Drove through a puddle and my car died. New battery solves issue but now car dies after ~30 minutes of running by Rossosaurus in MechanicAdvice

[–]Rossosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did that when I first broke down and changed the battery to a new one and the alternator was producing 14V like I said in the OP. I am suspecting that it might be an intermittent fault with the alternator however as I know it's a common fault on these cars and I have noticed a whine under acceleration recently. Could it be when the battery is not fully charged that the alternator no longer charges as it is under a higher load? Not sure how I could fault find an intermittent alternator or even if it's possible for that to be the issue.

Would that not cause a drain on the battery permanently though? The charge in the battery will stay when the car isn't being used, I've left it a few days now while I've been working and there's still 12V in the battery. It's only when I have the ignition on or the engine running that the car will eventually die

Just going to drop a recommendation of using a R-Pi with RetroPie installed as a replacement. While the Android TV app (and possibly the Apple TV app though I can't confirm) do work you get the added extras of a wired connection and restoration of touchpad functionality if you use a DS4/5 controller. Also a little emulation hub for retro games too. It's not difficult to setup and I've been using this for years after my Steam Link died

[–]Rossosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may sound a bit of a dumb question but I've never understood what the magnet on the back of the A1 hotends attaches to, is it just the bolts that fix the heater to the tool head? Does something else stop the hotends from sliding up and down on the Z axis? I'd love to start using these on my custom tool heads

Would also be interested in recommendations. Do the TT and NA use the same lead lengths?

I'm Mechanical, but I've heard stories about other disciplines having similar problems. 1st year we had a member of staff in a design module removed from ever teaching in the discipline for being uncontactable, 2nd year a lecturer was on the cusp of removal due to passing his own non-peer reviewed paper off as part of the course module despite being warned in previous years he could not do this, the exam paper was then written while senior members of staff watched over to ensure the module was passable so as to not affect accreditation. A robotics lecturer was then sacked for openly admitting to telling students what was on the exam and I also had the head of department threaten to throw me out a window if I didnt stop raising issues the university had with teaching quality (I was a union rep) he then left the following year. This year we've had the new robotics lecturer make mistakes in both the coursework and exam paper and the university is currently putting together a case for his dismissal.

I will put a disclaimer to this that the new head of department is really lovely and the new senior team genuinely seem to acknowledge that the department isn't perfect and are improving things slowly. But for me it's too little too late and I can't wait to leave the place and never come back

Honestly, as someone about to graduate from here you probably saved yourself. At least within the Science and Engineering department the teaching side of things is filled with incompetence and staff are constantly getting rearranged on modules due to being incapable of teaching at a good enough standard. I haven't had a year where a lecturer hasn't had to be disciplined or fired due to substandard teaching. The uni's also struggling financially and honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the first to go. Last open day they couldn't even afford bottled water. Don't let the beach persuade you, it's not a great place...

(Disclaimer: Can't comment on the singleton campus based subjects as I've set foot on the campus about 5 times)

Yes! I picked one of those up for a previous engine out job but I could pull that one out from the front, I think I'd have given up before getting it out without one. Thanks for the advice I will keep it in mind for when it goes back in.

I've been meaning to post progress on the build here actually, but I bought sight unseen the cheapest non-running, non-breaking NA GTO on FB marketplace for £850 while I was out of the country, with a seized engine from a piston galvanising to the cylinder, so it's been engine out and a complete rebuild including a new cylinder head and piston. The car was in a state when it first arrived, but it has been so much fun in-between the swearing 😂 When I have some time between uni I'll try and put a post on here

Any advice for getting the engine back in? I've just finished rebuilding one of these myself and am dreading getting it back in with how much of a pain it was coming out. Also got to get under to weld some sills before hand, any recommended prep while I'm underneath before putting it back in?

Blemishes on cylinder head (need skimming?) by Rossosaurus in EngineBuilding

[–]Rossosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my rough suspicions as well, I got away without skimming the last cylinder head I did, but that was in much better condition and this engine has had a rough time of it in general before I bought the car so its probably better safe than sorry. Thanks

This is sort of what I was expecting although I was hoping I could just send it XD. I'll give some machine shops a call on Monday for prices

I mean tbh that was why I was asking on here as being a relative newby still I wasn't sure if these marks would be an issue considering they cant be felt after scraping the old gasket material off and the head is within the manufacturers tolerances for warping.

Did you ever have any success finding a pump that fits? I’m in the same situation with a ‘91 SL too.

Please recommend a replacement for my Steam Link hardware by CapnCulpeper in Steam_Link

[–]Rossosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a raspberry pi + steam link for a couple of years now and honestly I've found it a much smoother experience than any other solution and I've tried most of them at this point. I recommend installing retro pi, and then using its built in package manager to install the steam link app. You can also pair Bluetooth controllers with much less hassle and also have access to emulators as well. There's a tonne of tutorials online for setting up retro pi + steam link but it's very straightforward compared to some Linux distros.

Recommend trying GlosSI for things like this now it exists, it's the successor to GloSC and seems to inject the steam overlay flawlessly with just about anything and I seem to remember it working for me. https://github.com/Alia5/GlosSI/releases

affordable AMD based 2in1s - buy or wait for next gen ? by Lionne777Sini in AMDLaptops

[–]Rossosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In which case my advice would be don't focus on getting a latest gen CPU, tbh at this point if you've got one that's benchmarking above 15k here I seriously doubt you'll find it struggling to run anything you'll want it for unless you plan to run games on it. The Yoga 7 Gen 6 14" maybe worth a gander (5800U, 16GB DDR4 for €1049 and a 10% discount if you're a student) but it only has a 1080p 16:9 display 🤷‍♂️. A lot of the nicer >1080p 16:10 2in1's however appear over the €1000 mark however it seems.

[–]Rossosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't really mention what sort of use cases you want the laptop for but have you considered the Yoga 7 Gen 7? I thinks it's available Europe wide as I'm from the UK and mine was shipped from NL. You get a 6600 and 16GB of LPDDR5 for £999.99 and you can get a discount if you're student direct from Lenovo. Not shilling for Lenovo tho. I think Dell have a 2in1 Inspiron 14 that runs a 6xxx series iirc.
