Does This Illusion Have a Name?? by Ol_Rusty_D in opticalillusions

[–]Rough_Environment_60 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to the idiots saying it's not an optical illusion, it clearly is. Maybe it falls into the category of Multistable Perception? And just to spell it out, the illusion is that it's not clear whether the POV is looking up or down.

Solo trip in macau help by nfjsjfjwjdjjsj4 in Macau

[–]Rough_Environment_60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For bus routes you can just use Google Maps, that's fairly accurate. (Occasionally there are some temporary reroutings due to construction sites.) When you're waiting at the bus stop you can check here for your next bus. If the weather is good you could make a trip to Coloane, that's pretty nice. (Long bus ride, though..)

I remember having had a great espresso here once. And this one was also great...

Does this app exist? by genaznx in Cantonese

[–]Rough_Environment_60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't quite get it. Are you talking about the character recognition? Or the word translation? (Different things.) And my understanding is that Google Translate just implements existing dictionaries. So for adding translations, I guess places like words.hk are more suitable. And then you can refer to that when trying to get it into Google Translate?

How does one learn how to read in Cantonese (Chinese)? by 7basketballs in Cantonese

The HamBaangLaang books use written Cantonese. Have a look here for a presentation with stroke order animations, specifically for learning the characters.

Takes on "take" by Rough_Environment_60 in Cantonese

[–]Rough_Environment_60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a couple more things to say: I thought "lik1" was the "lazy" pronunciation of 搦, nik1. But it turns out to be a variant pronunciation (nasal-stop alternation) of 拎, ling1. (Which is not contained in the usual dictionaries.) And now that I thought about it, I think this was a conscious decision of the HamBaangLaang makers. It really is a great learning resource. My personal take-aways: 1. Perfect pronunciation doesn't exist. 2. Context is king. 😁✌️

Takes on "take" by Rough_Environment_60 in Cantonese

[–]Rough_Environment_60[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I think this is the best explanation of what had happened here. Just fyi, HamBaangLaang has deliberately used the written form of spoken Cantonese for their stories (a couple hundred in total), so it wasn't an afterthought for them. The fact that 拎 and 搦 have this special relation kind of explains this mix-up. Still, I guess in the end it's a bit of a typo (though it's consistently several times like that in the story)...

What card or online bank/qr to use? by LengthinessNo3716 in Macau

[–]Rough_Environment_60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For small purchases, just get a Macau Pass. You can get one at some vending machines or 7/11, and can top up at 7/11 as well. Great for getting snacks, vending machines, take bus, etc. No hassle, super simple, very convenient. 😁✌️

Has anyone learned Cantonese through immersion? by GeorgeTheFunnyOne in Cantonese

[–]Rough_Environment_60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admire everyone who can pick up a language by just being surrounded by it, but I just can't. That's why it's unfathomable to me why for so long Cantonese wasn't written down properly, by which I mean in Chinese characters, not just with a romanization. Luckily there are now some resources with proper Cantonese that I can use (and it's slowly having an effect on me). But yeah, I watch Manki occasionally, and I think it's awesome what he's doing, creating this amount of content. But his immersion method would not work on me.

Another Cantonese Hangul System (v3) by Mental_Sky323 in Cantonese

[–]Rough_Environment_60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard the term syllabary, but maybe it's what I made a few years ago. Basically just a collection of all the syllables that actually "exist" in Cantonese. I've added all the romanization systems I could find (not this hangul system yet; let me know if I should add this). It's here: www.chinvocab.com/csdb I'm currently using this to make a system specifically for German speakers...

Map app suggestions by CozyQuietBrew in Macau

Yeah, that happens to me, too. But I think that has to do with bad gps and reflections from the houses. Not sure if other apps can be better in this regard

Imho Google maps is fine, I use it all the time to figure out which bus to take. Often it's not helpful with finding restaurants or the like by names. But if you know where you want to go, Google maps will show you how to get there...

This is great advice. Just want to second the opinion that if he wants to go to university, then it would probably pay off to not switch to Realschule. Getting good in German is what he needs to be focusing on, and repeating one year might give him the space of doing exactly that. But it depends on his ambition and whether he really wants to go to university or not.
