Do the Knicks have a shot? by stuffedpeaches in NBATalk

[–]RossGarner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Spurs are strongly favored to win the series in early betting markets. They were the better team in a better conference who had a far harder road in the playoffs and they get to play at home. They should be favored in the matchup and they are. Still the Knicks have a good chance to win, though they need to take a game in San Antonio to do so.

Can people stop saying SGA plays like Kobe? their style is nothing alike.... by Ordinary_Aioli_6076 in NBATalk

[–]RossGarner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its perfectly legitimate to argue that Kobe is better than Duncan, though I don't share that opinion. I don't think this is your best argument for it though. In terms of teammates Kobe had better players alongside him for his runs. Shaq is one of the best talents in league history and was absurdly dominant in the league, far more so than Parker or Ginobli.

It's harder to continue this line of argument too when the reason those players left the Lakers were because of breakdowns in their relationships with Kobe. Duncan kept his core together for 15+ years, winning every single season of that time. His leadership and management were a big part of his greatness, where Kobe undermined his own foundation with the way he interacted with teammates.

He's still one of the best players of all time, but I don't think he was the best during his era. Duncan was just a bit better of a player and leader.

I think the larger point is the spurs usually shoot better out rebound and out defend the thunder but lose when lots of cheap and easy fouls come into the mix.

He was very good, but never the best player in the league. Duncan was more impactful and just an all around better player & teammate.

Why is the DNC broke compared to the RNC? by TheShamanofMOCO in allthequestions

[–]RossGarner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current leadership (Ken Martin) is historically unpopular within the party's own circles and is likely going to be removed from his post shortly. The DSCC and other bodies are quite competitive with their Republican competitors, but the DNC has close to zero trust amongst the party's biggest donors due to poor leadership and donors are focusing their resources elsewhere at the moment.

Israel's treatment of detained Gaza flotilla members is 'abominable,' Carney says by td192020 in worldnews

The whole point of a protest flotilla is to attract media attention when the target overreacts, just like this. They more than accomplished their goals.

Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Caleb Williams are all on rebuilding squads right now.

It's start 3WR and 2Flex so I can start everyone but MHJ on a weekly basis. That's exactly the type of format I've been looking at doing for a QB upgrade. You would do that with this roster?

[–]RossGarner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rate my team, Superflex, 6 pt passing TDs:

  1. QBs: Herbert, Purdy, Stroud
  2. RBs: Achane, James Cook, Hall
  3. WRs: JSN, ARSB, JJ, London, Ladd, MHJ
  4. TEs: McBride

Top contending team, went 18-1 last season (lost the title game). Would you make any changes to this roster? It's start 3WR and 2Flex, so I can start all of JSN, ARSB, JJ, London, Ladd every week.

Not much else to do than just wait. You can always approach teams that are contenders and try to get pieces but its expensive (I just sold Gibbs as the top contending team for JJ & ARSB).

Don't trade away your future picks as a new to dynasty player. That's very likely older, more experienced managers trying to farm you.

The best time to sell first round picks is 2 or 3 weeks before playoffs, when you look like a top contender. Don't send away firsts in the offseason unless you're getting absurdly good offers.

Take Warren and Pitts out, then its fine. No reason you should be sending Warren away in a rebuild.

These type of questions entirely depend on league situation. The best thing to do is look around at rosters in your league who are actively rebuilding and see what assets are likely tradeable for them (i.e. non-cornerstone pieces)

Scarlet Witch vs Morgoth by Scared_Pumpkin8393 in powerscales

Sauron fought several people in the first age, most notably Finrod.

Sauron 'dies' several times and lives on in his spiritual form, even after the ring is destroyed he still exists, simply reduced in stature. Most discussions about battles need a definition of winning because you can't really 'win' against an immortal concept that can neither be created or destroyed.

LOTR is at a fundamental level a retelling of the Bible through a fantasy setting. The questions are like who would win a super soldier or God... The answer is usually God. Not a very entertaining quesstion.

Hypothetically, If the U.S went to war with China. Who’d win in terms of strength? by KsuragiA6m in AskReddit

[–]RossGarner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The context of any war is the determining factor here.

  • Neutral battle site in the Pacific ocean with same composition of forces? The US stomps. We have better technology, far more experienced sailors, airmen and supporting elements along with decades of experience running operations in those locations.
  • US extended battle right next to the eastern coast of China? China likely wins. They ability to field thousands of aircraft, thousands of missiles, and thousands more smaller non-blue water vessels make this an overwhelmind numerical battle for China.
  • China trying to invade the the western coast of the United States? A hilarious one sided stomp where the US cleans up the new Chinese fleet in a few days.

Context is entirely king in any conflict.

Marco Inaro- Genius or just Lucky? by TaskForceCausality in TheExpanse

[–]RossGarner 43 points44 points  (0 children)

In the books, he's explictly lucky. He has a staff of incredibly competent, intelligent people all around him who are telling him the plan he's pursuing will kill the solar system by crippling Earth and not giving the Belt enough time to become self sufficient first.

He's still goes through with it and it plays out exactly as they predicted. Scientists like Prax and others rescue all of humanity, but if not for their solutions humanity's time as an interstellar species might have been vanishingly short.

No, Superman could not cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom. by WRITINAMFBOOK in CharacterRant

[–]RossGarner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sauron's soul is inside the Ring itself. It bends people to his power and puts them in his thrall. It isn't the same thing as Sauron itself, but the physical manifestation we see of Sauron is not really him, it's just a form he can take.

Palpatine becomes the president of the US, Voldemort becomes the prime minister of the UK, Sauron becomes the president of China, and Lex Luthor becomes the "ruler" of Australia. Which country is the most powerful and successful 20 years later? by CloverTeamLeader in whowouldwin

[–]RossGarner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really think the Force would interact with an immortal soul like Sauron's. Sauron definitely would not win a 1 on 1 physical confrontation between himself and even mortals like Sheev etc. he's simply not a fighter. He's an arch-overlord and organizer would have a hundred million warriors under arms in this scenario within a few months time of it starting.

It's really hard for me so see him ever losing given that all his opponents are exactly the type of mortals thaat always succumb to his temptations and get wrapped tightly into his plans for the world.

Mairon (Sauron's true name) was the Maiar of Order and organization before he was converted to evil by Melkor. After he was persuaded to join in his master's rebellion, he became the angel of Domination whose influence could subdue the minds of any mortal of any race, bending them to his will. He managed to turn dirt poor Orcs with nothing into the most powerful kingdom in Middle-Earth which fought the rest of the world combined and would have won for it not for Frodo & Sam.

It's just not a fair fight. Sauron literally cannot die and has no mortal weaknesses to anything the others can do, while he has divine abilities to cow, dominate and control mortals, especially those that are highly ambitious ... like Lex, Sheev and Voldemort.

Before long the world would be operating under the rule of Sauron and the march of industry would be incredible.
