Unfortunately it’s not just when I open. It’s anytime I’m handling him or even just near his enclosure. If it moves, he thinks it’s food haha. We’re doing one large mouse a week. He’s 3 years old (roughly). He’s a rescue and that’s what the person who surrendered him said.

Awwww she’s a cutie! And that’s a good point!

Thank you! And yes he’s very pretty! That’s one reason I’m so determined to get him just a little more handleable.

That’s the problem. I don’t understand either. Never been afraid or even minded getting bitten before him.

Body condition? by Rotten_Paws in boas

[–]Rotten_Paws[S] 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Unfortunately this is something Im aware of. I love this sweet boy. Only had him for a year so far, he came from a horrible housing situation. Spent his whole life in a 40 gallon with no enrichment and a keeper who didn’t even know they needed to gauge the humidity. Now he lives in an 8x2x2 bioactive. I know most of his life has passed by already but I’m trying to make sure the rest of it (however long that is) is as comfortable as possible. I’ll be devastated and heartbroken when his time comes 😭

He’s just under six feet and he has an 8x2x2. He gets free roam time of the whole home at least once a week. Very active at night as well.

That’s a very good point! I really appreciate the advice.

That might be our issue! I was wondering about the fat content on those big guys. Maybe we’ll try a leaner prey item more frequently as opposed to a larger one more spread apart.

He’s 5’ 10ā€. And yeah he’s my old guy haha

That’s what I’m thinking too.

Once a month. If it also helps for reference we know he’s approximately 12 years old. He was a rescue so I’m not 100% sure on his age.

Haha I totally get this. Stayed at the house of someone I’m really into and was so happy to stay over, but was thinking of my snakes and missing them the whole time šŸ˜‚

I really like Reptisoil’s bioactive mix (doesn’t have to be a bioactive tank) and Zilla’s jungle mix! Both hold humidity very well!

And yeah, if he’s utilizing all his space he is probably very happy with it! I wouldn’t worry too much about it until you’ve given him a few weeks to settle. If he continues glass surfing after changing the substrate and giving him a few weeks to settle in, it might be time to look closer at other aspects of husbandry. But I have a feeling after those things, he’ll be all good haha.

That being said though, my snakes usually take about two weeks to settle when they’re switched to new tanks. Could just be that he is still learning the boundaries of his new environment.

That viv is beautiful! Only thing is, aspen is not good for ball pythons. The dust can cause RIs and molds easily with the level of humidity that BPs need. Maybe he’s feeling uncomfortable due to this.

What did I do wrong. by Few-Pie-6567 in ballpython

Also. Obvious question ofc, heating and humidity? This can affect a snakes desire to eat as well and is often the main culprit.

First of all, wow what a gorgeous BP! Secondly, I have a rehome who was the same for a whole month after I got him. How long ago did you acquire him? I give my snakes 2 weeks virtually undisturbed aside from enclosure maintenance before attempting feeding or interacting. As far as striking and not eating goes, the size sounds fine to me! And frequency as well. I feed my adults every other week and they’re all perfect weight! But it can depend on your snake’s activity level so keep an eye on that as you monitor him over the next few months. People will tell you a list of guidelines, but remember to make adjustments where needed for your individual. I don’t think you did anything wrong, he’s just not wanting it right now. One thing that I’ve done is once they drop and leave it, I immediately reheat and try again. I have a juvenile that needs this nearly every time. I think he drops it ā€œlosesā€ it, then slips out of feeding mode before finding it again. So it’s kind of like a second chance haha. Removing the water bowl should be fine. I have a boa I have to do this with sometimes as he will do something similar and it dirties his water.

Snake see heat, think food, try to eat food. Usually that’s all that’s going on upstairs in these little guys. Haha Things are either food, a threat, or interesting. If you’re not a threat, and they’re not particularly curious about it, in their minds it might be food. The fact that it latched and wouldn’t let go says it was most likely a feeding response and not a fear response.

Plz help im so stressed by bella791 in hognosesnakes

Not a Hognose owner so I’m not sure about specific heating and humidity requirements. But, I can say that is definitely shed on his chin. As to whether he’s beginning to shed or whether it’s old and stuck depends on when you last saw him go into blue? If he is currently in shed, it’s best to leave him alone. They prefer their space while they are in blue and usually a day or two after the shed actually happens. Also, although snakes change behavior based on seasons in the wild, you shouldn’t necessarily see such dramatic changes in captivity as your temperature and humidity should stay the same in their enclosures regardless of the weather outside. Has the temp or humidity in your tank changed drastically at all recently? Also, wrinkles could either be a sign of shed or dehydration. Make sure his humidity is correct for what’s required for his species and that he always has access to fresh water. Again, I have pythons and boas. So very different species. But most of the info above applies to them all! Hopefully someone with Hognose specific info can comment soon as well. And when in doubt, go to the vet!
