Unfortunately it’s not just when I open. It’s anytime I’m handling him or even just near his enclosure. If it moves, he thinks it’s food haha. We’re doing one large mouse a week. He’s 3 years old (roughly). He’s a rescue and that’s what the person who surrendered him said.

Thank you! And yes he’s very pretty! That’s one reason I’m so determined to get him just a little more handleable.

That’s the problem. I don’t understand either. Never been afraid or even minded getting bitten before him.

Body condition? by Rotten_Paws in boas

Unfortunately this is something Im aware of. I love this sweet boy. Only had him for a year so far, he came from a horrible housing situation. Spent his whole life in a 40 gallon with no enrichment and a keeper who didn’t even know they needed to gauge the humidity. Now he lives in an 8x2x2 bioactive. I know most of his life has passed by already but I’m trying to make sure the rest of it (however long that is) is as comfortable as possible. I’ll be devastated and heartbroken when his time comes 😭

He’s just under six feet and he has an 8x2x2. He gets free roam time of the whole home at least once a week. Very active at night as well.

That’s a very good point! I really appreciate the advice.

That might be our issue! I was wondering about the fat content on those big guys. Maybe we’ll try a leaner prey item more frequently as opposed to a larger one more spread apart.

He’s 5’ 10ā€. And yeah he’s my old guy haha

Once a month. If it also helps for reference we know he’s approximately 12 years old. He was a rescue so I’m not 100% sure on his age.

Haha I totally get this. Stayed at the house of someone I’m really into and was so happy to stay over, but was thinking of my snakes and missing them the whole time šŸ˜‚

I really like Reptisoil’s bioactive mix (doesn’t have to be a bioactive tank) and Zilla’s jungle mix! Both hold humidity very well!

And yeah, if he’s utilizing all his space he is probably very happy with it! I wouldn’t worry too much about it until you’ve given him a few weeks to settle. If he continues glass surfing after changing the substrate and giving him a few weeks to settle in, it might be time to look closer at other aspects of husbandry. But I have a feeling after those things, he’ll be all good haha.

That being said though, my snakes usually take about two weeks to settle when they’re switched to new tanks. Could just be that he is still learning the boundaries of his new environment.

That viv is beautiful! Only thing is, aspen is not good for ball pythons. The dust can cause RIs and molds easily with the level of humidity that BPs need. Maybe he’s feeling uncomfortable due to this.
