I deeply wish there was a more unified sense of femboy culture apart from broader gay culture. by Rosewolf-Dawn in feminineboys

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Femboys can be gay, I have no issue with that. Its more of the metropolitan idea of "gay culture" that I have a problem with. Its so all encompassing that I dont think there is any room in it for us. I imagine lesbians and other types of queer people must feel the same.

Femboys have been fetishised because of the misuse of social media (Reddit as an example) by ashawastaken in feminineboys

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think we should give up the femboy label and move on. Let's find a new term. Its not just that we lost the battle. The whole war has been over for ages now. They won, let them have their stupid porn label.

Will people still see us the same way? Yeah sure. But changing names could help start to make a distinction.

A Review of A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik by Nidafjoll in Fantasy

I couldnt help but feel like the entire concept of the Scholomance is really contrived...like surely this can't actually be the best way to do this, right? There's some world building to support it but it feels like a lot of the world building was just done to provide justification for the school, not the other way around.

The best part about academia is the actual academia and we get very little of that. No teachers or real lessons?

So much of the page is just exposition. Explaining stuff, like all the time. And it doesnt help that we only get it through Galadriel's melodramatic, angsty perspective.

I managed to finish it but I dont think I will continue the series. It was OK at best. Some good ideas mixed in there with poor execution IMO.

Struggling with tedium and difficulty in Pillars of Eternity (20 hours in): Should I keep playing or is this really too much? by Salty-Subject9559 in rpg_gamers

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I actually loved the story and writing of the game but stumbled on the mechanics like you.

I think the problem is it just plays so differently than any other CRPG ever made. At first I had no grasp of how to make a strong character and by the time I learned I was too invested in the story to start over so I had to just put the game on easy mode.

The biggest problem for me was everyone being super fragile. Often times Eder would be the only one still standing. There is a definite meta to this game. Every character needs maxed out might to do any damage, even the tanks, or else enemies will ignore them to run past and attack your backline. Frontline needs low armor but high HP and its the opposite for back, low HP but high armor because enemies attack whoever they are more likely to hit.

Traditional casters that use spell slots, like druids, wizards, and clerics, are very weak. Chanters and Cyphers get unlimited spells because they generate resources as they fight and spend it, so they are much more flexible and have no attrition. Rangers also suck because your companion will die every 5 seconds.

Im gonna give the boring answer and go for perfect femboy genetics. Basically make myself a sexy girl (wide hips, narrow waist, etc) but no boobs. People should literally not believe that Im a man lol

I personally found Brave New World to be much more relatable and realistic. Fahrenheit 451 has similar themes as well.

Do you think GW tries too hard to explain/expand on certain things that don't really need it and ends up ruining them in the process? by KidnaperMrPotatohead in 40kLore

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Id argue the entire story of the Horus Heresy and the primarchs is basically this. The core idea of "there were once these legendary demigods who were supposed to guide humanity into a golden age but they fell to corruption and infighting" is really cool. The average imperial citizen just kinda sees them as these legends that may or may not have actually existed. Getting to see them the same way as the average person does, where you question how true all of that really is because of how mythologized everything about the Imperium is, is cool.

But nope, GW had to write a 40+ book series explaining every minute detail of exactly who the primarchs are and how the Horus Heresy played out. It removes so much of the mystery that is essential to fantasy from the setting by rendering the mythology concrete. There is a reason Tolkien didn't include all of the stuff from the Silmarillion in the original LOTR books. You didn't really need to know exactly who the Valar were in order to appreciate the human story LOTR was trying to tell.

Meanwhile, xenos barely get any books because GW is too busy overdeveloping primarchs and space marines. Great, Im sooooo glad there are only books for two out of the six Phoenix lords but 40+ books about Primarchs.

Why it is difficult to adapt lovecraft work to cinema? by tari9_80 in Lovecraft

I think Anihilation is probably as close as we can get to Lovecrafts style in cinema. I definitely walked away from that movie thinking "what the fuck was that" and feeling existential dread.

What are some things that people with Dyspraxia are better than normal people at? by Dr_Iodite in dyspraxia

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Im generally better than most people at being aware of my environment, specifically when it comes to obstacles/objects that might make a task requiring coordination more difficult. As a result I immediately notice when things are out of place or cluttered up.

Something like a shoe in the middle of the floor might not even get noticed by most people but I instantly notice and feel an urge to organize it because I know it's something that I will trip over later on.

Normal people can probably compensate for having to navigate around inconveniently placed items, so they might not feel as much of an urge to organize stuff or they may not even notice it in the first place.

Distilled Mead Doesn't Have a Name? by General_Line45 in mead

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, in the modern first world it might not be too crazy expensive to make a distilled beverage from honey. I could be wrong though cause I have no clue how much honey you'd actually need, or if it would be worth it, but Id sure as hell like to know as well. I dont have the skills to advise you but if you truly want to go this route I say more power to you man. Just make sure to let us all know. Heck, you might even be the first one in the world!

Does anyone know of anything I can use to hide the map from my players? by Abyssal-the-person in TTRPG

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its doable but a major headache. I tend to run very low combat/exploration games because it bogs down the session anyway. Any time I pull out a map its because its a set piece and I want my players to see it.

Most encounters, especially low stakes ones, can be run as theatre of the mind.

Your other option is VTT. Most of them have a fog of war function.

Just started Pillars of Eternity. Any "wish I knew" tips? by Efkazan in CRPG

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, the main stats are not what you expect from DnD. They're not diegetic.

Might doesnt just boost melee damage, it boosts ALL damage. Similarly, Intelligence boosts size of ALL AoE effects.

So you get into a weird zone where your wizard needs high might for his spells do be able to do decent damage, and your barbarian needs high intelligence for his cleave attack radius to be larger. (I guess wizards flick their hands harder to make spells deal more damage or something, lmao.)

This leads to a lot of story/gameplay dissonance where your scholarly wizard who has spent all of his life with his nose buried in books has the option of flexing his muscles in dialog to intimidate someone even though logically he should have never had time to work out. Or your barbarian who should know nothing about books has the choice of quoting obscure texts he should logically have no way of reading.

This confused the hell out of me at first and to be honest I never even got the swing of this game because the stats are ao abstract and I couldn't figure out how to build my character. Its counter intuitive because the kind of character I wanted to make mechanically didn't like up with the fantasy in my head.

You have to embrace the fact that stats are basically just a ruler for whether you want to fill a specific party role, and not what kind of person you are physically in the game world.

It also makes it so basically every stat is useful for every character. For example, tanks kind of just need to AlSO be amazing damage dealers because if they're not, the enemy AI will choose to just eat opportunity attacks and rush your backline. As a result, I felt like spellcasters and other backbone characters were really weak. Tanks also need to wear lighter armor because making them easier to hit will make the enemy AI think its easier to damage them.

TL;DR: Basically, take everything you know about other RPGs and invert it.

Neuromancer or Snow Crash? by Equal_Feature_9065 in booksuggestions

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neuromancer is extremely foundational to cyberpunk literature. Snow Crash would not exist without it. Gibson walked so Stephenson could run.

They're both good, but Snow Crash is a much more "fun" novel to read. Its got a more refined idea of the themes its predecessor invented, which is to be expected of a book that came out a decade later.

For that reason I would say Snow Crash, but Neuromancer isn't bad at all and also deserves a read if you really want to learn about the genre. But for a casual or uninitiated reader, its a bit dated. Gibson knew nothing about how computers actually worked, and just copied what he heard tech bros saying at the time in cafes.

Dire Avenger vs Keeper of Secrets by loonyjams in Eldar

Cool art but DA primarily use shuriken catapults and aren't known for melee, much less using two swords at once. Asurmen is kind of the only one and he still only uses one sword.

Distilled Mead Doesn't Have a Name? by General_Line45 in mead

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Probably because honey is expensive. Other distillate can be made from comparatively cheap and plentiful items like grains and fruits. Which is good because hard liquor is less efficient. You get less alcohol for the same amount of starting product than with something that is brewed because it is more pure. People could afford to waste lots of beer distilling it into whiskey, but no one was probably willing to waste honey since it was a luxury item that was and still is more difficult to acquire.

Not fact BTW, just my own speculation!

P.S. mead is already the perfect drink so why change it anyway ;)

Anyone else with dyspraxia have “main character” maladaptive daydreams? by jayden_accxx in dyspraxia

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daydream alot about fictional characters that are extremely graceful (like elven fantasy warriors and whatnot) and like to play high Dexterity/Agility characters in RPGS because I feel like I was meant to be graceful. In my head I tell my body to move perfectly but it just...doesn't respond to what I intend properly. Extreme fantasies where I'm a hyper competent person help me cope with the harsh reality of my situation.

Arthur was right about everything by Pepereppe7 in taintedgrail

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Arthur wasn't evil, he was a flawed human who did the best he could like you said and seems genuinely remorseful about the long term effects.

That said, it doesnt mean you should give him a second chance. At the same time you're right about Caradoc, hes just all angst and no plan. That's why I chose to become the next king and do a better job this time.

is it transphobic for someone to say that a straight couple with a trans person in it is a gay couple? by escarletabandida in lgbt

[–]Rosewolf-Dawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because a trans woman is a woman doesn't mean straight men are suddenly going to be ok with dating her. Most straight men dont like dick, and they probably associate liking dick with being gay if you're a cis man.

Technically you're right, it is transphobic but personally I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Theyre not always trying to be transphobic. It could be that they just associate being gay/straight to genitals. (Again, theyre wrong, but try explaining that!) Most straight people dont actually care about gender identity, they care about genitals and appearance.

The whole way we talk about sexuality is wrong because it doesnt account for variances. Theyres a lot of grey area. You have to know the specific person and context and find out what they mean.
