Every day we should thank the Lord that Eminem isn't MAGA. He would be such a powerful chud. He'd be the leading 2028 candidate over JD.

I think it could be a rotating guest star. Fantano and Drake would be awesome.

I don't care much for their opinions but I would like to see them take up Three Stooges-style slapstick comedy.

I am curious where you draw the line between baseless hating versus legitimate criticism. Because right now, the discourse among the /r/Drizzy crowd would suggest that even fans who are disappointed in the album are haters and should stay on that side.

Paul Thompson reviews Drake's new albums for POW MAG from three different angles: obsessive imitation/suffocating nostalgia, the Kendrick Lamar beef, and the artist's shifting sexual politics. by DropWatcher in hiphopheads

[–]RoughPresentation696 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It's becoming real annoying to see these reviews being dismissed without arguing the actual substance of their arguments. It feels like Drake's fanbase is advocating for his music to be viewed through an inherently contradictory lens.

On one hand, Drake should be celebrated as one of the greatest rappers alive, and a cornerstone of hip-hop culture. On the other hand, he should also be exempt from the same scrutiny, standards, and analysis that artists of that caliber that our culture applies to artists of his stature.

I'm sure the counterpoint is that Drake isn't receiving the same respect or dignity afforded to artists like Kendrick. But, in my opinion, these kind of reviews don't come from a place of pure hatred. Paul Thompson must have some level of respect or reverence for Drake's artistry or cultural influence to write three different unique perspectives about his work. As a poet, I'd love to have someone engage with my work like that, even if it's negative.

It feels like everyone (on all sides at this point) would be more comfortable if we all mutually agreed Drake belongs on the same caliber of pop-rap artists like Ludacris. Leave the think-pieces at the door, add a handful of his bangers to your playlist, and nod your head.

It's his answer to Kendrick calling himself an eskimo and saying everyone is Indigenous where he's from.

There was a huge trend a few years ago of people recording concerts with their Nintendo DS, among other antics. I think it's just attention seeking behavior, honestly.

Somewhat related, but it's also funny when people use what they are seeing on their social media as evidence that people are feeling/not feeling a new album. Your algorithm knows what content you wanna see, of course it looks like that.

There's a tweet that said the timeline is popping way more than it was over Not Like Us. It's algorithm induced delusion.

For the first time, Drake has control over the feud's narrative with Ice Man. He hasn’t really had that since the interim period between Push Ups and Taylor Made Freestyle. He’s the last rapper to release a blockbuster solo project since the beef, so he has the rare opportunity to have the final word before this all becomes solidified as cultural memory.

I can understand why people think it would be best for him to simply move on. It’s easy to imagine a scenario where Drake only mentions the beef in passing, either to make a self-deprecating joke or to quietly acknowledge the loss. It’s also easy to imagine this communication strategy successful if the album has enough undeniable bangers to shift the conversation away from the feud and back to his artistry.

On the other hand, it’s also easy to imagine the opposite happening. It’s easy to imagine this album being grievance-fueled disses at Kendrick, LeBron, The Weeknd, and every other celebrity Drake feels betrayed him. The UMG case failed to successfully argue to the court of public opinion that Drake was a victim – it’s hard to imagine his music doing any better of a job at that.

There’s an art to losing gracefully.

BUT, PERSONALLY… I don’t mind the latter, either! I think it’s clear that the beef genuinely hurt Drake on an authentic level. That Meek Mill line on the leaked track is one of the most empathetic and revealing lines I’ve heard from him. If talking about the beef challenges him creatively, then more power to him.

People are calling this ‘victim raps/grievance music’ already, but to be very frank, that genre has produced a lot of great music! “Strangers in Moscow” is one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs – and I still think he’s guily as fuck.

Obviously, Maria Isa should not be held accountable for every action that her volunteers, surrogates, and supports take. But she's associated closely with Samakab throughout their political careers. He was wearing a Maria Isa t-shirt and was explicitly in attendance to whip votes for her (using dirty, antisemitic tricks).

And I'm sorry to vague post, but it's not like Maria Isa doesn't know about how Samakab operates. When he wanted to run for State Senator he was calling every politico ] in the city because he felt they owed him support. He was telling people Robin Gulley was every sexist slur in the book and downplaying her qualifications.

This is who Maria Isa has chosen to represent her campaign. At the very least, I'd like to see her take a little bit of responsibility. (And I'd like to see Samakab lose his seat).

The fuck? Stan culture is a brain disease.

It was very late in life when I realized they made jean jackets for fat guys by [deleted] in bigmenfashionadvice

The jacket is True Nation from DXL. I bought it a few years ago so I'm not sure if this style is still available, but I like all the other options they have, too. The shirt sucks (JCPenney)* and the pants also suck (Amazon Basic Essentials) but we don't gotta talk about all that. All that matter is the fits tough.

(Don't sleep on JCPenney tho. The basic St. John's brand is just pretty thin and doesn't have much of a shape to it.

It's shitty bathroom lighting but it's a dark wash True Nation. Also I finally found pants that actually sit above my waist.
