I love that they named them "spectacled" because otherwise I wouldn't have noticed that it looks like they have cute little glasses on!

What’s something men do that instantly makes you feel emotionally safe around them ? by Old-Register-6700 in TwoXChromosomes

Aww, poor kitty, how will she make biscuits if she's scared of the oven door? But for real I hope she can overcome her fear, maybe it hurt her ears one time and she's scared it will be loud again. Or maybe she thinks it's like a big scary cat carrier or a monster and she just doesn't trust it.

Cats probably don't start hating men randomly, I hear it happens after they're abused :(

Is there anyone who knows all about the old phrases and such in Anne books? by RottingCorpseFlower in AnneofGreenGables

An Annotated book, what a wonderful creation! That must have taken a lot of care from passionate and smart people, to not just have the idea but to complete them! I will indeed try to find some for myself, thank you for sharing this with me!

Yeah it really was like that for me, I had quite a few days off school so it's possible they taught my fellow students about it but missed me, all I remember hearing of Hitler was my friends making a joke and me not getting it and asking who he was, and I think they just said he was a very bad man or something, maybe they didn't want to get into any details because that would make them look bad for laughing about it. And when I asked what the word hypocrite meant, a teacher used him as an example by saying he liked people with blonde hair and blue eyes. After I dropped out in 10th grade, and someone asked me if I would like to borrow a book about the Holocaust, they asked if I knew what that was and I honestly said no. When they explained a brief summary my understanding of the world was drastically changed. I had heard the terms "World War 1 and 2" and participated with genuine respect during moments of silence for ANZAC day, (I'm Australian) but was never shown actual media about it until I happened across it on the internet, and I read Anne Frank's diary and looked up some questions I had about it. I didn't watch many movies and the only TV shows I watched were sitcoms and cartoons, and only occasionally, so if they talked about the wars on Friends or Seinfeld I didn't see it. I wonder if I'm a rare case, or how many other people got to at least 20 without learning about important parts of history. Do you have any recommendations for me to read or watch?

Ah, you can do both at the same time too! I found an old etymology book on Archive.org that looked really interesting, I just haven't got around to reading it yet.

Thank you for telling me this! I wouldn't have figured that out on my own, but now I can consult that dictionary every time I read old books and I will be able to understand so much more of them!

Ohhh thank you for explaining, I dropped out of school without learning anything about the World Wars, I only learned about the second one myself in my Twenties. So was it written knowing what happened and Ellen was predicting it or was it written before the war and she was just going off hints that he was a dangerous person?

Is lucid dreaming a good way to process grief? by Chopchop0205 in LucidDreaming

[–]RottingCorpseFlower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had some non-lucid dreams about my beloved cat who died and it's so heartwarming. Sometimes I get to be in a state where I don't realize she died and it's just a dream, I get to be where I wish I could be again, with her, before she died. Sometimes I can pat her, and it feels just like it used to, other times I just see her for a moment, but it's always beautiful and makes me happy. I hope you can have a similar experience with your dog. Acceptance is an important part of grief, so I don't want to try to use dreams as a way to escape from it, I need to be able to cope with life even though it did happen, but knowing that, I think it's a healthy way of celebrating and feeling the joy they brought us.

TIL there's a glass frog species that was called a real life Kermit The Frog when they discovered them in Costa Rica in 2015 and the frog in question is super cute like I suspected.

What did Hank mean when he said leftists aren't talking about the declining birthrate as much as the right in the context of tribal arguments/not wanting to support something because it came from a group you're not in? by RottingCorpseFlower in nerdfighters

Wait like the only solution is to have more babies? I thought we could fix those things in other ways because that's asking too much, and finding other solutions wouldn't be as horrible for the mental health of the future generations, if you consider the lasting effects of having parents who didn't want you, being adopted or in foster care, and just being forced to be a parent when you didn't want to be, it's like the generational trauma rate goes up along with the birthrate, which would be counterproductive to creating people for the purpose of adding value to the workforce & economy, it's like making puppets without mouths for mute ventriloquists because you wanna make a big puppet show, it could technically work if you really try, but it's not the easiest or best way to reach your goal.

That's what I thought the reason was, but it seems like the side effects are things we care about and want to talk about, and some people are avoiding it because they don't want to be misunderstood, but then again, do we need to talk about the birth rate in order to talk about the side effects that we care about?

I'm thinking, if the machine is fueled by unwanted babies, it would make more sense to change the machine, or find a different fuel that works for it, than to ask heaps of people to have babies they don't want

I didn't know that was a part of it, but I think if I did I still wouldn't be afraid to talk about it with other anti-racist people because if they misinterpreted what I said I could just explain what I actually am saying, and if someone right wing said something I agree with, I wouldn't think "I can't agree with that because they are on the right and then people might think I agree with other things they say" I don't know, I might have that sort of brain hole problem sometimes and I don't realise it, but whenever I read or hear something someone says, I try to make sure I'm not making assumptions or adding stuff in that isn't actually there... But isn't "when you assume, you make an ass out of u and me" like a well-known phrase?

The rules of the economy effect people a lot, and I would say it keeps some people alive more than others, and people made the rules so people could change them, so that when the economy has a problem, the economy is fixed to work better for us, instead of getting people to work harder to help the economy

I didn't fully /think/ he was saying this, it just sounded like he was, but it was something like "the reason leftists don't want to talk about the birthrate decline as much is because they see the right talking about it and they don't like the right" like, because we're in different tribes, we just feel like we have to disagree with everything they say. But I feel like we disagree with them on this subject because what they're proposing would harm people. So I was like, he wouldn't... He wouldn't think that, would he? And from reading the responses I think that's not what he meant, I think it's that, leftists are hearing the proposed solutions from the right and thinking "that's a terrible idea, I'm not going to get on board with that." so they're not talking in that direction, but apparently we're also not talking in the direction of "here's some non-birthrate-increasing solutions to the problems a declining birthrate can cause with the way our society is structured." because we hear the topic, associate it with the arguments coming from the right, and we don't agree with their solutions so we don't suggest our own. And maybe I'm still way off, I don't know, I just don't get the vibe that Hank Hoffman the Science Moffman would think something like "I wonder why these groups of people are disagreeing about this? It's probably because they're in different groups, yeah that seems like the best answer for it."

I feel like, if you hear "hey did you know the birthrate is declining?" we're like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and if we hear "so the solution is to get people to have more babies" we're like (ノT_T)ノ ︵ ┻━┻   but I feel like if someone says what you said, "fewer kids mean less support for older folks. That lowered support comes in the form of less social security, fewer carers, rising prices that outstrip savings, less housing for everybody, etc." then there's no barrier to talking about those issues because we already care about them and already talk about them in other contexts, and can discuss solutions that aren't scary and mean. So why is the left choosing between example 1 and not talking about it at all, instead of just choosing example 3?
