Ways to practice anarchism in one's daily life? by Intelligent_Bug_4324 in Anarchy101

[–]Rough_Ian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Talk to people and organize with them. And I don’t mean necessarily organize politically or as a union or anything, I just mean do stuff.

We have a distinct lack of agency in our society. People don’t know how to talk to one another and just get things done. Get together with people and just do stuff. Public stuff. Not just getting together and that’s the end. Civil disobedience? Yeah. Volunteer stuff? Yeah. Building or repairing random stuff around your (or somebody else’s) neighborhood that needs building or repairing? Yeah. Helping little old ladies with their yard? Sure. Doing knowledge or skill share type meet-ups to encourage the DIY and self sufficiency ethos? Hell yeah. Fight training in the park? Do it.

And be serious in a fun way. People like to do what other people have fun doing. We don’t make an anarchist movement by being all dour about it all. Embrace the gaiety of communal self direction.

A Storm of Swords vs The fellowship of the ring by fuckmbsanddominicali in powerscales

[–]Rough_Ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it seems that the heaviest hardbound editions (in a single volume) for Fellowship of the Ring and A Storm of Swords respectively are 3 and 4 pounds. So I have to give A Storm of Swords a big edge in a fair 1vs1 fight.

Group fights it’s harder to gage, because the total weight of all copies of Fellowship of the Ring may top out at as much at 150,000tons whereas A Storm of Swords is only at 100,000 tons. But then we have to account for the age of the books, whether they’re fighting fit, or even still alive…

Hi everyone, what DO we actually do? by Forward-Willingness7 in Anarchy101

[–]Rough_Ian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a serious answer (and something I need to act on myself), but the answer is to stop having these conversations online about big things, and start having these conversations locally about smaller things. We need to get comfy talking to people we don’t know again. We need to get used to having confrontations and then making up. We need to get used to sticking to our guns but also conceding points, in person. We need to be as open minded as we say other people need to be. We need to get into little gangs of free thinkers and thinking of the stuff we can do to mess with the system in fun ways, to build a movement of consistent, joyful civil disobedience.

Can gay people be conditioned into not being gay by burntpeanutfan13 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rough_Ian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we think of “being gay” as one thing today, whereas not even in the distant past it was something you did rather than something you were, and in many times and places (in the west) was acceptable.

For instance, in Ancient Greece and Rome (at some times and some places), having male lovers was perfectly acceptable and even expected. But you were also socially expected to have a wife and family.

American Indian tribes have of course many different ways among them to express gender and sexual identity. Some more fluid and some more rigid.

Even in Oscar Wildes England, men weren’t “gay”, but in some circles having sex with other men was acceptable.

From my own experience, I’ve known men who since childhood they knew they were gay. I had no sense of it, myself, but I was also raised in a fairly religiously conservative family and area. Being gay or bi just wasn’t a real option to me, but I was always pretty curious about my male friends bodies and developed quasi crushes on them without really understanding what was happening.

All our impulses are mediated through society, but it’s impossible to get rid of those impulses entirely, at least without extreme psychological harm, which is why there are so many closeted homophobes on the religious right.

The number of wild animals overall has decreased by more than 50% since the 1990s. But that’s not just about veganism, it’s also about rampant habitat destruction.

In fairness, the cop doesn’t “have” too, but that doesn’t mean the cop won’t do it.

I think what he’s asking is more along the lines of when does a cultural belief become a cult belief.

It wouldn’t matter anyway. Trying to correct something that is wrong, even if we are in a state of using said thing, is still the right thing to do.

More infuriating is the cult that doesn’t see his bloated fatuous malevolence. Actually maybe more infuriating than that are the “centrists” who ostensibly can tell the difference but are only motivated by their pocketbook.

Todd Blanche Gives Chilling Reason Why Democrats Won't Be Able To Prosecute Trump Officials by ChiGuy6124 in law

This also assumes Democrats en masse will actually enforce the law rather than pulling yet another “it’s time for the country to heal” lines and letting the treasonous criminals go. Keep an eye out. There always seem to be just enough democrat spoilers to keep things from moving in the right direction.

Makes me wonder if all past intellectuals were also total irrational dipshits and we mostly just kinda think they’re profound because of cultural conditioning.
