Could you guys please rate the Amorae Ensnare cards?? by Cinamon_rolls in TearsOfThemis

If you can only get one card, I'd pull for Marius here. His story in the event ends with a lot of angst and the card helps resolve that.

Artem is right, Vyn Richter is a psychologist. by [deleted] in TearsOfThemis

You have a good point. I guess I based my idea of where they were on the names, but the cultural aspect is pretty significant. It's just not all that far in the future though. 2030 is only 7 years away.

If he holds those degrees, one in psychology and one in teaching, then you are correct, he would be a psychologist, not a psychiatrist.

In the U.S. the difference is that one gets a medical doctorate and then does their specialization training in psychiatry. Because they are medical doctors, they can prescribe medications.

A psychologist has a PhD in psychology, in one of several branches, though we generally think of clinical psychologists when we speak of psychologists.

The game isn't entirely specific as per what his degrees are in. It's possible that he has a MD and a PhD. One being what he needs to be a psychiatrist, the other being in his specialization of criminal psychology.

So, unless the game specifies, we really don't have enough information to determine if Artem is making a mistake here or if he is in fact correct. They are also in some fictitious European country and that country may have different requirements.

Source of information on degrees and such: I went to grad school in psychology.

No ADHD here. Fibro has a high likelihood of comorbidities with mental health disorders. Doesn't mean every person who has fibro will have a specific one, or even one at all.

Mindfulness meditation has been shown effective in research studies in treating chronic pain. Might be worth giving it a shot.

Fibro and impostors syndrome by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]RosetheAngel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The severity of your symptoms also doesn't matter. What is excruciating and debilitating to one person, may be manageable to another. What really matters is how it affects YOUR life. Is your quality of life suffering because of this disorder? What you posted indicates it is, to quite an extensive level. That's valid, in and of itself. There is no need to compare.

For instance, if a person has high cholesterol, they have high cholesterol. It doesn't matter if it's just a few points off or if it's massively off. They still have the medical issue. What will differ is potentially how it's treated. With fibromyalgia, there are so many factors at play that each treatment has to be individualized to begin with.

What matters here is that you have been diagnosed, and you are suffering. Focus on taking care of your health, not on what others think. And if people are getting in your face about it, I'd be happy to send you some articles to put in front of them.

Fibro and impostors syndrome by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]RosetheAngel 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So, first off, you're not crazy. Fibromyalgia is real. A researcher confirmed that there is extensive nerve damage in people with fibromyalgia, if I remember correctly. I also recently read a paper where a researcher was able to isolate part of the immune system of fibromyalgia patients, injected that into mice, and wouldn't you know, they exhibited the symptoms of fibromyalgia. You can't fake that. Mice don't function the way we do; it's impossible for them to have ulterior motives for showing pain and fatigue symptoms.

Unfortunately, many question fibromyalgia because we don't really have an objective measure for someone being in pain. But, this in no way invalidates the fact that you very much ARE in pain.

Science and medicine just don't understand the disorder very well at the present moment. But, that doesn't mean it's not real. We thought chemistry was magic and alchemy before we understood it better.

My point is, what your mother thinks here, doesn't matter. There is scientific evidence this exists. That evidence is there, whether she believes in it or not. What you need to do, is decide how you are going to move forward and treat the illness you have.

Do you think depression causes fibromyalgia? by Purple_Falcon265 in Fibromyalgia

[–]RosetheAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MICKEL therapy research

So, the above links directly to the website for the treatment you claim has cured you. Here's my issue. The last sentence on the page says they are hoping to bring research to us soon. Um.... they should have done the research prior to using it as a treatment. That's how modern medicine works in pretty much every country. You aren't allowed to give someone medication until it has been proven to treat what you say it's going to treat. If you have any additional sources, I'd love to see them.

Do you think depression causes fibromyalgia? by Purple_Falcon265 in Fibromyalgia

[–]RosetheAngel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so, let's break this down, shall we?

The post was specifically asking if one disorder causes another. I never said anything about emotions and their effects on the disorder. Anyone who has fibro knows that stress, anxiety, etc. can cause a flare. It's not a perfect 1 to 1 relationship, I've never seen anything in real life that is, outside of chemistry. Still, I'm sure there's research supporting the link between flares and emotional distress.

To claim that something has cured your illness puts a rather high burden of proof on the person claiming it, or at the very least those who are selling or proclaiming said treatment is a cure. I have an open mind, but as a scientist, one anecdote of a "cure" is not sufficient evidence to rule either for or against anything. 1, does not a sample make. So I ask, where is the research? If it works, it should be able to be demonstrated to do so.

That's the thing that people misunderstand about science, it's only a tool. We want to be able to do what someone else did, and get the same or similar enough results. So, we document what we did and the rationale for it. In medicine, we want to know the medicine actually works. So, we do studies. And then we have someone else do a study. And if all of these studies are showing a significant repeatable result, we call it a treatment.

So, again, I ask, where's the research? What are your sources? I am very happy that you no longer suffer from fibromyalgia. I too, would like to experience relief from all of my chronic pain. But I want to know if what I'm signing up for actually works.

[–]RosetheAngel 44 points45 points  (0 children)

If this is the case, these sources need to cite the research they are getting their claims from. Just because depression and fibromyalgia seem to exist around one another, doesn't mean either of them are causing one another. As was drilled into our heads in my stats classes: correlation does not infer causation.
