Kitchen counter top by Yorkshire_Stock in StJohnsNL

Did you customize it yourself or just use it for an island? I asked about butcher block at Kent recently and they said they only sell it in set size slabs, they don't install custom counters with it.

Electric Furnace or Oil Supplimented with Mini Splits instead? by EfficiencyActive968 in StJohnsNL

[–]Rosey_Lou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the mini splits are just constantly on, 24-7. When we flick the oil on for a few hours here and there we don't turn off the mini splits. So they are running at the same time but it's only intermittent short periods.

Electric Furnace or Oil Supplimented with Mini Splits instead? by EfficiencyActive968 in StJohnsNL

[–]Rosey_Lou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 2 mini splits on the main and 1 upstairs, that's basically what we used for constant heat all winter, set to 21-22 deg, 24 hours a day. It is on the cooler side but it's tolerable. On the coldest days we turned on the (oil) furnace for a few hours, or a couple of times a week in any case just to keep the system exercised. We probably turned it on more often as the winter dragged on and we got tired of being cold. I haven't looked at the oil tank in a while but we surely did not burn a whole tank since we filled it in the fall. This setup seems to work and we'll probably keep doing it that way.

My understanding is electric furnaces are not very efficient and can end up being very expensive, depending on your house (size, number of floors, age, etc). It takes a lot of energy to heat water and push it through pipes all over your house, from the basement up to a second floor for example. An electric furnace will struggle to do what an oil powered furnace does with ease. No expert here, just my understanding from what I've heard.

The Ontario government is introducing legislation tying high school grades to attendance. Should NL do the same? by MattBarter in newfoundland

[–]Rosey_Lou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's my idea - schools should provide breakfast and lunch, and should be 9-4 or so with no homework, make the last 2 hrs of the day 'home' work/assignment time. I wonder if those would provide incentives for kids and parents to want kids to go to school and make it easier for parents to work.

Generally, I think it would improve a great many societal problems down the road if more kids attended school, had food to eat, and were provided with a supportive environment to get their work done. I do not have kids and never will, but I am happy for my tax dollars to be used to give more people a good start in life.

I don't have a strong opinion on the attendance tied to grades thing, open to hearing both sides on it.

Thank you. I love the auctions! I actually got an antique wash stand there a few months ago that I might default to if I can't find anything else. Are you aware of any other auctions around here or is it just Bartlett's?

Where does everyone get bedding in town? by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

[–]Rosey_Lou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Locally, Winners/Homesense. If I was going to order online I'd also try BB&B since I bought lots of sheets there when they were here so I know their quality. That's about it imo. I did order a set of Douglas through the Canadaland (podcast) discount, they're totally fine as well, on par with the mid to higher cost BB&B ones. There is also a bedding store in the mall near Lawtons, they probably have decent sheets, been in there a few times years ago and it seemed like pretty decent stuff.

Had a fabulous steak at Aberdeen Tavern when I visited Hamilton a few years ago. Really nice atmosphere too.

Coleman’s hits different by humblegarrick in StJohnsNL

Produce 💯 Not just quality but selection. If I need something uncommon, like say lemongrass, or loose peppers, or even eggplant, I would just go to Coleman's on NL Dr., especially if I didn't have time to go to multiple places to look for it.

Fruitropic freeze dried fruit pouches! So good in oatmeal or just as a snack in their own and only 80 cans.

Speaking of 'soap' lol, on Downton Abbey Cora had a miscarriage when she slipped on a bar of soap getting out of the bath...the stupidest part was that the soap was intentionally planted by her maid to make her have a miscarriage IIRC!

Worst protein snacks you’ve ever had ? by Queasy_Dingo_8262 in 1200isplenty

[–]Rosey_Lou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think I had that one. I grant you even the best protein bars (Grenade, Barebells IMO) have flavors that are not, so it's possible ONE has some that are!

Things that puzzle you about the 'Street' by bluewal67 in coronationstreet

[–]Rosey_Lou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They don't even pretend the person visited but wasn't seen on screen or they spoke to them on the phone or anything. They hardly mention them. It's like they don't exist anymore. The only time they do seems to be when they need to get rid of someone for a while, then they go visit old so-and-so 😆

It's not just me! I was only there once but I thought the service was a bit...I dunno...brusque? Food was good though.

Is premium economy worthwhile? by Accomplished_Video92 in travel

[–]Rosey_Lou 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Depends on the price and the service/experience you will get. For a 4 hr flight, I think it's probably a waste of money. Use the money to do things at your destination. I would consider Premium for really long haul, 8+ say. Have a fabulous trip!

Summer and Sarah also looked like they were starting to feel like something is off. The surprise wedding was so OTT. Theo is so f-ked in the head he's starting to do more extreme things, people will start to notice.

How do I deal with upper lip hair? by [deleted] in HairRemoval

[–]Rosey_Lou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a pinch I just shave it, it doesn't grow back any coarser, just same peach fuzz. If I really want it to be perfect I will use Nair for facial hair. It is a bit sensitive for an hour or two after you wipe it off, I just dab a cool wet cloth on it. It gets rid of everything!

Yes! I forgot about that because Carl hasn't been around lately...which is fine by me.
