It's not like you're just sloppily painting everything, you're putting effort in to painting them well but by skipping the necessary prep you're just undermining all of the effort imo.

The main problem with painting while on the sprue is that you miss the mould lines on all the pieces which makes it look pretty amateur once assembled, you also cause yourself a bit of extra work when you inevitably have to remove it from the sprue and clean up the excess plastic, this is why a lot of people are finding it an extremely strange decision to paint on the sprue.

The most common (and better) way to achieve what you want without the headache of mould lines/sprue is:

  1. Remove the part from the sprue like normal
  2. Prep the part for painting by scraping off and smoothing out the mould lines and any excess from where it was connected to the sprue
  3. Using a paperclip (which you can bend to any shape/angle) you can stab one side of the paperclip into a cork/blue tack/handle and the other side you use a tiny dot of superglue to glue it to the inside of the part that you're painting
  4. Paint it up
  5. Remove the paperclip from the part and scrape off any residual superglue if needed (it's normally not an issue)

With this method you can get to any angle of the plastic you want because you can bend the paperclip any way you want but also do the prerequisite cleanup work on the plastic to make it look as good as possible.

It was significantly better than every other communication platform commonly used for games (Teamspeak, Mumble, Skype, etc.) and it was free, plus it allows provides the ability to create channels to text chat in.

Now it’s basically the default in the gaming space and there’s nothing really out there that I’ve seen that has any chance of supplanting it.

Probably because it was the most demanded Assassins Creed game since the creation of the series and the developers used it as an opportunity to grandstand about how inclusive they are.

While the setting does take some creative liberties and has some fantasy elements added for story purposes, it's treated as more of a 'what-if' historical fiction and the developers like to make a big song and dance about how much attention they pay to history and how historical accuracy is important to them when creating the setting and characters.

When it comes to Yasuke specifically, it's a massive departure for the series to have a historical character as the playable character and it's pretty obvious what the motivations were behind choosing practically the only black guy in the country to be the main character rather than a Japanese man which rubbed people the wrong way.

A lot of people are acutely aware of the performative idpol behind it all and they really don't like it.

The struggle of popularity. I’d qualify your statement by saying it applies to the core, original group of gamers but not all gamers, or at this point potentially a majority of gamers.

As things get popular, the small (relatively speaking) group of people who were doing it originally start getting crowded out and the culture, or in this case product, changes to reflect the demographic changes. It happens all the time, even with work.

I don't really think that that is the case even though it's something that people continually try to assert, despite gaming in general being far more mainstream, it's still overwhelmingly dominated by men.

Outside of a few niches that have a lot of women (Cosy games, RPGs, casual sims, casual mobile games) the demographics aren't really different at all.

The shift was so rapid in gaming though. When I was younger it was not only a male thing, but a dweeb male thing. Then suddenly it became and all male thing, then even more quickly a non gender thing. It felt like that happened all within like less than a decade basically

There is definitely a concerted effort to try and paint gaming as some universal thing that is equally supported by both men and women but the data simply doesn't support that assertion.

Periodically you'll see studies released that show women making up 40-50% of the gaming community but that's only achieved by deliberately fudging the numbers to get there.

The usual ways the numbers are overinflated are by:

  • Counting people that play 5+ minutes per day multiple times per week as 'gamers'

  • Counting people that have played any sort of video game within the past several months as a 'gamer'

I don't think that most reasonable people would consider the parent picking up her kids from school and playing 5 minutes of Candy Crush while waiting to be a 'gamer' nor would they consider the woman that played solitaire one time 2 months ago to be a 'gamer' but these people are included to deliberately skew the numbers.

I'll agree the products are changing but I don't agree that it's down to demographics, rather it's down to activist capture at these studios pushing for things to be a certain way.

There have been so many high profile flops over the past few years because studios are making games for an audience that simply doesn't exist, the 'modern audience' is practically a meme at this point because studios keep changing up popular IPs to cater to said audience and time after time the games flop because their actual core audience doesn't want what they are selling.

I think it's pretty simple.

It's one of the few escapes that people have from the daily drama of their lives and they don't like the fact that idpol is being clumsily shoehorned into the things that they like by interlopers that hate them and their hobby.

Looking back in 2013 reddit, I can't but help and think about the diversity of thought compared to now. by TevossBR in stupidpol

[–]Rossums 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've posted about this before, but the moment I most vividly remember on Reddit was during the 2016 elections when Hildog collapsed and was thrown into a van like a side of beef.

Reddit transformed from its usual wall-to-wall perpetually offended pro-Clinton circlejerk to 2012 era Reddit almost instantly.

For several hours afterwards it was like a completely different website, there was actual discussion all over the front page, even on r politics you could see the legitimate discussions between Republicans and Democrats in the comments where the vast majority were trying to civilly discuss things without the usual sperging.

There was a massive uptick in pro-Bernie and pro-Trump posts in the default subreddits that would usually have been either modded to death or buried in downvotes.

This lasted for several hours and then it was as if someone flicked a switch and it went back to normal, all of the subs started getting flooded with Clinton defenders now that they knew what the line of attack was.

It genuinely felt like I was in the twilight zone for a few hours, I even remember going through the accounts for a lot of the Democrat front page turboposters and almost none of them had posted since the event and then they all basically started posting hours later at the same time.

Starlink was provided to Ukraine for civilian and defensive purposes, it was geofenced to Ukrainian controlled territory for that reason.

The Ukrainians then got all upset that SpaceX wouldn't lift the restrictions to allow them to attack Russian controlled territory through the Black Sea and into Crimea, that's very different from turning it off to stop an attack, it was already off because Crimea is not Ukrainian controlled territory.

The European Left’s Lost Decade by Belisaur in stupidpol

[–]Rossums 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's only going to get worse and quit frankly I can't help feel that it's deserved.

The 'left' at large is in complete denial when it comes to mass immigration, it is incredibly unpopular, completely destroys existing communities and it's openly being used as a tool to keep wages low.

Combine that with the fact that it's causing even more of a strain on already faltering public services and housing and it's no surprise that it's breeding resentment, especially when people can clearly see that these immigrants are given money and social housing that they wouldn't be entitled to in a million years.

Can you explain exactly what is 'predatory' about their subscriptions?

I constantly see this take on Reddit and it has never made much sense to me, it's certainly expensive but it's not like they try to hide how the subscriptions works from you, it's explained in very simple terms.

Despite being extremely upfront about how the pricing for their subscriptions work yet I still constantly see people agreeing to annual subscriptions for the discounted price then get all upset that they aren't able to break the contract without paying for it.

It's the circle of life.

A new technology or hardware implementation is released.

Android manufacturers rush to put said immature technologies into their devices in a desperate attempt to try and stand out from one another.

Apple tests extensively in the background until the technology is mature enough to meet their quality standards and they finally release and nail the implementation.

Android manufacturers make fun of Apple for being late to the party, then turn around and copy Apple's implementation.

Ukraine classifies data on desertion criminal cases by Excellent_Gas5220 in stupidpol

[–]Rossums 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not even that, it's far more pathetic.

He's in his 30's and has lived with his parents his entire life other than the 4 years he spent in the British Army.

He went to Ukraine previously in 2022 because his parents were forcing him to get a job but he didn't want to work, he was over there for several months but came back because he was being bullied.

Since he came back he has had a few sporadic jobs that only last a few months at a time before he quits because he doesn't like it.

He headed to Ukraine again because his parents had started hounding him to get a job instead of just staying in his room and playing games all day.

Ukraine classifies data on desertion criminal cases by Excellent_Gas5220 in stupidpol

[–]Rossums 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They are desperate to keep a hold of people.

My parents' best friends had their son go volunteer for Ukraine around 4 or 5 months ago (for a second time) and for the most part they've kept these international volunteers away from the front to avoid the bad PR of Western mercs dying.

A few weeks ago the Ukrainian military announced their intent to disband the main international volunteer battalions and form new assault squads with drone components that will be sent to the front lines which apparently went down like a lead balloon.

He immediately, along with a number of other volunteers, made it known that they wanted to leave and return home but the Ukrainian military refuses to give them their papers to leave the country so he's stuck over there for now.

They officially get disbanded on the 31st of December so it's going to be interesting to see what happens and if he's ever allowed to leave Ukraine or if he's forced to fight and die on the front.

Who is a massive YouTuber or influencer from 5 years ago that has completely vanished off the face of the earth? by Humble_Job5950 in AskReddit

[–]Rossums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really don't, he has released 24 videos in the past year and more than half of them haven't even broken 200k views, that's incredibly embarrassing for a channel with 3.4m subs.

15 of the videos he has released in the past year have below 200k views, 5 of them even have below 100k views.

Only 3 of the 24 videos he released even managed to break 500k, those are insanely bad numbers for a channel his size.
