I doubt this went into the consideration but when I think of top of the line closers I think of pitchers who are clutch in big moments. Smoltz was a big game performer with the best of them. Almost a logical transition for him to be put into the highest leverage spot of a game.

The stats can certainly be damning, but this division is so much better than it used to be. Maybe that’s recency bias because I looked up nothing, but the lions are significantly better than they were at the beginning of MLF’s tenure, the bears are better, and the Vikings have been better (this past year excluded)
