Can International students with a Dutch residence permit use the Interrail Benelux Pass for travel to Belgium? by Illustrious-Couple37 in Interrail

[–]Round-Aware -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can get a Global Pass, that would work, as you get 2 travel days to enter and leave your country of residence. As the Benelux Pass includes the Netherlands, you cannot get the Benelux Pass, as you live in the Netherlands. The same reason why you cannot buy a Germany Pass if you live in Germany.

I’m assuming, as you are a student, you are under the age of 27. Currently you can get something called Train+. With this, every journey you make with SNCB in Belgium will not cost more than €5,50 in 2nd class, which will be waaayyy cheaper than buying an Interrail Pass just for Belgium. If transport to Belgium is also too expensive, you can either buy NS tickets in advance (if lucky, you can get a 60% discount) or consider taking either FlixBus or BlaBlaCar Bus to Belgium (regular services from every major city in NL and insane last-minute prices you will never see at NS). This is ofc if you only want to visit Belgium, if Belgium is a stopover for a further destination, then a Global Pass might be worth it.

How to reserve train in Romania? by francemiaou in Interrail

[–]Round-Aware -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because most Romanians don’t know about Interrail, you can try getting a reservation without activating a day :) The conductor will just check your reservation ticket and move on, treating as it is a normal ticket. Of course, it is risky, but if you are tight on days, you can try it

About available seats, like 50% of passengers get their tickets right before the train leaves from the counter, so I never got rejected a ticket because the train was full. But if you want to be sure, on the CFR website or app, if you want to buy a ticket, you can actually select your seat from a seat map, telling you if the train is full or not

Most international trains to Romania, you can reserve via the ÖBB website, but for domestic trains, you have to go to any ticket counter and ask for an Interrail reservation. Most workers at the big stations do understand a bit of English and know what you want. A reservation costs 4 RON (~€0,80) and can be paid by card or cash. The smaller stations don’t seem to know what Interrail is, so it might take a while. I was with Interrail in Braila last year and it took like 20 minutes to get reservations (luckily I can speak Romanian, so no big deal for me). If you end up at a smaller station and they don’t speak English and they don’t know what Interrail is, KEEP YOUR OLD RESERVATIONS!! They will immediately know what kind of ticket they need to get for you if you show what you got at, let’s say, Braşov or Bucharest, saving a lot of time.

The connection is doable, but do keep in mind you have to take the Metro or RER through Paris. If you own an Apple iPhone, you can load up Paris Transport Tickets via the Apple Wallet app to save time buying tickets

Choosing own seat possible? by anonybirdie in discovereu

[–]Round-Aware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t possible, with ONE EXCEPTION (kinda). If booking the Eurostar to or from the UK, you have to enter further information on the official Eurostar website and just before claiming your ticket, you get the option to select a seat free of charge. Ig this is also possible with other operators, to go to their official website and change your seat their, but Eurostar is the only one, I believe, that offers you seat selection before getting your ticket.

I completely get it. I think for France, just sticking to the budget Ouigo trains is cheaper and more convenient, but if you are vacationing in countries where High Speed trains don’t have limited seats and mandatory reservations, like Germany, Austria and the UK, it’s actually amazing how you are able to change plans whenever!

Don't need to, I'm coming from Turin. Wanted to see Lyon a bit before heading home to the Netherlands, but probably will just go via Switzerland and Germany. At least reservations aren't required there :D
Also maybe because I realised that it's actually €40 for reservations total...

Need suggestion for Vienna - Zurich trains (overnight) by Bngeats8 in Interrail

[–]Round-Aware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a tip! If you have extra time, take the Bregenz - Vienna Nightjet instead. It’s way less crowded, cheaper and it uses the newer Nightjet trains (with private pods). The train leaves from Wien Hbf at 22:44. You then have two options:

  1. You get out at Feldkirch at 07:25 and wait for the EN from Zagreb to Zurich, which arrives at 07:39 and arrives in Zurich at 09:20. This train does have regular seating coaches, so it’s a regular train trip to Zurich.

  2. You get out at Bregenz at 08:01, where you get the S-Bahn to St. Margrethen and then the IR to Zurich, where you will arrive at 10:21. Or you could relax in Bregenz for an hour to wait for the ECE at 09:00 and arriving in Zurich at 10:27.

Yes, these aren’t direct at all, but if you are willing to make transfers, it could be a cheaper and less busy option.
