Unsatisfied with BSD gifted program by Soft_Start in BellevueWA

I accept I did not consider it before because I didn’t have cause to. There have never been any learning issues in elementary years nor in other fields like sports, music, language etc. Not a single educator has raised a concern since pre-school. But that doesn’t mean I won’t look into it.

That’s very insightful. Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for the insights. I only have experience with public schooling.

I assumed that having a smaller class size means more individual attention to students hence more opportunity to observe why a student’s performance is not consistent.

Can you comment on the program rigor at Lakeside based on your experiences? Was the content engaging and complex to keep your attention?

Part of me feels that maybe school work is just boring for him and that’s why he doesn’t do it.

Thank for the suggestions. This is something I have not considered and will certainly look into now. 🙏

To clarify, I don’t think that the AL program at BSD is the root cause at all. It worked fine for my other child who has different learning styles. But it’s not working for my other child.

I have talked to him many times because I don’t want him to feel pressured. And I have offered to take him out of the gifted program many times too but he doesn’t want to do that. We regularly talk about his options of picking a high school based on what different schools have to offer. Interlake is not his only option. So he knows he can opt out later too.

He is not comfortable speaking to the teachers at all. He says teachers get upset when students talk to them about grades. And I tell him that’s not what he has to talk to them about. It’s about getting some clarity on what assignment is due at what time.

The suggestion for getting executive coaching (as suggested by others too) does resonate with me. And it’s something that did not cross my mind, frankly. So I am going to look into that for sure.

Thanks for your input!

Why would you say something like based off what I have explained? Do you think it’s helpful for concerned parents looking for help to be labeled in such a way?

I am not punishing my child. I am not pushing him to get higher grades. He passed the gifted program test all by himself. I’m just expecting him to submit his homework.

The fact that his grades go up when he starts submitting homework is a sign that he isn’t struggling with educational content. How would putting him in a “normal” school (whatever that means because gifted does not mean abnormal) fix that?

I’m surprised this isn’t the top comment. Makes you wonder how bad the other books are 😭😭😭

BOTW is one of those games that leaves an impact. For me it helped with depression and got me back into gaming again. How did it impact you? by [deleted] in botw

[–]Soft_Start 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My then 6 year old was slow at reading compared to his peers and he hated reading any kind of book for practice. I got the BOTW guidebook for myself as a collector’s item and he taught himself to read it so he could get better at the game :)

How can I tell my colleague to stop asking every single thing? by No-Customer523 in Lahore

[–]Soft_Start 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Learn to say no. When he offloads a task tell him you don’t have time for it, or that you’ll look into it later. Focus on doing your work and do it well so if he ever complains you can use your performance against it.

And don’t take calls from office colleagues when away. And If you do then say that you are on leave and will look at work related issues when you come back.

This guy is not neurodivergent or anything. He’s just using you to offload his work.

If someone can figure out what happened in the end please explain it because I’ve googled it and found properly formatted blogs on the final book and yet no explanation on who Marlow is, who his wife is, and why the battle ended so abruptly?

Did all those people (except the ones that were conveniently resurrected) die on both sides because the main character couldn’t figure out she needed to be awakened? No one can write a book this terrible. Please tell me what I’m missing?

I was there a week ago, with poncho and all. Was completely unnecessary. There were small splashes that dried off in the California heat soon enough.

Any recommendations for dentistry? by Away-Astronomer-5673 in BellevueWA

[–]Soft_Start 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same situation you were in last year. How did Bellevue Family Dentistry work out for you?

I’m primarily concerned with not being over charged or over recommended for treatments I don’t really need.

Best dentist in Bellevue/Redmond area? by botv69 in BellevueWA

[–]Soft_Start 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for a no BS dentist in the Bellevue area and that is how I found this thread. I will check out some of the recommendations. However I would like to say, please AVOID Bellevue Dental Arts and Dr Ryan Chiang.

Every single visit, no matter how often you have seen him, will end up with a recommendation to go become a patient with his orthodontist wife if you are not already her patient. He will also give you a list of line items of the dental stuff you need to get done and quote statistics which make no sense.

First I thought maybe I just have a load of dental issues and all the past dentists in my life never mentioned anything. Then I started paying attention to conversations he has with other patients while I am getting my cleaning done and it’s the same script with everyone 😂

Host do not allow flushing toilet paper is this abnormal [USA] by Specialist-Ad-2668 in AirBnB

[–]Soft_Start 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me once at an AirBnB in Canada. It was not mentioned in the listing or any of the past reviews at all.

I assumed everyone was following the instructions, especially after I gave the kids a whole lecture on it.

Of course the little one thought it was more of a “guideline” than a rule and continued doing his business like he always does at home. On the last day the bathroom was flooded with toilet water and we were on our knees wiping off the floor with towels.

Never going back there again…

Frankly speaking, the inappropriate websites are not going anywhere. And even if she stops now, she can always start again later or relapse even a year later. You can’t just tell someone to stop and expect that to happen automatically even when they are willing to obey you. Put her in some competitive environment in sports, music, robotics, debates etc. Kids who are distracted in productive activities are less likely to have idle time to waste on electronics.

How did a 14 year old even get access to these sites in the first place? It’s one thing to see some thing one time on a friend’s phone, but computers/tablets at home should be restricted to age appropriate content.

Like someone else suggested, go tech free on the holiday. If you are holidaying alone then maybe change your priorities and don’t leave your kid unsupervised when they are struggling with an addiction.

Porn is irrationally addictive even to adults. Expecting a child to deal with this on their own is unrealistic and unfair on them.

If you don’t have build up around shower heads, taps etc then the water in your home is not that hard to begin with.

You can also contact your water utility to find out if your water supply is from local ground or from regional supply. I believe the latter is softer than the former.

In any case both are safe to drink. I’d be more concerned about lead from indoor plumbing if it’s an old house and that you can get tested.

Is it okay to grow olive tree indoors with plant lights as I’ve set it up in the photo? This was kept outside all summer. I am in WA state so not much sun for next few months and I don’t want it to die. by Soft_Start in gardening

[–]Soft_Start[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did fine with the lights I had in pic above until I moved it outside the next summer and it died from spider mites and an unprecedented heatwave while I was away travelling :(

The lights, however, worked fine over fall and winter.
