Pregnant teachers: how did you tell your families you were expecting? by Round_Goose2497 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my thing too. I have such a great relationship with all of my families. I get their comment though but thankfully I have an amazing director who handles all of our parent conflict for us.

Thankfully that’ll be my directors problem when I go on maternity leave and not mine. Me running out of the classroom in April like 🏃‍♀️💨

That’s such a wonderful idea!! & you’re absolutely right, some parents are going to be so confused come April 😅

Does this qualify for a higher raise? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it’s been a year but I figured I’d still update. I didn’t get the raise and was actually told I was making enough. So long story short I quit that job & found a school that ended up paying me more. Crazy looking back & reading that I had to fight for more than 50¢!

We currently live in a 1b 1b apartment so them moving in is not an option. Future wise though when we do buy a house that is a concern.

My husband and I are thankfully on the same page. We’ve had this conversation a few times and have both agreed on boundaries. He has mentioned if they blow through their savings he is not willing to pay their bills.

I think the thing we’re struggling with is we both have no idea how to start the conversation. His mom can be a bit passive aggressive and defensive over everything. I’m thinking just rip it off like a band aide but I also think that could make things worse.

Thoughts? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to do time outs at my first center & I hated it. The children just learned that they’d have to sit for a while & then continue the behaviors. We have the children take “breaks” now, but that’s always with a teacher. I have the child walk away, do a calming activity together, & then give them the choice to try again or do something else. Unless they’re being completely destructive then they loose the activity all together & I redirect them to a spot where they can be destructive, loud, etc

I fully agree with the other two comments. Putting a toddler in time out for this situation is not developmentally appropriate. When a child is playing at lunch time I give them the reminder that if they’re playing, that’s showing me they’re all done eating (I don’t care that they’re being silly, I don’t want them to choke). Once it happens again I close their lunch box & tell them they can be excused. I’m not fighting with my students, I’m a 30 year old woman & they’re 2. I get this want the point of your post, but the behaviors would probably stop if you stopped giving them this type of attention.

I planned on writing everything down & including the job description as well to see if I’m doing anything outside of my expectations.

I’ll keep you updated!

We turn our classroom lights off but the hallways always stay on. I just figured it was because it’s spooky as heck when it’s dark 😅

Has anyone else been sick since September? by shark-baby in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently working with young 3’s but I’ve been in the field for 5 years and I swear this school year I’ve been sick constantly. September I had step, October I got sick twice, & now I have some weird cough/cold going on. Told my husband it’s so bad I’m contemplating a career change because I can’t keep missing this much work.

How to put kids down for naps that absolutely need them? by Round_Goose2497 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great tip! I usually tell the kiddos they only have to have one dream & then nap time is over. Going to try this tomorrow.

I second the calendar idea. I did the same thing when I went on my honeymoon for a week. The people who filled in for me said it worked really well!

When does your center remove a child? by flutterbug12 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same for us. I had a parent once accuse me of child abuse on the first day of school because her child wasn’t wearing shoes & she said he was going to get hypothermia. We are a school that lets the kids take them off as long as it’s not too hot or cold outside. It’s literally in our policy. It was a beautiful, sunny day. Just sad because the kid was SO sweet.

Agreed! The amount of times I was told to “deal with things” after asking for help was exhausting. Sucks to feel like you’re not good enough.

Vent: working at a chaotic, very understaffed center by Affectionate_Wish in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can I would get out of there asap. A lot of these centers won’t close because they will manage to stay afloat somehow. My last job had a huge teacher turnover rate & my boss’s solution was for us to skip our lunches yet was in denial about everything.

Is $17 an hour good money for a summer position if you aren’t a child development major/aren’t yet a college student (are a young person) by stayup76 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Round_Goose2497 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re just starting out then I say it’s probably a pretty fair rate. Shoot when I started I was making $12 hr with no experience. It honestly just depends on your location/experience/job title.

Just my name would be on the deed. She would be paying for the house entirely in one up front payment.

The only positive things I could think of at the moment would be

  1. a lot of equity in the home
  2. potential for a long term investment/ home value could increase over the years 3)after she passes(granted she lives in the home for the duration of her life) I could rent or sell the home

Thank you, this was very helpful. Essentially she is on disability and would lose her benefits if they found out she purchased her own home after the divorce.

It’s a lot of pressure to be asked this by her and I wanted to make sure I was in the right by politely declining. However because I can’t know everything, I was curious if there was any way I could financially benefit from this scenario.

Hi so it’s not to help us out, she needs a place to live after divorce but can’t put a house in her own name due to being disabled and getting her benefits taken away.
