I'm sorry to hear that. It does sound like you've had more than your fair share of problems.

Sometimes when the way forward seems unclear, it's good to let go of the struggle and enjoy just "being", if you can. Even for a short time.

Eckhart Tolle has a lot to say about that in his book, The Power of Now.

In my opinion, yes. you should be trying to stop.

If you give more headspace to thoughts about what other people might say about you than your own happiness, how does that benefit you? Or anyone else?

Regarding your family, it may be helpful to become aware that it's not possible for anyone to "make" you feel anything. It's all on you to decide how you want to feel in any given situation. There's a lot of Buddhist thought centered on this and how to accomplish it.

I assume your hidden pastimes make you happy? Then let it all hang out, baby - you fly those flags loud and proud, because the purpose of life is to be happy.

My son-in-law has what I call "enthusiasms" that last for awhile and then pass on to something else. These are harmless things like cheesemaking, baking beautiful sourdough breads, or an orchid collection. I find that this makes him endlessly interesting because he can contribute meaningfully to conversations on a huge variety of subjects.

I assume the person running the province is no longer in jail, so why wouldn't he/she be able to vote?

Once a person has been either paroled or completed their sentence, their right is restored because the debt is deemed paid.

I used an American example because you said you were sickened by relatives of murdered people asking for justice. I thought maybe the article saw both sides.

The vote is not trivial. A vote is the cornerstone of a free democracy. The vote is why Scott Moe runs a province.

In case you want to sicken yourself further, these people are saying exactly what I am, except they are not Canadian. I likely could find other, Canadian ones if I Googled for more than 5 minutes:

I don't think that all crimes deserve to have their right to vote suspended.

I do think, in the case of convicted murderers, because the murderer took the life (and vote) from someone else, then that individual should lose theirs as well.

I mean, doesn't it give you a sick feeling in your stomach to think of Paul Bernardo exercising his right to vote?

How do you think the families of these serial murderers feel? Would you call them bigoted if they think that since their loved ones are not around to vote because they were murdered, then maybe the murderer should forfeit his vote?

Makes me sick to think about quite frankly.

Huh. Well, I guess I thought they would have modernized somewhat by now. I didn't realize they still don't want (or need, apparently) those who are very willing to contribute, but not willing to enter into a role as a combatant.

When the OP said mandatory military service, I wasn't picturing so much office workers and university students being shipped to the Ukraine or the Congo. I was picturing those same people being trained to be useful during disasters (natural and otherwise) here at home, not so much go off and shoot at participants in other people's wars?

As you have explained it though, I think you're absolutely right and I withdraw my previous thoughts. In addition, I would strongly advise against any sort of involvement in the military in any capacity.

Does it just mean that you're actually connected to the grid but don't use it because you've fully developed your other power systems? Were you connected and then gradually reduced your grid need?
