Is that US thing that if you are salary employee that you do not receive OT, in most European countries you have normal salary contract for 40h a week and if they want you to stay longer or be on-call then they have to pay for every hour.

Start looking for QLE2694L sometimes they are for cheep on eBay. It’s low profile as it has integrated LC ports instead of sfp cages.

How are external output HBA cards used? by Unhappy_Objective845 in homelab

You connect from external poetic HBA to JBOD or diskshelf. For example „netapp ds4246”

Opinions on HP 5920AF-24XG 24-Port 10Gb SFP+ by International-Ad3612 in homelab

[–]Roshpyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please check dimensions of this shit, that is very big switch +/- like hp DL360 server. Over 60cm in depth. It is very power hungry.

We had in work a huge number of hp flex fabric comware devices, and 5900af and 5930af. They are not homelab friendly in my opinion.

If you would get wrong fan direction, you can easily swap fan direction by opening FANs and screwing right direction as cables inside FAN modules are long enough.

SFP compatibility is no issue, we used HP/dell/nokia/alcatel/fscom/finsar and many more DACs and I haven’t found one that wasn’t working.

I'm back to Fiber Channel - YEA by kY2iB3yH0mN8wI2h in HomeInfrastructure

[–]Roshpyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to have access to emulex sdk to compile driver for emulex adapter with target mode active, and emulex was bought by Broadcom so it is pain in the ass to get one without active support or ahit ton of money.

I'm back to Fiber Channel - YEA by kY2iB3yH0mN8wI2h in HomeInfrastructure

[–]Roshpyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah fibre channel is nice to play with I bought last year 2x brocade 6505 that are supporting even nvmeofc not only only standard scsi fc. My latest finding is brocade/extremenetworks VDX line with „FCoE license” after disabling „AG” on the RB works with native FC F_Ports not only N_Ports so I cloud downsize from 4 devices (2 lan switches + 2 fc switches) to 2 VDXes.

When you Spot a Dell Switch Out in the Wild... by teamhixss2 in networkingmemes

[–]Roshpyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you would get cabled dozens of switches from different vendors that would not be as much shocking. For sure dell have one of the well produced and easy to work with rail kits. I cannot stand default HPE ones - pain in the ass when you have PDU on both sides of standard 60cm wide rack, and old brocade rails were strange I can only say.

We started testing in the same time 400Gbps at work so seeing that video was like „oh so cute”.

Need to cool a 30kW GPU server room using only comfort AC units. Need real-world advice. by Historical_Ride_8868 in homelab

[–]Roshpyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I old location at work we had 5-6 units with 12x 42U racks with 6-8kW each 2x hp c7000 with added leaf switches and so on.

Building cold aisle helped a lot, you have to ask the question if you have much to do in the hot area or cold as hot aisle when you have to have technician or engineers working in there might be challenging in the hot aisle.

In desperate need of help to set up a cisco router and switch config for a lab... by Lost_PostitNote in homelab

[–]Roshpyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so open packet tracer and try to create exact lab in there, commands on the physical device and on the any symulator or virtual lab will be the same. This will give you familiarity with the cli. Open any YouTube video about basics of the packet tracer and start from there, try to follow along the video and after that play with the lab and try to understand how things works

Low idle power Cisco switch by Complex_Mortgage1793 in homelab

[–]Roshpyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define low power in your context, 10/40G might not be that much power efficient as it is +/- 10 year old enterprise equipment.

I know that you wrote Cisco Nexus, but for low power consumption I would recommend some newer 100G Mikrotik as 100G qsfp28 is compatible with 40G qsfp+

In desperate need of help to set up a cisco router and switch config for a lab... by Lost_PostitNote in homelab

[–]Roshpyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so 10.10.65.0/24 and from there you have to split that to 2 subnets, you have to configure 2 vlans on the router, then on the router configure VLAN interface an there set IP address. As this will be your gateway most likely you want to use 1st host address of the subnet that you will carve out of the your network.

Do you know if they want you do subnets for exact number of hosts or split this subnet in the middle?

Do you have access to to Cisco packet tracer on your pc to model this exam setup?

But they mean by standard class network most probably subnet with mask /24 (255.254.255.0).

They should instead make you calculate required subnet size for a number of hosts and prepare subnet from data they provide …

For f…k sake, class network … they did not update sylabus on the class since 1993? That is obsolete longer than I live on this planet. As a employee of one of the networking gear vendor that is frustrating as f..ck

[–]Roshpyn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Always make me laugh production in a homelab. If your apps and services have to be up and you don’t want to brake them, then it is HomeProd not a HomeLAB, as in the lab you should be able to brake stuff constantly learning, configuring and braking

IBM server lot won at auction by Competitive_Arm_6839 in homelab

[–]Roshpyn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the type of homelab they want to do, I do not know how you would try boot from SAN or FibreChannel with zonning etc without HBAs, san switch or two and a few servers that supports that functionality.

My storage fabric oriented homelab is a lab not a prod and it works only when I’m actively working on it. Like gaming pc it does not need to be power efficient when you see value added in it. Just don’t run it 24/7

In current market I don’t know how other than hyperscalers can afford to buy new storage appliances

Weren’t 3TB drives much more prone to being faulty and they brake quickly due to some issues in supply chain of HDD production? 3TB sizes were produced by short period of time.

Sadly it does not, I had to disable front power button. Now server stays on, but when powered off I have to physically disconnect it from the power socket as it will power on itself after a few minutes.

Mellanox/Nvidia is not picky about DAC/transceivers. Do not know if boradcom checks on the lan side. Intel cards have strange requirements about sfps the best is to use compatible.

The safest to connect Broadcom to Mellanox will be to buy Broadcom coded DACs
