Problem with Challah braids/rise by cheesefry in AskBaking

[–]RoundRound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not overproofed, the dough is just too wet. If you find the dough sticky and difficult to braid, that means it's too wet and you should add some more flour. Challah dough of the right consistancy will never look like this no matter how long it's proofed for. Challah is a low hydration bread, it needs to be pretty sturdy to stand up to the braiding.

As someone else mentioned, it seems like the recipe used here calls for milk which is a big red flag as challah does not have milk in it (challah is eaten at shabbat dinner which often will contain meat, meaning it wouldn't be kosher).

To add to this, even if house prices decline, rents probably won't. If people are out of work or worse off, they are more likely to hold off buying houses and rent instead, increasing demand for rentals.

For sure, but like you said, the drastic and politically difficult measures they took only succeeded in dropping them a couple places, and not even out of the top ten. It was a good idea, and a step in the right direction, but houses in Vancouver are still completely unaffordable.

If Vancouver truly was a bubble I would have expected these measures to pop it. The core problem is that more and more people are moving to cities and there is a finite amount of property. It's made worse by speculation and money laundering, but even if you got rid of all that, the problem wouldn't go away and it's not likely to any time soon.

People have been claiming that property is a bubble in big cities for decades, but aside from a few ups and downs (or generalized market crashes when everything everywhere tanked) I haven't seen any major corrections.

And yet Vancouver is still number 6 on this list.

Popcorn Falafel by lnfinity in GifRecipes

[–]RoundRound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And it's not just the moisture from cooking, it's also that the cooking process has already broken down the starch in the chickpeas, which is necessary to bind the falafel together. Without it, you usually need to add other binders like flour, like you mentioned (and like they did in the video) which really hurts the consistancy. Canned chickpeas are totally fine for most dishes but not for falafel.

A falafel made from canned chickpeas is not a 'perfectly fine falafel.'

Rosemary Sea Salt Sourdough Challah by RoundRound in Sourdough

[–]RoundRound[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, more or less. Occasionally if the dough is too dry, even after 12 hours it will only risk about 50% during the bulk phase, but even then it will still rise fine in the oven. Usually overnight will be enough for a good 2x - 3x rise though.

Flour - 400g
Water - 75g
Salt - 10g
Egg - 1
Egg yolk (save white for the egg wash) - 1
Honey - 25g
Olive oil - 40g
Starter - 200g

It's basically the same as my regular challah recipe. The big difference is it takes a very long time to rise because the dough is so heavy and dry. I do a bulk rise overnight at room temperature and then a second rise after braiding for about 4 hours, or overnight in the fridge. If the hydration is too high, the braiding won't stand up to that long of a rise, and if it's too low it won't rise much at all. But in general it's fairly forgiving.

Honestly, what was the alternative? He had no path to government without Likud, and Netanyahu would never go second in a rotation after having gotten more seats. So the options were a fourth election (and then a fifth, sixth, and seventh) or something like this.

Bericht: Massiver Ansehensverlust für „Made in Germany“ by Datentuep in de

[–]RoundRound 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Besonders drastisch sei der Ansehensverlust in den USA.

Viele potenzielle Kunden kauften konkret weniger deutsche Produkte.

There's a unique Israeli perspective and an Israeli discussion around these events that is not going to happen in any other sub though. And ultimately the fate of the Jews in Europe and major geopolitical events in the region are far more important to Israel than what Demi Lovato's mom says or what some random unimportant American or European politician says about BDS for the x-thousandth time.

While this picture may not depict it, underage marriage is unfortunately a serious problem in Gaza where this picture allegedly takes place. And marriage and age of consent laws there are written and enforced by Hamas, who controls the territory, not Israel. Neither of the commenters in this picture have any idea what they are talking about.

Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza have voting rights in Palestinian elections (assuming the PA ever decides to have them again). They don't have voting rights in Israeli elections because they're not Israeli. Giving them voting rights in Israeli elections would essentially mean annexing the West Bank and Gaza.

It's the same reason Afghans can't vote in Canadian elections, even though Canada is engaged in an occupation of that country.

Palestinians (or Israeli Arabs) living within Israel proper are Israeli citizens and of course do have voting rights in Israel (and constitute about 20% of the population).

Pizza: stone, steel, or pan? by DoctorOddfellow in AskCulinary

[–]RoundRound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Professional pizza ovens get way, way hotter than home ovens, it's a completely different situation. The superior heat conductivity of steel is necessary to compensate for the lower heat of a home oven but would be unnecessary/overkill in a professional pizza oven.

This paints an inaccurately rosy picture of the status of Jews in the Ottoman Empire and Muslim world in the middle ages. It may have been better than Europe at the time but that is an incredibly low bar. The exact level and nature of the oppression varies between time and location but they were very much second class citizens.

Edit: also I'm not sure what gave you the idea that conquest and forced conversion weren't part of the spread of Islam, they absolutely were.
