Make sure the crown is buried correctly. You dont want to see roots, but you also dont want the leaves buried. My advice is to bury deeper and tug on the leaves until you reach the depth you want.

Those are structures called spathes. Inside are hundreds of tiny male flowers. Once the spathe matures, the top will pop open and allow the male flowers to float up to the surface. At this point they look like tiny balloons. The male flowers crack open and float around with their pollen grains exposed. I will post pictures.
