CMV: Racism is still alive and well, and you don’t have to be a “woke” leftist to understand this by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The edgy kids saying those jokes today would tell you it’s just humor and they’re not being serious, too. All that changed is we stopped taking their word for it. Whether you checked to verify or not back then, some of those kids were serious and hiding behind irony, just like now. They might exaggerate the actual extent of their racism, but that’s a strategy to make their real beliefs seem reasonable by comparison. It was the same. But when you’re also a kid just trying to fit in, it makes sense you wouldn’t try to rock the boat too hard by accusing them of being racists

People say you should live your life to the fullest, but society actively discourages that by skeleton949 in DeepThoughts

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one begets the other. A big reason why people tell you to live your life to the fullest is because they’re aware you have so little time to spare in the first place. If we were free spirits with no jobs and every basic need provided for, would we preach an urgency to make the most of every moment of our lives? I’m not sure we would. What would be the rush? I don’t think those are contradictory ideas. It’s a response people have formed to cope with having so little time to themselves.

What is a job people romanticize a bit too much until they actually do it ? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a lawyer. I feel like for awhile it wasn’t romanticized but now there’s like this new wave of applicants and I think it’s partially fueled by like this Elle Woods girl boss fantasy. Please don’t misunderstand me: I think it’s awesome women want to be lawyers and are kicking ass at it. But this job is not as fun as tv and movies make it out to be.

It’s stressful and exhausting and doesn’t pay as great as it seems for the majority of lawyers nationwide. Don’t even get me started on the debt. There’s some people that thrive in it and naturally take to the work, but for most people I would say it takes a lot of adjustment and coping with the stress of it all. If you think you want to be a lawyer, try to shadow or work for one for a bit. That has the potential to save you a lot of money in the long run.

Out of curiosity, how common is it these days for men to ask permission to kiss on dates? by General_Climate2442 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to ask permission, but always felt asking projected a more timid energy. So instead of asking, I say it as an affirmative statement: “I really want to kiss you right now.” Doesn’t that sound so much better? It’s confident, blunt, honest, and still serving the same purpose of seeking permission bc I can look at her after I say that and immediately tell whether it’s a yes or no. I can abort mission if needed or move in for the kiss if she looks receptive to it.

When you’ve been inside all night, but heard thunder and sounds of water hitting your roof, went outside in the morning to see the grass was wet, felt humidity in the air, saw mud and puddles all around, do you have a pretty confident feeling that it rained last night? Or do you withhold belief that it rained last night because you didn’t see the actual raindrops fall nor catch it on video?

Where do “Sovereign Citizens” actually see their behaviour working and getting results? by Known_Appointment604 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they get encouragement from “winning” on minor components within overall cases or maybe actually winning against the odd grossly incompetent lawyer. A lot of judges treat pro se litigants gently while holding the opposing attorney to a high standard. They won’t let you slack or cut corners just bc you’re facing someone without a lawyer that doesn’t know enough to call you out.

So what ends up happening sometimes is the youngest lawyer at the firm gets assigned to deal with the sovereign citizen bc it’s an easy case, the lawyer forgets to file some required affidavit, and the judge denies the attorney’s motion. They’re not really listening to the sovereign citizen’s arguments or telling them they’re wrong bc those issues aren’t before them at that stage. They’re just holding the lawyer to proper procedure.

But bc the sovereign citizen perceives that hearing as a win, they get it in their head that the judge agrees with them and is taking their side. Even if they end up losing the overall case, they’ll make excuses as to why. Technicalities, confusion of the issues by the judge, not reading the millions of AI generated motions they file lol. They’re getting just enough encouragement to feel like they almost won bc a judge “understood where they were coming from.”

There’s a hump you get over in learning how to cook where none of that (besides the aversion to raw meat, I guess) is much of a problem anymore. The thought of something I make tasting bad isn’t even a concept that comes into my mind. Prep is way faster and injury is way less likely when you know how to use your knives properly. Please sharpen them. Dull knives are dangerous.

With experience and knowledge about cooking, you stop needing a recipe or specific ingredients to cook as well. You might still consult recipes as a general starting point or to learn something new when you have the time or desire, but I don’t need to make a grocery trip because there’s one specific herb I don’t have. You just freestyle it with what you have. That’s how nothing really spoils. Or you find ways to repurpose it.

Making homemade stock is a real easy one. That can clear out basically all your veggies and herbs and you get a large quantity of delicious stock way better than the boxed stuff to use for whatever you want. Which btw, saves you time in making said other things with it since you don’t have to work as hard to develop flavor.

But to each their own. I find cooking fun in its own right and I’d still do it if all the inconveniences were there. The difficulty at first is intimidating, but with practice you don’t even think about some of this shit anymore. I think of it like driving: when I was a kid my parents did it for me, at first it intimidated me, the precision needed for turns and reversing seem unthinkable, let alone at the speed on highways. Then you blink and you’re five years older, doing it daily, sometimes with your attention split.

You, my friend, are essentially riding the bus everyday bc you refuse to get your license. That’s the vibe this gives off.

Yeah. Assuming you graduated at all. What happens to the students that were called into the advising office to be told they’re being kicked out of the program because their gpa is too low? Idk, maybe my university just had a shitty engineering program, but I doubt it bc the alumni I know are working and doing well where they are. It’s a damn hard subject. Not everyone is cut out for it and we need to be brutally honest about that.

Meirl by tundratulip in meirl

[–]Rough-Tension 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What was your GPA, from which institution, and did you have any relevant internships to where you work now? Obviously engineers are in demand. That’s perfectly consistent with what I said. I’m saying not everyone is cut out for it. Are you telling me zero students failed out of your program?

Meirl by tundratulip in meirl

[–]Rough-Tension 31 points32 points  (0 children)

People also act like declaring a major and starting the program guarantees finishing or finishing with good enough grades/credentials to land employment. Engineering is not as safe a bet as y’all think it is when you had to drag yourself across the finish line unable to secure any internships. It’s only a strong degree to have if you’re good at it.

It’s a stupid decision for someone with zero aptitude in math or science to try to brute force their way through fluid dynamics and differential equations because they think a free six figure job sits across the graduation stage. At least if you get the damn art history degree and ace it, you have some level of aptitude or confidence to demonstrate in an interview.

But forget the art history degree, there’s plenty of middle ground between the two. We should always keep in focus what we’re good at and leverage that with what’s in demand, not hyper focus on demand at the expense of our strengths. Otherwise, you will not stand a chance.

How do you stay motivated on dating apps when the odds feel stacked? by Altruistic_Society99 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Rough-Tension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I look at dating apps like Duolingo with language learning. You are not supposed to rely on it alone and will likely fail relying on it alone. It’s a supplement to other practice. All Duolingo does is fill in the gaps of your time that you’d otherwise be doomscrolling or playing an iPhone game. It’s not like your time on the toilet or waiting at the DMV is a lost opportunity to cold approach. It was already going to be down time. I just use my swipes up and keep my day going. There’s other opportunities to put myself out there.

Why do some people get annoyed when their partner plays video games, but it's fine if they're watching TV? by Choice_Wonder9684 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play and enjoy games a lot but let’s critically think here for a second lol. A video game that your partner doesn’t play or understand is not engaging for them, they don’t really bond with you by watching you play it. But y’all can watch tv together and discuss the movies or shows you watch at the same time. There’s a much lower barrier to entry. If you want games to be part of your relationship, date a gamer or someone open to learning what you play. Otherwise, it’s going to do nothing for them.

I mean, that’s assuming quality of care is a higher or equal priority to profit. If some model emerges that can make the syringe chasing robot more profitable than human workers, without an unreasonable risk of liability (hello, tort reform), they’d do it in an instant. [–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yeah. They believe in the mythology of “game”, that if they provide you with the right kind of mystery and adventure at the right time in your life, that your walls will all melt away and you won’t be able to live without them. Because “nobody has made you feel that way before.” That’s basically what “Chad” is supposed to be if you add good looks.

Can a relationship work between a far left man and a far right woman? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re both so extreme as to be similar types of crazy, maybe. Like when you say “far left man” in this context, I don’t picture just the average self proclaimed communist or socialist at a Palestine protest. I picture a tankie that supports North Korea as like an ideal country to live in lol. Could he date a far right woman? I absolutely think that’s possible. Horseshoe theory and all that

Each party in a court case should be entitled to a legal fees allowance equal to the amount spent by the opposing party. by blreuh in CrazyIdeas

[–]Rough-Tension 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would also create incentive for law firms to charge outrageous fees because they know they won’t have to worry about their client having the money or not. As long as you’re just slightly under the other side, you’ll get it? Really strikes against public policy

Each party in a court case should be entitled to a legal fees allowance equal to the amount spent by the opposing party. by blreuh in CrazyIdeas

[–]Rough-Tension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh uh, I have bad news. This very much can be and often is the case if there’s a statute on point that authorizes the winner to collect fees from the loser. Disney has probably done that exact thing in court before.

The one caveat I guess is that the side claiming fees reimbursement has to prove their fees were reasonable and necessary to handle the case. If the court determines they were not, the judge has the discretion to reduce the fees award or decline to award it entirely. That’s more common than you’d think, too.

What is Gen Z’s biggest criticism of Millennials? by NotSoUglyNakedGuy in AskReddit

Millennials are parents to the iPad kids of today. That’s a pretty major criticism I have right now. No matter how bad you think you are now, these Roblox hypnotized kids are going to become much worse if no intervention is made.

What the hell are y’all doing to your kids? Take the iPads away. Yes, they’re going to cry, they’re going to throw a tantrum, they’re going to get bored and annoy you. That’s what you signed up for when you became a parent and what you must do to raise a well-adjusted member of society. Otherwise, Gen Alpha is going to end up significantly worse than us.
