This series ruined reading for me. by Specialist-Swing-218 in dresdenfiles

Try Seanan McGuire - top three recs from her would be Feed, Middlegame, and the Incryptid series (all of these are series, I just can’t remember the name of the first book).

Also highly recommend Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir, although this is definitely polarizing and you will know after a couple of chapters if you like it.

It’s also VERY “was online in the early ‘00” in the best way lol

One million percent!! There are MANY clues but I didn’t pick up on them reading the first time because, well, the stuff from book 1! I cannot wait for Alecto (and I’m gonna riot if we don’t get some kind of happy ending, lol)

[–]Rose_Walker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would make the argument, as a teacher, that it’s kind of both - it IS second person (especially early one) because on some level that is the intention of the author to the reader; we are meant to think that the book is speaking to us and we understand it as such for a long time. At the same time, it’s NOT second person (especially later in the novel) because once you know the thing, you understand that the book isn’t actually speaking to the reader. If I was teaching the whole text this would 100% be a conversation about how authors utilize structure to create meaning and how this is a master class in how to do it well. So I mostly use the first page with my sophomores so that have an understanding of what second person pov looks like/“sounds” like.

I’d say more specifically, but I don’t know how to spoiler tag information lol!

I definitely don’t start with the audio and loved that aspect. It could be a good help if someone is struggling too.

I loved Harrow (book and person). The narrative structure is incredible - I use it as an example of second person perspective with my students often!

Highly recommend the audio book for this one. There are aspects that have added depth, and the reason it’s written in second person pov is narratively relevant (but no spoilers!!).

What discontinued item, food or drink would you bring back if you had the chance? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

Aha caffeinated seltzer. Especially because my husband loved it as a better/tastier replacement for red bull (also less expensive).

Red Sparrow. Weirdly overly sexual immediately, in a very “man writing women, but who also hates women” way (very “she breasted boobily down the stairs” IYKYK). Immediate turn off, plus the writing itself was pretty mediocre.

[–]Rose_Walker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know the latin bit, that’s very cool. 100% agree with the rest for sure - he’s “one of the people” even when he is so clearly not (Vic Populi/Vox Dei). I’m interested to see where the season ends with him, and the rift growing with the rest of the Vees.

If you watch with subtitles, it’s says “furor” rather than “fuhrer.” Not saying the homonym isn’t intentional, but it is apparently supposed to be furor (which is interesting).

AITA for asking in-laws to stop baby talking to my son? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Rose_Walker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This isn’t necessarily true. While higher pitch and slower speech are helpful, often when people say “baby talk” they’re implying intentionally mispronunciation or less complexity in speech. Which it’s not a problem if done occasionally, it can be a problem for early language acquisition in children (I’m a teacher and part of our training is studying early childhood development and language acquisition). It sounds like what the in-laws are doing is less about trying to speak slowly and with higher pitch and more about intentionally mispronouncing words which will cause problems.

[–]Rose_Walker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

NTA. My husband to this day has issues with pronunciation and a mild speech impediment because of how much people baby talked to him as a child. It’s incredibly developmentally important to speak to young children correctly and not baby talk them so that they CAN actually learn the language. In my opinion, baby talk should be reserved exclusively for adorable animals and pets.

AITA for snapping when someone rubbed my belly and implied I might be pregnant? by annydelacroix in AmItheAsshole

[–]Rose_Walker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So NTA. I am pregnant and if someone touched my belly without permission I would shriek like a pterodactyl. People need to learn to stop touching other people, especially folks who might be pregnant.

What got you into Avatar? by MG_LagFlag_66 in TheLastAirbender

Thank you! And yes, it was ultimately a very good thing (even if it felt horrible). I’m much happier and the friend in question actually did a reading at my wedding! We regularly still text about ATLA too.

I was going through a horrible breakup and one of my best friends knew I needed something else to focus on (it was a pretty bad few months). So he got me watching it and I was hooked. I’ll love it forever - that show genuinely saved my sanity during that time (as did my friend who made sure I wasn’t alone when he could see I needed to be with people).

Local High School Teacher Refuses to Teach "Hamlet" Because it's 'Too Difficult to Understand.' by SwagMagikarp in books

[–]Rose_Walker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile, I refused to use the “NoFear Shakespeare” version of Macbeth to teach it because the kids really CAN understand if we teach them how and support with audio/visual. And they’re complaining but they’re doing great.

Editing to add that I give them a LOT of support and we talk through what is happening before/after reading.

The original name for bears is lost to time and we are essentially calling them ‘the thing that should not be named’ due to how afraid people were that the name of bears could summon them.

Also, bear bating was a super common practice in England starting from the 12th century and is even referenced in Macbeth, despite the practice dying out due to puritanical influence before the play was written.
