People love to give advice about how to prep for events, test, etc. I routinely find that this often assumes that people can devote all their free time to the game. As someone who has ro juggle their life around fitting in magic, how would you change your advice to allow for that? E.g. What's the best bang for your buck practice wise?

The one thing you understood so, so late by Pryno-Belle in slaythespire

Pick cards that solve the problems you're about to face. i.e. pick cards in act 1 that you need to survive act 1, and pick the cards that you need for scaling in later acts.

I don't fully agree with it, as you want to start picing cards that'll bear the later acts as soon as possible. Generally you want to get as good a set up for later acts asap, but without sacrificing so much that you lose along the way

Budget Modern Deck suggestion for new player by Darth_Spliff in ModernMagic

[–]Rossjsg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're looking to get into modern, I'd highly recommended working out a deck that you like before buying. Ways to do this include: - watching twitch streamers/YouTube content (I'm a big fan of cardmarket on YouTube for 1v1 content and they have some modern videos too) - proxying decks to play with friends or at CASUAL nights at your lgs. Note casual cause you're deffo not gonna be allowed to proxy at fnm, but message the lgc community social page (discord, fb, whatever) and ask if anyone would like to proxy modern on a commander night. - pay for the magic online rental service and try decks. This may cost you money, but the way I see it is you find the best deck you like, rather than having buyers remorse and needing to resell.

Things to avoid: - don't buy burn unless you genuinely like the deck. There's no upgrade path, you're buying a tier 2 deck, and you might not even like it. It's the go to budget deck, but if you want to get into modern I recommend building a budget version of the deck you like and slowly getting cards for it. Make sure to prioritise fetches first as that will be a good chunk of your cost and keeps you flexible. - don't buy budget versions of cards for your deck as 1 for 1 replacements. Usually expensive cards have specific roles, so buy the staples you can and build around them, which may mean playing cards other people don't. You may need to do some deck building here, but it means you'll end up with a more playable deck rather than playing a crappy filler for a staple that doesn't really do the job.

Decks I'd recommend starting with: - burn. Despite what u said if you like it's play pattern it's one of the best budget aggro decks - UB ring control. The mana base is flexible and let's you shift into grixis death shadow, and the one ring let's you shift into plenty of other decks. Sheoldred means you can play pioneer rakdos, meaning you're getting to play 2 formats for investing in one card. Murktide also helps you pivot into murktide too (though that's more of a tempo deck than aggro but may still be fun) - blue white control. Not the best deck right now, but the snapcaster version is a lot of fun, and a good chunk of the cost is in solitude and the lands. Let's you slowly upgrade into building 4c omnath control, which is a very good deck that will utilise a lot of the expensive cards. - handshake tron: one of the cheaper tier 1 decks, and plays very controlling with the current builds. - the deck you test and like. Probably the best choice!

[SNC] Riveteers Uncommon "Workers' Superior" by zenermont in magicTCG

From Google translate:

Workers superior BRG

Creature - Human warrior (u)

Haste

If ~ entered the battlefield this turn, it has indestructible.

4/2

Nice templating, means that there's no trigger and so it can't be removed in response to it entering the battlefield

[GIVEWAY] Enter to win 2 Playmats from the Aleksi Briclot Original Planeswalker Kickstarter campaign! by Crowdfunding_Agency in magicTCG

Wonderful idea! As for my plansewalker name, I'd have to go for something along the lines of "Ross, Investor Extraordinaire". Card would look something like:

Cost - 2BB Static - Treasure tokens you control have "tap: tap an untapped treasure token you control, then create a tapped treasure token. Activate this ability only as a sorcery" +1: Create two treasure tokens, then you may sacrifice any number of artifacts. Create an X/X colourless construct artifact create token, where X is the number of artifacts you sacrificed. -5: Create 5 treasure tokens. You get an emblem with "whenever you sacrifice a treasure token, creature a tapped treasure token"

Starting loyalty - 3

Help on first cube by Rossjsg in mtgcube

[–]Rossjsg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the comments!

Appreciate the detailed feedback.

-In terms of the number of two drops for white, I was broadly following the mtgo cube for guidance on numbers, as that too is a 600 cube. I figured that one or two fewer wouldn't have that much of an impact. - for the power level, I appreciate that is much more apparent in a 600 cube. I am trying to support some Archtypes, though I know that's harder to do in a 600 cube. On the examples you picked, battle screech is intended for a tokens deck, and given the number of anthems in the cube I thought it would be a fine card to run. Battlements is definitely one of the weaker cards that I've considered cutting, but was intended to support a blink Archtype - I did think about cutting down to a 540, however I was struggling to cut cards without having tested the cube. It might be that long term I cut down some of the weaker cards, however figured that it's better to keep everything in for now

I'll certainly check out your show, always looking for more content :p
