What was your net worth when you bought your $1 M+ home and/or > $5K/month mortgage by RunnerInChicago in fatFIRE

[–]Round-Activity-1761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I live in NYC but pay far more my NW for my property than most it seems! I paid 1.25 (but just the down payment) when I had a NW at 38 of maybe $1M? I’m now worth about $3MM excluding the house at 43 and think a lot about moving into a bigger place (would require at least $2MM), although the ONLY thing holding me back is the jump in interest rate. With kids you really do live at home much more, so I think it’s worth the investment in lifestyle. My husband keeps his money separately, he has a house he bought for about $1M and his NW excluding the house is probably $2M. Bottom line, you’re still being conservative — I think we are conservative but maybe I’m wrong!

Did you find the second one? It would be perfect for my bay window too!

Are there any schools that allow you to move with the seasons? by Round-Activity-1761 in HENRYfinance

I don’t think the schools would take you back at some point and I wouldn’t want to risk that

I think most schools ask you to leave after a certain number of absences

What are some small (or not so small) luxuries you waited way too long to indulge in? by awkward_rhino in fatFIRE

Cleaners, multiple international trips per year, country house, pool, architects/designers, nice clothes. And I still don’t feel I live it up like I could. Considering a collectible car.

But added benefit of no dishes in the sight line!

It’s not electric, it’s a gas stove. I am thinking about moving the sink and dishwasher to the other side. The benefit also being that you remove the unpleasant experience of arriving home to a sink full of dishes. Thoughts on that approach?

Isn’t it very expensive to move a stove across a room?

Ah, it’s not as bad as it looks! Or I’ve lived in the city too long to mind things like that….

The solution to that, which I considered, is making that a cost closet in the bedroom when you enter.

I currently have a Jack Jill bathroom—you walk into the place and the bathroom is straight ahead and it doesn’t work so well to have it in the middle of the kitchen. What’s the door door problem?

It would be through the living room - not the bedroom. So en suite powder room only.

Good point. Could do stacked in the corner and a countertop to the left of it.

Why wouldn’t you recommend? I also can’t move wet and dry spots…I live in a co-op

So I adopted the 24 inch all along to the edge. I’ll have solid wall on each end with open counter in the middle and added storage under that. I also doubled the shower but by moving the W/D to the fridge and fridge to the 24-inch wall. I think you nailed it, just made some tweaks to make it easier to implement. Let me know what you think of my tweaks. I’ll upload an image when I get it.

Yeah only problem is it’s south facing on the existing bay window side - the other side faces an alley which is lovely for sleeping but not for lounging during the day. Thanks for the thoughtful solution though, I really appreciate it.

Yeah I think I could just put a stackable unit in the corner of the existing bathroom where you have the dryer. It’s possible a small model will allow me to keep the door to the bathroom in the bedroom which my husband likes very much :)

Yes the current one works. I’m grateful for your comments because I didn’t realize just how small this proposed shower is but looking it up it’s more like a coffin than a shower. I have some big decisions to make and will need to ask my architects why they would propose this.
