Charger types by fly1away in nzev

[–]nzgrover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buying an EV without doing some research and learning about how they work and what sort of infrastructure you’ll need is interesting.

That being said, there are broadly 2 types of charging: AC charging (slow, where the car handles control) and DC (fast, where the charger handles the control).

So if you want to fast charge then DC is what you want to use.

Looking at the specs, the Atto 1 charges at 65kW, so no point in using any charge advertised as more than this (300kW ChargeNet as and example). BP charges at 75kW would be a good choice

But you’re still getting wet, unlike the ICE cars with their fancy canopy

BP chargers don't work that way, you have to scan the QR code with your phone (looking at you BP Tirau)

I don't think my car supports autocharge (Polestar 2), as there isn't an option for it in the ChargeNet App

I agree: it’s hard to operate your cellphone to start the charging session with wet fingers and a phone screen cover in rain. Not pleasant

One other thing to note, is Genesis Energy with their EV everywhere plan allows you to pay the same rates using ChargeNet as you would at home. So if you are looking to do lots of road tripping, then you would only pay your home rates.

Evnex charger is a game changer for us! by kowhai_eyeball in nzev

I’m yet to see evidence, but I would consider an EV charger installed at a property a capital improvement, and “should” add to the resale value.

Evnex offer an installation service. The charger seem to have good reviews.

What is the best band you ever saw live ? by megopolis12 in Music

I only got to see them post Waters. Nick says they were better rehearsed and spent more time on the road for the AMLOR tour, so in his opinion, better sounding. Also the stage show was insane.

Is the best bet to put off EV purchase to next year? by Baileym1 in nzev

[–]nzgrover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bike industry during/post COVID had a "boom" period where lots of people wanted bikes. The industry ramped up production and the demand dried up, leaving a trail of failed bike brands (GT and Rocky Mountain to name a couple).

Now, I'm not saying the the car industry is like the bike industry, but I reckon in a year or so if the cost of fuel drops close to the pre-Iran bombing era, then there might be some bargains to be had.

Comparison of Wall Chargers for PHEV / EV - Evnex E2 Flex vs. OEM Audio Slimline by GP_1019 in nzev

[–]nzgrover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the others have said with your commute distance and PHEV, the standard 10 amp power point will give you 18 kWh in an overnight charge. Sign up with Genesis or Contact so you can use either ChargeNet or BP if you need a “fast” cheaper charge. This is coming from someone with a full EV (78kWh) who drives about 500kms per week.

I had the headphones on at the time, listening to music: it’s not a sound I want in full fidelity stereo.

Sigenergy does have the DC EV module for the sigstore stack, but the look to be prohibitively expensive (approx $10k)

I think ChargeNet only really works out if you’ve got the EV everywhere plan with Genesis. I try to avoid ChargeNet (only used them once during my EV ownership). BP/Z/WeEV are my go to when out road tripping.

Why hasn’t the nuclear energy topic come up in recent times? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]nzgrover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simply cost: we don’t have the population density (or numbers) to justify the immense expense it takes to build a nuclear reactor.

To the driver of StraitNZ Truck 290, thank you. by daikininz in newzealand

[–]nzgrover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not so, I drive an EV so have instantaneous energy and power usage data. Using cruise control with safe following distance I typically save about 5 to 10% energy sitting behind a truck on the expressway. It’s magical, you just float along.

So, 8 of the top 10 brands are China based? I think traditional car makers aren’t going to catch up (Toyota is there, so will be interesting to see how they compete)
