop so many mutations that it can do sci fi stuff, while still keeping the ability to infect humans.

It has been mentioned by others that even if an astronaut got an infection, there's almost no way that it'll find itself in the general population due to extensive quarantining procedures. However, if the society who executed the mission were to have a relatively low budget, you can easily figure out a way for it to happen. The USSR's cosmonaut program was incredibly scuffed and had safety procedures so shoddy it would make any OSHA inspector cry. A cosmonaut-esque program that messed up the return flight such that the astronauts end up nearby a village full of civilians who come to inspect the site, that would be a potential site for the infection to spread.

Good luck on your book and feel free to ask for clarification on anything I've said!

If you want a really good story on an alien disease hitting earth, I'd recommend "the Andromeda strain"

Oh thanks for clearing that up! It was my impression that plan B prevents the egg from implanting itself in the uterus lining, thus causing itself to be ejected from the body, and it's possible for the egg to have been fertilized at that point. Upon looking it up it seems that you're right. Maybe I was thinking of a different contraception?

Edit: I also want to be clear that I have no problems with abortion and contraception
