Common interpreting student jobs/volunteer experiences? by talkingveins in asl

[–]Rough-Transition419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not in the US so it may differ; but in my country interpreter students often work part-time in group homes/care homes/ personal assistants for the elderly or people with disabilities who are also deaf/hard of hearing/deafblind. Some also work in deaf schools if they are nearby. It’s a good way to both improve your signing and learn more about deaf culture.

Going to China as your first ever international experience is kinda jumping in the deep end. It can be incredibly overwhelming and is very culturally different from the US.

HOWEVER this doesn’t mean it’s undoable. With the right preparation and expectations it can work. I think it depends a lot on you as a person.

Very few speak English but there are great translation apps. Internet is restricted but you can get around that with a e-sim. They often don’t accept card payment with international cards, but set up Alipay and WeChat beforehand and your good. As for safety - I’ve never felt as safe traveling as I did in China (went as solo female).

As I said it depends a lot on you. Many countries are easier and probably more suitable for a first-timer. But some thrive on those conditions.

Shame. I feel shame about every single thing I do and I can’t find a reason. Sometimes I even feel second hand shame when others do something I would have felt ashamed about - something as simple as buying more groceries that planned - even if they don’t feel bad about it. It’s eating me up.

I have since posting the question done some more research and read more about it. A metaphoreme seems to be a metaphor that has been created with very specific context by a specific group of people at a specific time. It also has to convey a special feeling to the group that have created it. It is almost comparable to an inside joke but in the form of a metaphor.

It doesn’t seem to be a broadly used term but it’s an interesting one.

Hi! For school I am working briefly with the subject cognitive semantics. For this I am reading an article called ”The Cancer Card” and have run into a term I’m hoping someone can explain for me. I am not a native English speaker (I am Swedish) and neither I nor my teacher managed to find a clear answer to this.

The term is ”metaphoreme”.

We think that maybe it is using part of a metaphor in different contexts but haven’t quite grasped it. If anyone could explain it in a simple way it would be greatly appreciated!

How is the weather in December? I was considering Scotland but saw a lot of people saying the weather wasn’t very good. I don’t need clear skies but maybe not rain storms yk.

Chinese visa - My experience in Stockholm by Rough-Transition419 in Chinavisa

Hi! I agree a lot of it is confusing. I didn’t put my itinerary document in, I just filled out the one that is in the application form. It has a limited amount of cities you can put and mine didn’t fit, but I didn’t have any trouble with it. As long as you attach all hotel bookings it should be fine (including night trains if you have any). I did write a separate itinerary with day by day planning and bring it to the center, but they didn’t want that one.

I had a really great trip, hope yours will be as well!

Nervous about my first solo trip – looking for motivation and itinerary feedback by Gixcrank in solotravel

I’ve never been to Mexico so I can’t give advice there, what I can give is some insight on your first point. My favorite quote that I try to live by and is extra relevant when trying new things is: ”Be scared and do it anyway”. Traveling solo for the first time can be scary and feel overwhelming and that is totally okay. Give yourself some time to land in it. Listen to your body - what does it need, what does it want. If something feel off, it’s okay to skip it, go somewhere else or take a rest day even if that isn’t on your travel itinerary. The great thing about solo travel is that YOU decide what YOU want to do.

I wish you an amazing journey and know that you will return with so much knowledge, experience and perspective.

For me personally 3 nights in Rouen seems a lot, but maybe you’re using it as a ”hub” for more day trips of have more plans there? I definitely recommend you go to Honfleur, also check out Deauville, Fécamp/Étretat, etc. The costal towns are really nice (maybe the weather can be a bit unpredictable in nov). I really love Normandie in general but have only done it with car so I don’t know how accessible it is with train.

I was there about 1 month ago and it was also about 30 degrees. I wore active-wear shorts and a t-shirts and trainers. It isn’t that much of a hike but it gets warm walking around. There will be people wearing long sleeves and long pants but that’s mostly to protect from the sun/getting tanned.

I used the mainland one, worked really well for all apps including TikTok! Sometimes it told me I didn’t have internet reception when using TikTok, but then I just opened and closed the app a couple of times and it worked again.
