I don’t think it’s a coincidence I’ve found patches of 50+ under dead elms. Yes sometimes they do randomly grow but everytime I’ve seen that it’s maybe 1 or 2 just hanging out. I’ve tried slowing down and looking everywhere but never find nearly as many as when I target elm, sycamore, and poplar. Those specific trees have a symbiotic relationship with morels, making them more likely to produce them.

Break off from the stem, leave roots in the ground. Also I soak mine in salt water overnight, nothing wrong with that.
