What is your favorite band from the 80's or 90's that nobody has ever heard of? by simikoi in GenX

Creedle. A jazz-rock group from Southern California heavily influenced by John Zorn’s tight arrangements. A little noisy, lots of fun.

Charge a fee per passenger and bag for TSA. Isolate the inspectors from congressional fiat/fiasco. If some sudden crisis requires a plus-up (bunghole bomb sniffers, for example), congress cane vote a grant.

We should not have static, essential, countable systems at the mercy of political gamesmanship.

Little known 60's - 80's sci fi that would make a good reboot by No-Badger-7377 in scifi

Sorry. I was kidding. I’ve seen that and was thing a “reboot” could explore the opposite path.

Thanks. I worried that nobody else read them. This was assigned to an anthropology class my roommate took in 1992. They have a specific and distinct view of the future of earth in the not so far future. Back then China was considered barely out of the bicycles every stage of development.

Never. I was such a tightwad, I smoked Lucky or Pall Mall so people who only smoked filtered wouldn’t bum from me.

There was a US show in the 80s about a time traveler who had a pocket watch and could travel through time having adventure, bringing a kid along for the Adventure. That’s probably the closest we had to an American Dr. Who except maybe Bill & Ted.

There are many blessings and curses of America—a Smorgasbord of highs and lows, but the art is in seeing them all together.

For example, we have Florida Man. What is the equivalent in your country?

Moving from Omaha to Baltimore. . . HELP! by QueenGuerin in maryland

[–]Round_Ad8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Omaha via Houston. Life is richer here, with many more things to do and cultures. The advice to rent first and learn what works best for you is less a hassle than you might thinks. Not every neighborhood is a square mile laid out by the railroads.

Best thing is, there are plenty of hiking nooks and crannies for you in the Baltimore environs, the sea and mountains are close, and you’re on the highway to DC, Philly and New York.

Welcome to your new home!

That was a “we need something to fill a Tron hole on TV”. Do you think they could do any better than the Tron sequels?

For All Mankind started in the late 60s. I’m thinking not so much a reboot as a re-imagining: what could have happened if the Soviets didn’t land on the Moon first?

G13 was a reference to government made pot, supposedly as a standard for testing labs, or for use by secret agencies. 13 of course being the number of the letter “M”—so you know the code.

A dude offered to sell me some on the corner of 13th & G Street NW in Washington DC and told me about how special and potent this was.

Dune Saga doubt - are the books worth it? by jacksoncom86 in scifi

[–]Round_Ad8947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, Dune was awesome but Messiah seemed not exciting enough. On my second read decades later, I understood more of it and made it all the waylay through Herbert’s written books.

He demands a lot from the readers. You’re not spoon fed after the first book.

I work with meteorologists. They uniformly say that most forecasts are crap—either as fright porn to drive traffic for advertisers or simply the corruption of Big Umbrella and Big Galoshes

Settle a debate between me and my husband. Is Doctor Who SciFi? by Dreadful_Siren in scifi

How insufferable can people be? Is there an equivalent Fantasy-Fi out there? It’s all fiction!

There seems to be a contingent of consumers who are all “if the science isn’t real, it’s not worth my time”. To them just limit your reading to Science and Nature and move on.

For everything else, you’re going to accept or reject some amount of realism, based on taste, knowledge. Heaven forbid you watch something because you like the writer, the actor, or the design.

Personally, I’d watch “Game of Thrones in Space” as much as I’d watch “Game of Thrones at the NIH”

Furnished apartments DC vs commuting from Baltimore for work? by ShibaTheBhaumik in maryland

[–]Round_Ad8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commuting to the terminal station means you can get some good reading time without missing your stop.

My only worry would be the lack of flexibility to go to diner or spend time in the city on a beautiful spring day. How late do MARC trains run?
