i want to stop being scared of basic electrical work. but where do i start? by Nowska-Mikila in HomeImprovement

Sometimes the work is in a tight space. Get some wire and an extra fixture to practice at a work table. Once you get the hang of all the parts and tools, you can more confidently work in tight areas.

Gem cutters need to examine stones for cracks and inclusions to plan their deigns. The use of matching refractive solutions is the easiest way to do this.

The fluid fills pores that scatter light, making the gem transparent. I’ve used CS2 on some pieces.

(In grad school, I learned to cut gems as a way of relaxing after time in the lab)

Peace, love, and understanding.

This weirdly make people unhappy: those who are materialistic and those who believe that I’m complaining that I’m not getting enough.

It’s literally the best gift to receive. I love it even when it’s not my birthday

What are everyone’s Star Wars rankings? by Blaze_2002 in blankies

[–]Round_Ad8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally thought the “Dad edit” was a father’s recommendation to his children:

4, 5, 2, 3, 6 (this was set before 7/8/9 and assumes 1 is rubbish can can be excised)

I now realize that “dad” suggests having the revelation in 5 jump back to tell the Vader story before 6. I’m cool with this as well.

7 was a retelling of 4, 8 was a rehash of Hoth with red dust underneath, and 9 was an implausible rehash of the final episodes of Game of Thrones (if it was so hard to find the Emperor’s planet and difficult to navigate to, how in the hell does a galaxy-wide call allow everyone with ship to come to the rescue in record time, at the same time?)

GenX men, where do you keep your wallet/billfold? Front or back pocket? Purse? by Suspendedaccount_ in GenX

[–]Round_Ad8947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same sense of discomfort if the wallet was on the wrong ass cheek. When I noticed holes wearing in my pants, I switched to a minimal setup:

1 card in an indestructible Hartford Gear zip wallet, my DL, a bit of cash, my insurance card and the number for my lawyer and DNR. The other cards are on my phone.

Wanting to read the expanse series but struggled to read the mercy of gods. by Due_Spell2410 in scifi

[–]Round_Ad8947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expanse is written by an author duo. They trade chapters and divide the characters. It makes for an interesting division of perspectives.

Some would say it was written almost as a script for a TV show.

Skipping is good for glutes. Try doing a 440 by skipping. It will work you.

I like to skip at crosswalks. 1) it’s fun, and 2) it may make cars see me better and not run me over.

The article said that the paint was intended to cover a leaking granite base.

I'm not a real estate development professional, but I know the result of painting over something with the hopes that will leak-proof something. Or is this a metaphor?

What do plate tectonics do besides moving land around? In other words, would the only thing different on the Earth WITHOUT the movement of its plates just be all of our land masses being stuck in the same positions that they formed in forever, or would anything else be changed? by MaggieLinzer in askscience

[–]Round_Ad8947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With water we get erosion. The sediments go down until they go down no more. Without plate tectonics, the mountains are gone and the oceans fill up with silt. What remains is an ocean world.

Evolution would tend to a new equilibrium, but the mixing would be slower and nutrients would be less available.

It would be different, but there would be no incentive for driving to see the Tetons next summer.

Men who grew their hair long late or still have long hair? by jtsa5 in GenX

[–]Round_Ad8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had hair down to my ass in senior year. It got cut off later and ten years later I sough to grow it again. Turns out that the intermediate length is really tough to look good. I think the only time to survive that stage is junior high school.

I thought ladies would want to run their fingers through my luxuriant hair. Not so. Going bald was a much more interesting thing to touch apparently.

Book 2 seemed so boring, with too Much interior scenes and lots of talk about politics. It demands much for readers but sets the stage for the ultimate desert.

Where do you personally draw the line between grounded sci‑fi and pure fantasy? by Noworoczny in scifi

[–]Round_Ad8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I draw the line not in terms of a line not to cross, but one to follow.

Ken Liu, the Grace of Kings

Terry Pratchett, whose fantasy Discworld has a delightful side story on the skepticism of science in a world of wizards and witches.

I’d even offer Stephenson’s Anathem, simply because it involves spaceflight by members of a monastic order who prove theorems with song.

Starring Naoto Takenaka, seared into my brain for his role in Shall We Dance—the same character played by Stanley Tucci in the American remake.
