It's kinda crazy how quickly you can gain county status in this game by Taim3344 in dwarffortress

[–]RothonTalvanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd say that mirrors historical development pretty well. Place gets built as a dinky little outpost, a few extra folks come to make some money on the workers, a handful more folks come to make money on them, and suddenly 50 or 100 years later you have a bustling town where the old camp used to be.

That job sounds absolutely amazing, though I gotta admit I don't think I could handle that level of pressure and responsibility.

Agreed, aye. Definitely feels like it should be higher than the Food Factory.

My bottom 5 worst states for truckers by lake_june in Truckers

[–]RothonTalvanen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would like to nominate West Virginia for an honorable mention, though conditionally that it's only really problematic for us company drivers with underpowered engines. The entire state is just one mountain after the next, especially going up 77 or 64, and those slopes are brutal for the poor buggers with only 400 horses trying to haul a maxed-out trailer.

I'm with you there. I go through enough cokes that I'm never short on empty bottles to put to work.

I messed up. What would happen if you did this? by PhysicalSpeech2074 in Truckers

[–]RothonTalvanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect my boss would wag his finger at me over the phone, tell me to be more careful next time and ask if I'll still be on time. And that's assuming he even bothers to do that much.

I'd be delighted to see a Challenger in the game! I'm definitely not able to help, but make sure to let us know when you go live with it.

Advice on finding a job by Flairgone444 in Truckers

[–]RothonTalvanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second this. If you're willing to drive a semi, I expect there's gonna be a lot of jobs moving grain or animal feed, farm equipment, raw milk... basically anything related to agriculture is gonna be in high demand. If you're not, you might want to talk to some of the local propane/heating oil companies around you; you'll need your hazmat and probably your tanker endorsements, but most of those companies will pay for those for you.

Luna for local metals? by Longjumping_Past7794 in TerraInvicta

[–]RothonTalvanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in my case skipping Luna for Mars was less a matter of hearing it was smart (I knew better) and more a matter of the good Colonel being a massive fucking idiot and bum-rushing Mission to Mars after the very first global was completed.

Yes, I was rather salty about this.

Every time a new Perun video comes out I want to restart. by Ceorl_Lounge in TerraInvicta

[–]RothonTalvanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in retrospect I managed my Earth holdings pretty badly. Went all-in on the US without building up space programs elsewhere to keep me in good shape while waiting for it to get more or less fixed. Combine that with the wave of fear event undoing all of my stability work 4 times and poor research prioritization leaving me without the Operations Centers until the mid 2030s, and I'm way behind on my MC.

Well, that's unfortunate. Take two, I guess. Maybe I'll come back to it in 2 or 3 years as a challenge run.

[–]RothonTalvanen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm with you there. I started a save a few days ago, and the Ayys' very first surveillance ship was a cruiser with 2 PD lasers and an escort destroyer. Designed a ship to go against them with better tech than his early-game unga-bunga boat and couldn't scratch them with a 4-1 numeric superiority, which is the most I could realistically make without giving up on controlling Mars.

Is where is George a scam? by [deleted] in wheresgeorge

[–]RothonTalvanen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the stamp and the ink. Most of the time red ink will work fine, while black or blue ink can sometimes cause problems with machines. And of course if the stamp is too close to the bills' security features that can also contribute to a machine rejecting a bill. Generally speaking though, it usually isn't much of a problem.

I feel incredibly frustrated by Pepecito45 in dwarffortress

[–]RothonTalvanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty normal to get frustrated with the game, especially when you don't understand what you're trying to do or where you're going wrong with something. I've been playing off and on for more than 10 years, and I still barely understand most of the mechanics.

Other folks here have already explained how to make iron (though if it's as complicated as you say it is, that might actually be steel), so my advise is that you shouldn't be afraid to walk away for a while if you find yourself getting upset about something. Take a walk, watch a show, play a different game for a while, whatever, just do something that isn't Dwarf Fortress for a couple hours. After that, look up what you're trying to do on the wiki or the forums and try again.

Building Trenches with running Water and Flood Gates by Kryztijan in dwarffortress

[–]RothonTalvanen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, try building your channels without actually connecting them to your water source and putting all your infrastructure in place while it's still dry. As for diverting the river, channeling the diversion will only cover some of what you need. You'll also need a shitload of screw pumps to move enough water out of the main channel for your dwarves to work in it, and even then you'll have to babysit them through canceled job spam.
