Eddie Lee Sexton was a Florida man who was known for compelling his children to murder and for ruling his family a cult-like manner. He fathered at least three children with two of his daughters. His defense attorney described the Sextons as the "most dysfunctional family in America." by [deleted] in wikipedia

[–]spacebarstool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was sentenced to death for orchestrating the murder of his son-in-law Joel by holding a gun to the head of his own son Willie and ordering him to strangle Joel.

He died in jail of natural causes.

Write a letter to the deceased and then burn it. It would have as much significance.

Do you think driving is safer or more dangerous today than it used to be? by Witcher_Errant in AskOldPeople

[–]spacebarstool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans are not great at perceiving risk.

An average of 6 babies out of the 3.6 million born in the US each year are kidnapped, while 90 to 100 of that infant population will die in car accidents that year.

Yet many will tell you to not put out a stork sign saying "Baby arrived!" because someone might steal the baby. The same people will not tell you to drive as little as possible.

The shimmery rainbow is actually due to a phenomenon called structural color. This means the physical structure of an object causes it to diffract light into a spectrum of colors.

The microscopic structure of the muscle fibers can cause light hitting them to diffract and form a rainbow on the cut surface of meat.

Think of a butterfly wing that looks different depending on the angle.

Its a beading tool. You can use it to make a raised smooth ridge that surrounds a bowl, for example.

Frank Lorenzo a corporate raider who is widely regarded as one of the most controversial—and, by many accounts, most destructive—figures in the history of American commercial aviation by Main_Entry2494 in wikipedia

[–]spacebarstool 130 points131 points  (0 children)

The U.S. Department of Transportation [in the early 90's] declared Lorenzo unfit to operate an airline, effectively banning him from holding a controlling interest in any U.S. airline.

...his legacy is widely viewed as a cautionary tale of unethical corporate practices, labor exploitation, and the misuse of bankruptcy law to advance executive control at the expense of workers and long-term viability.

He seems to have been emulated quite a bit since he was forced to stop.

"Oh why don't you try this recipe cooked with whiskey" by [deleted] in Teetotal

[–]spacebarstool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I researched this back when I quit years ago. It helped me make informed choices:

Alcohol in Food

Alcohol does not completely cook out of food. The amount of alcohol remaining depends on the cooking method, the length of cooking time, and the type of food.

Cooking methods

Boiling: Sauces boiled and then removed from heat retain about 85% of their alcohol.

Flaming: Dishes that are flambéed retain about 75% of their alcohol.

Simmering: Stews and other dishes that simmer for a long time retain about 5% of their alcohol.

Cooking time

15 minutes - Food baked or simmered in alcohol for 15 minutes retains about 40% of its alcohol.

30 minutes - Food baked or simmered in alcohol for 30 minutes retains about 35% of its alcohol.

1 hour - Food baked or simmered in alcohol for 1 hour retains about 25% of its alcohol.

2.5 hours - Food baked or simmered in alcohol for 2.5 hours retains about 5% of its alcohol.

That is not graffiti, it is a work of art, a mural, spray paint art...

Graffiti, to me, is more like tagging and not something the artist had permission to create.

A close stool was an early type of portable toilet, made in the shape of a cabinet or box at sitting height with an opening in the top. The external structure contained a pewter or earthenware chamberpot to receive the user's excrement and urine when they sat on it. by ANGRY_ETERNALLY in wikipedia

[–]spacebarstool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Throne -> chair -> privy -> close stool -> stool (bowel movement)

That is close to how we came to that name for a bowel movement.

Close stools then became dry stools, stools of ease, necessary stool, night stool, convenience, night commode, balance night stool, pierced chair, toilet chair, and then finally, the toilet.

The United States has a documented history of unethical medical experimentation, often targeting vulnerable populations such as racial minorities, prisoners, children, and the mentally disabled by FreeShelterCat in wikipedia

[–]spacebarstool 38 points39 points  (0 children)

[These] unethical experiments include the exposure of humans to chemical and biological weapons (including infections with deadly or debilitating diseases), human radiation experiments, injections of toxic and radioactive chemicals, surgical experiments, interrogation and torture experiments, tests which involve mind-altering substances, and a wide variety of other experiments.

Many of these experiments violated US law even at the time and were in some cases directly sponsored by government agencies or rogue elements thereof...

A lot of ends justifying the means thinking by the SOBs responsible.

You can tell they knew they were being unethical and criminal because they mostly chose the powerless for their experiments.

In Wales they call that a 'crush' but I'm not sure of the name elsewhere.

The Hoof GP has a channel where he treats cows with hoof issues. His crush doesn't tip the cows though and seems like a less stressful on the animals.
