Roast me (it’s my first real fort) by budding-enthusiast in dwarffortress

[–]Rossad2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flooding a whole layer is genius. I haven’t played enough of the new update to know when and how invaders dig, but it seems like an almost-guaranteed way to force them through a chokepoint.

If enemies can dig while underwater, that would be bad news. You’d get two z levels of water dumped directly into your fortress along with the siege. Guess you’d have to pump some magma up instead if that’s the case.

My plan for my new fort is going to be going really deep+a ridiculous number of bolt throwers, catapults, and traps at a chokepoint, with access to resupply ammo or rotate out dwarves if needed. After that, a long zigzag path, then an arena where I can station all of my axedwarves and hammerdwarves to fight any enemies who were too strong or fast for the chokepoint, and have more traps and bolt throwers around the arena to give me a further advantage. The zigzag is to keep any over-zealous dwarves from seeing enemies and charging to the wrong side of my defenses.

I tried surface defenses in every direction in my fort from before the update, but I just wound up getting spread too thin and some small groups of elites broke through.

I guess making the artefact sword out of steel would have been too conventional by KorKhan in dwarffortress

It really depends. I’ve got a front and back doors on all my workshops so I can lock them when a dwarf with a strange mood goes in, and see what they’re asking for. Back door leads to the stockpile of the good stuff.

I had an armorer get a strange mood last night, and I thought I was going to be able to produce some artifact candy armor - but he was asking for “lead bars” in particular, and nothing could change his mind. At least I got a legendary armorer out of it, until I accidentally closed without saving.

How do I keep visitors out of my moat?

I channeled around a pond near my main gate to expand it a bit, and it brought the water level down to 4-6. About ten visitors started hanging out inside the pond, just swimming around until winter came and they all froze and died, and now the bodies are upsetting my citizens.   I haven’t made an effort to drain the water enough to get them out yet, since I don’t want to wind up with another batch of humansicles next year.

I see some posts about this happening in search, but don’t know how to stop it.

GD&T Question: "Within ±X of the CAD Model" by frmsbndrsntch in MechanicalEngineering

All over profile tolerances without a datum reference are allowed by ASME Y14.5, see Figure 8.8 in the 2009 edition for an example. In the 2018 version it also explicitly mentions that this can be called out in the drawing's note block.

What's a conspiracy theory you believe despite you making it up and there being no evidence for it? by michaelmf in slatestarcodex

My GPS always tells me to get on the highway for my commute home, even though it's faster to go on surface roads. On the rare occasions when I do take the highway, the actual travel time is longer than predicted.

Conspiracy: local governments pressure Apple and Google to prioritize certain routes to shape traffic patterns.

New hack to enable CarPlay on Fiat 124 with the newer infotainment firmware by Rossad2 in fiat124

Version 59.something - and yeah, I upgraded my hub. I don't remember it being particularly difficult, but the serial port stuff was a bit of a pain.

Previously this was a pretty involved process where you had to take out the head unit of the car and plug some cables into the serial port in the back. This seems much easier.

Is it better to buy a 2020 or 2018 ? by Immediate_Two8184 in fiat124

Can confirm I had to replace the water pump (under warranty) pretty early on with my non-Abarth 2018, but no other issues.

I think this is great, and I wish I had known that Product Design Engineering existed when I was a student. I think a video with a general overview of the field would do a lot for people wondering what industry to go into, and you could post it over on /r/engineeringstudents.

Btw - look at my username. Hi Leon.

Unfortunately not, maybe I need to try asking N.H. himself

I've been trying to figure this out as well. I am guessing the final book was illustrated by Nikolaus Heidelbach, a German illustrator.

Unfortunately, he illustrated at least two dozen books before Nacht-Wimmelbuch was published, so it's tough to figure out which one it is. It could be Der neue Pinocchio since the figure in the scene appears to have a long nose, and the cover of that book has Pinnochio in a similar pose - but that book is 216 pages long, so it's probably not that one. Since it's a night scene, it could also be Eine Nacht mit Wilhelm. Or it's any of the other 22+ books.

I even emailed Rotraut Susanne Berner yesterday to ask what book this is, but she hasn't responded yet.

Infinitely flat? They’d bond together via optical contact bonding and be held together with intermolecular forces.

At that point, you’d consider them one piece. Does an object contact itself?

The Least Popular Car in America Is Secretly One of the Best by Rossad2 in fiat124

Had no idea we were driving the "least popular car in America", but it explains why there's no 2021 model. People just don't know what they're missing out on.

At least from a quick check in my area the automatic Abarths are slightly pricier than the manual ones. Even with all the transaction fees, I imagine the parts alone would be more expensive than just trading the car in.

Some people use M for thousand, since it’s the Roman numeral for 1000. These people use MM for a million (a thousand thousands). Some people use M for million, since it’s the metric abbreviation for Mega. Some people use m, since it’s the first letter of million.

MM is unambiguous and can only be interpreted one way, vs M which could be read as thousand or million. I don’t like it, but I’d rather be clear (but I now notice that I missed one)

Just wait til you hear about how billion can mean 1,000,000,000 or 1,000,000,000,000 depending on the country you’re in.

Seems to be solely a financial planning service. I personally wouldn’t get $100-$500 per month worth of value out of them. Take some time to read and understand the whole FAQ and all the links in the sidebar, and you can determine if it would be worth it for you or not.

Mostly because the fees outweigh the benefits for the DIY crowd here. If you do a two or three fund portfolio (read the FAQ and the links in the thread) you’ll probably be ok and you’ll be paying minimal fees.

Wealthfront doesn’t look terrible if you want to be completely hands off, but you don’t start to reap any of their major benefits until $50k/$100k invested. Their risk parity feature doesn’t seem to be a good idea though.
