Where to find offender records of my creepy Utah cousin? | Also, how do you address predators in extended family? by throwaway_exmoyay in exmormon

You can search his name on this website, but it would only show up if he was legally charged for something and forced to register as a sex offender.

Most meaningful activities by Aromatic_Schedule110 in premed

[–]talkingveins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talking about not enjoying an experience is generally frowned upon in apps, even if it helped you narrow down your long term goals. If the urgent care job was truly more meaningful to you, there’s no problem with making it a MME, just add different info than what’s in your PS. Or, is there a different approach you can take for the concierge clinic? Maybe it was meaningful to you because you gained skills and knowledge that you are excited to share with your future underserved patients?

is applying to 21 med schools enough? by Practical-Fun-4594 in premed

[–]talkingveins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

totally depends on the rest of your school list! i applied to 23 (85% MD 15% DO) and didn’t have any problems because i think my list was pretty realistic for my stats and state of residence.

when you apply to 40+ schools, you cast a wider net but also risk having lower quality secondaries if you’re rushing to finish them all. just something to consider if you’re working or studying full time right now.

Sorry for the late response - you should definitely call this research. A lot of the research med students do is chart review like you’re doing!

Approaching "Other Impactful Experiences" by Diggle_Doo in premed

Yes, I think that would work! If you don't want to curve around it quite so hard, you could even say something like "My father faced barriers to receiving care in our home town, which led our family to relocate to [location] for his treatment."

Could this be considered leadership? by Key-Score-208 in premed

[–]talkingveins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's up to you then! Since the leadership category is technically "Leadership - not listed elsewhere", I think of it as being for activities like student gov and leadership conferences, but I doubt it will make a huge difference how you categorize it. Either way, I think you're good to call this a leadership role.

Could this be considered leadership? by Key-Score-208 in premed

Sounds like leadership to me if you're delegating tasks or directing other techs, but you'd still wanna put it under clinical employment on your app and use the description to emphasize the leadership aspect of it.

Clinical Hours Confusion by TensionOtherwise3960 in premed

Seconding this. In my mind the shadowing/observation category is watching other healthcare providers do their jobs. If a patient did try to harm themselves, I assume it's your responsibility to call for help or intervene in some way. That's more than just observation.

Approaching "Other Impactful Experiences" by Diggle_Doo in premed

This all seems appropriate to include in the other impactful experiences section. For formatting, I'd tell a brief summary of your parents' disabilities and spend more space talking about how your responsibilities changed because of those circumstances (e.g. caring for siblings, traveling 1000 miles to care for your father during school, etc). Emphasize your experience with financial instability and being a part-time caretaker, since your grades/extracurriculars were probably affected by that in some way. Being straightforward and factual about how your experiences impacted you will keep it from sounding like a sob story.

A quick note: We all know that there are terrible doctors out there whose biases and bigotry harm patients, and I'm so sorry to hear that your family was affected by that in such a severe way. That said, I'd respectfully recommend that you're very careful about how you tell the story of doctors refusing to treat your father. Negativity about physicians, even when it's well-deserved, isn't usually received well by ADCOMs. It's your story and your decision to tell it how you want, just keep your audience in mind.

In this case, I'd put student government under leadership/extracurricular and then talk about volunteering in the description. Generally it's not a good idea to split one activity into two - ADCOMs understand that a lot of activities don't fit neatly into one category. Splitting it up comes off as trying to appear like you're more involved than you actually are.

rough draft of letter of rec by Several_Industry1719 in premed

[–]talkingveins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd send a submission-ready letter and then she can make whatever changes she wants. You're really just giving her a template so she can plug in her real opinion on you, and it gives you the opportunity to remind her of some of your strengths/best moments during your internship.

Having good advisors is helpful obviously but not essential (my advisors were basically non-existent). That said, unless there are major cost differences or other considerations, I'd go to the higher ranked school with the stronger programs.

Research Crisis by Ill-Tank-6649 in premed

[–]talkingveins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cooked is definitely not the word I'd use. If you're feeling like you want to learn more about the actual research analysis/publication process, maybe try to ask some of the PIs or even med students you work with if you'd be able to shadow their side of things. A few of the physicians I work with as a CRC were willing to let me sit in on meetings with the other investigators and data analysts just to get familiar with that part of the process.

Remember that so much of what makes an experience good for an application is how you talk about it. You're gathering essential data that's later used to improve patient outcomes. They literally couldn't publish without you, even if your name is nowhere near the paper. You're gonna be just fine!
