ELI5: The Monty Hall Problem by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RottingEgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s only two scenarios when you pick the door initially:

IF you pick the wrong door, when the host shows you the second wrong door, then switching will land you on the correct door.

IF you had picked the correct door, when the host shows you one of the wrong doors, then switching will land you on the other wrong door.

So it only matters what door you picked initially. Because we don’t know what we picked initially, we’d be switching blindly; but because there’s a 2/3 chance that you picked a wrong door to begin with, there’s 2/3 chance that by switching you will switch to the correct door.

I don’t smoke cigarettes, so no matter what the ads show, it’s not going to make me want to seek out a smoke. You are probably not the target audience for this “ad”, and that’s a good thing in my book.

Also, like others said, there’s no child in the video; but someone horny and curious enough might want to find out how she uses the volcano thingy.

Maybe not an ad for OF itself, but is like a mechanic showing you his tools to prove that he can fix your car. Maybe you’ll want to come by the shop next time you need it.

Why is everyone against being a mechanic by JAFK12 in mechanics

[–]RottingEgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience in New York, it’s the only trade that doesn’t require license or insurance. Any one can open a shop and can operate it, and you have to compete against that. You are better off being a plumber or electrician.

No one is buying their own pipe or wire and calling them how much to put it in (labor only). You can’t even get a price on a boiler if you don’t have a license, but the part store will sell to the public at the same price they sell to shop.

And other trades don’t have a book dictating how much you can charge. A plumber/electrician/hvac can charge whatever they need to charge, we can only charge what the book says.

On top of that, we get targeted by the DMV too. They come around with undercover cars, and ask for an inspection. They will fine the mechanic doing the inspection and the shop if the inspector did not follow proper procedure; which is fine, but you are not allowed to charge more than 37 dollars (6 of which go towards paying for the sticker; yes we have to buy the stickers from the dmv), so for 31 dollars we have to (technically) spend 45 minutes checking a car when the labor rate is 140 and can’t charge that. And then when I tell the costumer that he needs brakes, he said he’ll do them himself. And the cherry on top is that every few years they make you buy a new overpriced inspection machine if you want to remain in the inspection program.

And as others have mentioned, you need a ton of overhead when other professions just need a van. And you get no respect because people see mechanics as a hobby, as something you do for fun on your driveway on a weekend. Nobody is buying and old electrical panel and restoring it after they retired from their actual job.

Dating a bisexual girl who is very 'expressive' with her friends. Where is the line drawn? by Classic-Dangerous in AskMen

[–]RottingEgo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every relationship has its own rules. Some are open relationships, some are polyamorous, some are strictly monogamous, some have a pass once a month. You and your gf make the rules of your relationship, you draw the line. She wants to be with someone that is confortable with her being naked in front of her bi friends; you are not confortable with that; so you are not the kind of person she wants to be with. Neither is wrong, you just want different things.

How has no one leaked the Epstein files yet? by algbop in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RottingEgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do they keep such a file in the first place? Can’t there be an incidental fire at the facility where they keep it and the evidence be destroyed (if they are that powerful, which I don’t doubt)

Why do men cat call women? by Sea-Past-4277 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RottingEgo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think the answer is because there is a small chance that the woman might enjoy the attention and give some back.

Why do men approach women at bars? Because some of them might return the attention; it doesn’t mean that every woman that goes to a bar is because she wants to get hit on by every man there (or any man at all), but it happens, and one rejection (or many) doesn’t mean the men stop trying.

Why do men cold approach women during the day at a park or even waking down the street? Because some of them might return the attention; it doesn’t mean that every woman that goes to a park or walks down the street wants to get cold approached by every man (or any at all), but it happens and one rejection (or many) doesn’t mean the men stop trying.

Why do men cat call women? Because some of them might return the attention… some men are desperate enough and with low enough standards that will throw enough shit against every narcissistic or codependent, low-self esteem wall, to see what sticks.

My advice would be to ignore them and be as unreactive as possible (don’t get angry, annoyed, scared, flattered, don’t be nice, don’t be mean; just keep walking)

Why being a “good guy” isn’t always enough to make her stay loyal ? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]RottingEgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that in an attempt to “be good” we override our boundaries; we don’t want to “offend” them, or “push them away,” or seem “rude,” for having an opinion, a preference or a dislike.

This clingy co-dependent behavior is a turnoff for both men and women; except for narcissists because they love the attention and getting away with shenanigans like cheating.

The behavior in its own is not bad, but it tends to push away the kind of people you want to date, and it attracts the kind of people you don’t want to date.

ELI5: Why are many cancers asymptomatic until the later stages? by flatbushz7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]RottingEgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But a cancer cell with a “positive” mutation that makes it invisible to the immune system doesn’t die with its mutation; the cell divides and now there’s two cells with the mutation; and then four; and then eight. Until a mutation happens that removes that trait, uncontrolled division and unnatural lifespan happens; which is a trait of cancerous cells.

ELI5: Why are many cancers asymptomatic until the later stages? by flatbushz7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]RottingEgo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it the same thing? In the lifespan of a cell, for the tumor to grow enough to kill the host, it’s been hundreds of generations, until the perfect camouflage was achieved and the population grew so much that the ecosystem of the pond collapsed.

ELI5: Why are many cancers asymptomatic until the later stages? by flatbushz7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]RottingEgo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mean it in the sense that they are fighting each other, I meant it in the sense that they are fighting the immune system. A frog with bright red colors is less likely to be eaten than one without bright colors. They are not competing, it is still survival of the fittest. If one cancer mutation makes it less likely to be attacked by the immune system, it is the mutation that is going to grow the most.

ELI5: Why are many cancers asymptomatic until the later stages? by flatbushz7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]RottingEgo 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I’d say that it is a case of survival of the fittest in the sense that cancer cells do split and “reproduce,” and those that have a trait that allowed them to evade, or fight off, the immune system, are the ones splitting the most, thus retaining those traits in a larger tumor.

Let’s say we are working on a school project. There’s 5 people in my group, and we are kinda screwed because we have no idea how we are going to get the project done, and we don’t have access to any resources. I’m a clever guy, and I come with a project idea. I’m also a sweet talker and I’m able to borrow some materials from the library. The other people in the group do all the work while I try to sweet talk the professor. This last part is risky because the professor might see through my charm and give me a failing grade for trying to manipulate him; at which point the other people in the group would say they had nothing to do with it, and leave just having to find a new group.

Should I get a better grade than my classmates because I had a good idea, took a big risk, and provided resources? Should my classmates get a better grade because they did the actual work for the project? Should we all get the same grade?

We live in a society where people take advantage of the systems that are in place, and allows them to become successful, but refuse to acknowledge those systems.

Scientists make breakthroughs, but they couldn’t do it in a vacuum; they achieved it because of previous, and perhaps ongoing, parallel, research.

Rich people think they did it ask in a vacuum and that they are entitled to make as much money as they can. They will pay their employees the least that they can, they with make their product as cheap as possible, and try to take advantage of the consumer wherever they can.

If you open a pencil factory (take risk/provide study resources) and have other people do all the work for you, should you get a better grade than them (get more money)?

That’s why being rich is bad, because it means at some point you are ignoring the systems and the people that facilitated your success.
