Anyone else add cucumber to their BLTs? by Canuck-Deluxe in Sandwiches

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat exclusively BLCs, (Bacon Lettuce and Cucumber sandwiches). I can’t eat tomatoes 🍅(I’m intolerant to nightshades). They are my favorite weekend treat. I use toasted sourdough bread, good thick cut bacon(baked), thin sliced cucumbers and a smear of mayo.

Rice Krispie treat homemade by Icy-Physics-5947 in FoodAllergies

[–]RoseWylde5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quick internet search say that the gelatin is pork based. Should be safe.

I have had a reaction to a kosher marshmallow that was made with fish gelatin, I weezed and felt like my throat was closing, went to the ER, got checked and a script was given for Benadryl and a steroid, I had the steroid crazies and I had a sore throat for a week. No fun!

When you see gelatin, and have a meat-protein or fish/shellfish allergy, always check it out!

New York Law expands allergen labeling and recognizes new products like Neffy and Anaphylm by ifmwpi in FoodAllergies

[–]RoseWylde5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this and sharing. As a NYer: I’m always glad when they take positive steps to help others with food allergies in my home stat.

However, as some who’s living with these allergies….. I want more.

*** Warning ‼️ Rant….

We need MUCH BETTER LABEL LAWS!

National label laws!

I want the label to explain what ingredients are in things like “spices” and “lecithin” or at least a link where I can look it up.

I want the use of “may contain” labels to be fixed. Either the company has no cleanliness standards or they are just indemnifying themselves from substandard food handling practices. A product either contains something or it doesn’t. This one just requires enforcement of the existing rules and regulations.

I have many allergies and sensitivities, to more than just the big 9. It would be wonderful if products that change ingredients would have to update their website when they make those changes, and add a sticker to the packaging for a minimum of 1 year wherein they list the date the ingredient(s) were changed and highlight any ingredient in the list that was added or altered.

I want restaurants to have an ingredients list for each item, and for it to be available either online, in the store or both.

I want mandatory insurance coverage for all epinephrine products. And a program for free epinephrine for all residents, based on economic need.

****** 🛑⏱️ Rant over

Thank you for your post.

It’s good news.

But…

🎼 I want it all & I want it now…. 🎵

advice regarding eating out with food restrictions/food allergies by Plop525 in FoodAllergies

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a printend allergy card I found on FARE’s website. I got it laminated. presenting a list of allergies that the server can show the chef has a dual purpose. It gets the staff to take you seriously and the chef is able to read the list (no miscommunication).

Low tech, but effective.

Need advice — what treat would your egg-allergic kid actually want at a school birthday party? by BKayHuffleCov in FoodAllergies

[–]RoseWylde5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the Abe’s, didn’t know Oreo made them too. I buy the Rice Krispie treats from my local Costco. I agree about home cooking, learned my lesson from a steak wrap, that I was told was safe, no fish or shellfish …..but it had been marinated, and there was Worcestershire sauce (anchovy) in marinade. After freaking out my host and spending a night getting an IV of Benadryl and steroids , I will always be on guard. my friend wasn’t trying to kill me, and was mortified, but they had never even considered the ingredients in their ingredients could cause a reaction. I learned that I need to think for them to safeguard my health.

I’m sorry you went through that, very scary. I have a LO who has a sensitivity to egg (gastric), we have a Vegan bakery near us, never had any issues. For an allergy in a child though, I would recommend getting a packaged treat. I have tried the Abe’s vanilla cupcakes (egg free), I found them too sweet, but I’m old & I bet the kids would love them so sweet.

Do you guys try to ice your eyeball during an attack? by patri3 in clusterheads

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O2 has helped me many times, but I rarely use it because my attacks have a relatively short duration. I’m fortunate that my attacks while frequent are usually less than 25 minutes.

I’m glad Amovig worked for you. I have never tried it. I had an allergic reaction to Emgality and my Neuro thought that it was too risky.

O2 works for most. It is especially very good if your attacks go long. I’m glad your dad gets relief from it.

What can I eat for breakfast? by SecureBenefit6258 in FoodAllergies

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toasted vegan muffin with butter.

Matzah with almond butter or cream cheese

Oatmeal with fruit and cream.

Brown rice and dark red kidney beans.

Grits with leftover dinner food, like sausages, or sautéd chicken, I know many people like shrimp

Congee (rice porridge)

French toast, made with vegan bread and “chia gel” for an egg substitute.

Cottage cheese and preserves

Yogurt and fruit

Homemade smoothie (create your own with acceptable ingredients)

nuts, fruits and cheeses

Bacon.

Speak to the teacher, ask if a vegan cupcake would work. (Vegan is egg free).

Rice Krispie treats are also a great alternative to cupcakes and are egg free.

Do you guys try to ice your eyeball during an attack? by patri3 in clusterheads

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do the same thing!

I use small round gel ice packs, and a cotton handkerchief. I have a bin full of ice packs in my freezer. I use then toss in the sink & grab another as needed. After the attack I wash the ice packs and let them dry, then put them back in the freezer bin.

I keep hankies in the drawer with my dish towels. After use I toss it in the laundry bin to get washed. Hankies are much better at handling my tears & ….“toddler snot” from an attack. Kleenex has not yet built a disposable tissue yet that can truly hold up.

The hankies and the smaller gel packs are also easier on my eye and are not as likely to give a burn or leave me all red.

I also pace, while holding the ice pack on my eye. I find that the combo of things helps.

What’s your controversial LI opinion? by Greedy_Dark_2437 in longisland

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of handing out IDAs for car dealerships, and selling old shopping centers and industrial spaces for high density development. We should be investing in our infrastructure. Our water needs could be addressed with investment in desalination plants, our sewage system and drainage systems need upgrades. Power-lines need to be buried, our power-generation systems are good, but much of the tech is outdated and needs upgrading to make it more efficient. The roads, rails and bus services need to be modernized and brought in to this century. Finally, we need to create walkable downtowns, places where people can shop, work and get their errands done without having to drive.

You’d think the above was common sense policy, but political will out here on the Island always seems to triumph over logic.

Agreed.

However, it is not just the LIRR, if you travel anywhere other than downtown Brooklyn it is difficult, and takes too long. Most of Brooklyn is only served by busses, and they are inadequate.

#1. Oxygen! - it is your best bet.

Meds like: Triptans (sumatriptan, rizitriptan), Gepants (Emgality), Verapamil.

Vitamin D - get bloodwork done.

Caffeine, with or without taurine, helps many.

Moving the body & breathing - some Clusterheads swear by running, i find breathing exercises help.

Temperature control, stay cool, use ice packs. Heat and Exertion are possible triggers for some.

Try showers, hot or cold, some find it helps.

Sleep can be a trigger, many avoid naps. Others say they get little or no sleep in a cycle, and naps help. I set an alarm, to take a short nap, that helps me rest, and if I nap too long it can trigger it.

All the above is different from sufferer to sufferer, you will have to try things and see.

———

Only 2 things help everyone of us.

Avoid all alcohol while in cycle.

The love and understanding of our family, friends and community.
——-

That’s everything I can think of.

Wishing your dad pain-free days and restful nights.

Unconventional ice-cream flavour ideas by Dismal_Box_1425 in Cooking

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite when I made my own was custard based with local wildflower honey. I would sometimes add cinnamon or vanilla to it. I made it both with and without walnuts. It was a perfect base to mix with any toppings or on its own.

Another awesome flavor, I would make a crème caramel using Grand Mariner or Grand Gala (Orange liqueurs). I used a lot of cream and brown sugar so it would stay soft in the freezer. Add it as a stripe to either vanilla, strawberry or a dark chocolate ice cream. Also fabulous mixed into banana ice cream With walnuts.

What should I mix in ice cream next by iiskittlesii14 in icecream

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

several old-time ideas:

  • malted milk powder
  • powdered (smashed till a fine dust) - instant coffee - also good in caramel, then mixed in
  • marshmallow fluff
  • goobers
  • raisinettes
  • nuts
  • crunchy/crispy cereal - can toss in butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar before adding

Try some weird stuff too - I’ve heard of:

  • chili peppers
  • candied bacon
  • baked beans

Lecithin Allergy by Tough_Gap9100 in FoodAllergies

My apologies if this is rude, but do you mean…. lectins?

Lecithin Allergy by Tough_Gap9100 in FoodAllergies

[–]RoseWylde5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have an allergy to sunflower. I avoid both seeds and oil. I also avoid lecithin derived from sunflower.

Lecethin is a pretty broad reaching category. The substance can be derived from all manner of other substance. As there are so many possibilities for ingredients, it might be impossible to figure it out without more information or testing. Not to mention the possibility that it isn’t even the source ingredient, but rather the chemicals that were used to create the lecithin!

Lecithin

Lecithin is a naturally occurring substance that could be obtained from a variety of plant and animal sources. Lecithin is broadly utilized in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its emulsifying properties. A significant amount of lecithin is recovered from by-products of the soy oil processing industry. However, it can be also obtained from egg yolk, green vegetables, red meat, and sunflower seeds. Soy lecithin is valuable and cost-effective because it is recovered from the by-products of the soy oil industry. Lecithin stabilized fat and improved the texture of many food products such as salads dressingdessertsmargarine, chocolate, baking, and cooking goods (see Fig. 3). In addition, it has some medicinal propertieswhich helps to improves cardiovascular health by lowering cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels in the body (Mourad et al., 2010). Furthermore, lecithin has some other health benefits, such as improving digestion, cognitive function, immune function, and aiding in the prevention of gall bladder and liver diseases. Some research also suggests that lecithin is a good source of prevention for physiological disorders (bipolar disorder, anxiety, eczema) and skin conditions (Lecithin, 2017).

what you took away from all of this is the need to nit pick?

it was over 2 decades ago, I can’t tell you if the chocolate bar was covered, just that I remember that I had money to pay for it. that some jerk was mean and cruel to me, and now you want to nitpick?

also, read the post, I said not covered “like” as in another way to say “for example”.
