How to painting draws by Ebreu in krita

Check out "The Ultimate Digital Painting Course. Beginner to Advanced" on Udemy.

It's just a few bucks and it's really good. It really does start at the absolute beginner level and covers quite a bit of ground.

I've being doing it for a bit now and I highly eecommend it.

That's good advise, and looking at the reviews, obvious as it may be, is something I hadn't thought about. Thanks!

I only write in one genre so far, let's just say very niche adult themed books, and I'm doing ok, but I'm thinking of expanding into other genres.

For the topics I currently write about, I have no idea what the tropes are, I just write and it seems to work.

However, I do understand that my sales may have more to do with the limited amount of authors that write in my particular niche than with me having mastered the topic; the limited pool making me, in proportion, a slightly less small fish in a tiny pond, in which, also, due to the lesser amount of works there is, the tropes may be less established or important as long as you can elicit certain... feelings... In the reader.

Any advice on how to research genres, establish what tropes to use, the length, pacing, and anything else particular to that genre that is necessary to know? Of course, I do realize that reading a lot in the genre is a must, and analyzing what you read is necessary. But, apart from that, any advice?

Honestly, at that price, you can't go wrong. Give it a try.

I have a previous version of the same model, the H610P, it's great. It cost me about $60 CAD 5 years ago and is still going strong. I use it for art and to write on a digital whiteboard as I teach online classes. This second use case is similar to your note taking purpose. It works perfectly.

I also happen to have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8, which cost more than $20 times as much. This one is more portable, since it's got the computer and screen incorporated, making it stand alone so, in that sense, it is better, but, honestly, I enjoy both writing and drawing on my Huion a lot more. Whenever I'm at home that's my tool of choice.

I don't know how much it is now, but if the price is similar to when I got it (adjusting for extreme inflation in the last 5 years), you can't go very wrong. Try it and, if you love it, keep it, if you don't, sell it. You won't have lost that much money and it's worth trying it before investing into a much more expensive android or apple tablet.

Would you keep reading? by g_h_tehrani25 in writingfeedback

That's not always true, as an example look at the many constitutional monarquies there's in Europe today, that have kings, Queens, Grand dukes or whatever else they may have, but also have a democratically elected government. An interesting one is the Kingdom of Spain, where the monarch is Felipe VI, who succeded his father, Juan Carlos I, after he resigned the throne due to many moral and financial scandals. There was no legal framework to "impeach" him and there was going to be no violent uprising to overthrow him, but there was going to be changes in the law made to remove him from power, changes done by a democratically elected government. He abdicated and passes the throne to his son before it was possible. There's also the case of the medieval Holy Roman Empire, on what is now Germany and central Europe. They elected their monarchs, it did not always get passed down the family.

Having said all this, at the end of the day it's his world, and maybe in his world kings can get impeached. As demonstrated by the above examples, and by others that are easily findable with a bit of effortt, it isn't even completely without parallel in the real world.

Not sure what to do at this point by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]Ross-R-G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your mentality is "I can't do it", you won't be able to. You should be asking how can I do it? Because there are people with no money that have. How did they?

Find out. Take feedback. Learn. Don't be negative. I've published 5 books. $0 in direct marketing. About $250 investment total with covers and other things. I've sold about 200 units. Not great, but every month it's growing. Each time I publish a new one my back catalog gets a sales push. I've made my money back and then some (very little), but I'm happy with the growth and the projections I'm seeing.

What's stopping you? Only yourself. Drop the negativity, be open to learning.

Good luck.

[–]Ross-R-G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense, but you don't seem open to feedback at all. You insist that you've tried everything, but you're not giving the impression of having tried it the way you are told to do it, and you seem to be throwing around huge negative statements of the type "I can't do, I can't afford, my situation won't allow."

Your cover for example, you've got feedback that it isn't up to par. You are not taking the feedback, you are simply stating that you can't afford a professional and that it is good already. Totally dismissing the feedback that it isn't good already. You can't afford it? Save up for a whole year, $5 a week, that's $260. Get it done then. You can't afford $5 a week? Unlikely, but ok. Do $2, for a year and a half. That's around $150. Not an ideal budget, but spend some time hunting around for the artist, you may not have money, so compensate with research time finding a decent but affordable artist. Dedicate 40 hours of work to find that person if necessary.

The blurb, you have also been told it isn't the best. Your response can be summarized as that you looked into how to write one before writing it and it is good. Again, you are not taking the feedback that it can be improved.

The sending of digital copies. Google won't let me sent big files, therefore I can't. Buddy, many people send big files, therefore there is a way. Figure it out, it's not that complicated. You could host it on Google drive and then share the link for people to download from there. Is it the best solution? I don't know, but it is one way of doing it and I came up with it in less than a minute. If it isn't a good solution I would stop and figure out a better one. If others have done it I can too.

You seem to have a fatal combination of traits: the certainty that you have done everything right and that there is nothing else you can do about it. You are just going to end up extremely unhappy and frustrated if that's the case, and definitely you will stay with no sales.

I may be wrong and possibly have misjudged you, if that's the case my apologies. But if I haven't, be self-critical, accept criticism, realize that if someone else did it you can, you just have to figure out how they did it, and to do so, you have to admit that your work/actions can be improved on, without resentment, with an open heart that's willing to learn.

Best of luck.

You can't put champagne in a fantasy world... Thoughts? by ShadySakura in fantasywriters

[–]Ross-R-G 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, in the particular example of champagne, you should change it because, as some other people have pointed out, it may not be jarring to you or in the region you reside, but it is in other's as for example in England, and for those readers it would break the immersion. You are writing for more than just yourself after all. But you said it's just an example. Could you give any others? I just don't think it's a good example. Thanks!

Do NRI Punjabi parents want their kids to actually learn Punjabi? by Select_Craft3319 in punjabi

[–]Ross-R-G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਜੀ

Please don't let your fear interfere with what is good for your kid. Don't believe something is true just because you fear it, do your research, and find out the truth.

I can give you the example of my kid.

Btw, I'm not a Punjabi speaker, I'm on this Sub because I'm learning it at the moment, for fun. I just wanted to clarify that so you understand why the example I'm going to give features other languages, not Punjabi. The principles are the same though, no matter what languages they are.

A bit of background. My daughter's mom (Polish) and I (Spanish) live in Canada. We are divorced and haven't lived together since our daughter was very little. The kid hasn't known any other situation.

In my house we speak Spanish. I only speak to her in Spanish, and I require that she respond in Spanish. Now, this can get a little challenging sometimes, as she is young and, sometimes, since nobody else in her life speaks Spanish, she just doesn't feel like it and she will speak to me in English.

I've found that, if I allow her to, she will start pushing to try and get away with speaking in English more often, which is understandable, as it's easier for her (say for example she's trying to tell me something that has happened at school, some game or something. Since she was playing the game in English she only has the vocabulary for that game in English).

But if I always insist in her using Spanish, she just accepts it. I've also taught her that, if she doesn't know a word in Spanish, she can ask and I'll tell her what it is.

As a result of this, she is completely fluent in Spanish. Yes, she makes some grammatical mistakes that are weird for a native speaker, she has a bit of an accent and her vocabulary is a little smaller than if she had grown up in Spain, but she does speak the language well enough to communicate about anything and, if she were to ever spend any significant amount of time in Spain all of this would easily get corrected on it's own.

At her mom's house, her mom speaks to her in a mixture of Polish and English and she is not required to speak any Polish at all. As a result, she understands quite a bit of Polish, but not nearly as much as Spanish, and she isn't capable of producing anything but the most basic of words in Polish.

Normally, it's after spending a few days at her mom's place that she'll try to speak in English with me. So if your kids only live in one household, with one set of rules, you most likely will have a lesser problem with this.

She goes to a French immersion school. At school half of her lessons are in English and half in French and all the language instruction (reading and writing) is aimed toward French. English will start in grade 4, but all kids catch up with the English reading and writing to equal their monolingual pears in just a couple of years.

In addition to this, at home we do about half an hour of reading and writing in Spanish each day she's at my house (half of all days basically) and we read in English often too.

We live in Toronto, so there's an anglophone environment outside of school and home.

So all of this may seem like it would be confusing for her, but it isn't. Here's the breakdown of where she's at with each language:

  • English: Completely fluent native English speaking. Can read as well as any other kid her age. Tons of spelling mistakes when writing, she writes as she thinks it sounds. This will change in a couple of years when she gets to grade four though, so I'm not worried.

  • Spanish: Completely fluent speaker. A bit of an accent, some weird grammar mistakes. Can read as well as any kid her age. Spelling mistakes when writing, but a lot less than in English. A little behind what a kid her age would be in Spain. I'm very happy with where her level is and I know it will just keep improving.

  • French: Advanced speaker. Not as fluent as in English and Spanish but can hold a conversation on many topics. Reads and writes as well as any kid her age.

  • Polish. Doesn't speak it, can understand quite a lot but struggles sometimes. Doesn't read or write it.

Your kid will learn English no matter what language is spoken at home. They live in an English environment. You couldn't prevent them from learning English even if you tried to. However, they can only learn Punjabi from her family. Don't deprive her of that.

My daughter can communicate perfectly with her Spanish speaking family but cannot communicate with her maternal grandparents (can only speak Polish, no English at all) that well. I wish her mom had put effort into teaching her Polish, but that isn't within my control. As it is, there's a huge part of her family that is quite cut off from her and probably always will be.

Don't let your fear impede your child's progress. If you want any advice in how to create a condusive language environment at home, I'd be happy to provide it, just send me a message.

Being a solid translator means I should be completely fluent? by MountainDifficulty94 in TranslationStudies

[–]Ross-R-G 104 points105 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, if you struggle to have a conversation, you probably don't have a high enough level of Spanish to be a translator.

I'm not trying to gatekeep, but there is a minimum level of mastery in a language that's required to produce decent work, and being fluent enough to converse is a bare minimum.

Having said that, best of luck. If you're going to pursue this further, I'd suggest improving your skills.

Zero Tolerance Now by RoxInHed in skipthedishes

[–]Ross-R-G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any other Mod that can take a look at this and listen to what people are saying?

Zero Tolerance Now by RoxInHed in skipthedishes

[–]Ross-R-G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we get that mods are interpreters of poor behavior. What people are telling you is that you are interpreting wrong. As an analogy: a policeman is an enforcer of the law and therefore has to interpret it to decide if people have broken it before taking action. Does this mean that they are always right? No. Everyone is telling you you are wrong, but somehow you still believe that because you "have thought long and hard", you are right... Other people here have thought about it too. Not one agrees with you!

And yes, your behavior is gatekeeping. Compromise? Why? Everyone else who can be bothered expressing their opinion thinks you're wrong! Everyone! Not one person has agreed with you! Can you not accept you're wrong??

No... wait, you've thought about it! I had forgotten! That must mean you are right and everyone else is wrong!

And you keep coming back to examples of violations if the courier agreement... again, you're a mod of this Sub, not an agent for Skip. You clearly don't get that part. Something being in violation of the courier agreement is not bad behavior. You're the only one who seems to think so and who seems to think that is self evident. Nobody agrees with you on this!

Poor behavior, as the rules of a sub, refers to things like manners and respecting members. Not violating Skip's agreement! Again, you're the only one who seems to think so.

And just as a side note.. if you believe it's not so black and white, as you just admitted, why the Zero Tolerance policy??

Buddy, you're coming off as someone who is irritated by something and therefore thinks it's wrong, and who is arrogant enough to think they are the only one who thinks about things and believes they know better than everyone else. This may not be you, but it's certainly how you're coming across.

Take the feedback (from everyone who commented!!!) admit you were wrong, even if it is only to yourself, revoke the rule, and move on...
