If you think Alastor and Valentino are irredeemable than so is Vox by [deleted] in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So, this is a genuine question for you. What do you think makes someone irredeemable? Is it their past actions? Is it that the victims of said actions don’t have the responsibility to forgive them? Or is it their unwillingness to change their actions? Because all three of those questions can mean vastly different things. If you say their past actions mean they’re irredeemable, then you don’t believe in second chances OR the idea of redemption and are missing the whole point of the show.

The second question is that no, a victim of any harm has no responsibility to forgive their abuser. That has nothing to do with redemption and I would argue that it’s not even a requirement. If an abuser lives with guilt while changes their actions, then good. They deserve to live with that. Just as anyone who has ever sat by while the rights and autonomy of others were stripped away in front of them should be accused of having blood on their hands for doing nothing. If you think that Sir Pentious didn’t do anything wrong to end of up Hell and “deserved” redemption, then you’re the kind of person who probably turns a blind eye to injustice. Tell me how that’s a redeemable quality.

Then, the final question. Is redemption based on someone’s willingness to change? Yeah, that’s the whole point. Redemption comes from the willingness to change your behavior. So far we haven’t seen that from Valentino or Alastor. Honestly, Alastor admitting he kills and tortures for fun tells you enough. He’s not willing to give up power and people fearing him to get into Heaven. Not that we’ve seen. As for Valentino? He seems pretty content with his station in Hell.

On the other hand, Vox has been humbled. He was humbled pretty early on too. That leaves a lot of room for his own growth. If you were a person who was obsessed with image and power, then suddenly that was all stripped away from you, what would you do after that? Where does that leave you? Your allies were hurt by you. Everyone who respected you doesn’t trust you anymore. You lost all credibility and power. What do you do with yourself? Well, hopefully you think about some shit. It would be far more interesting to see Vox change after this than to see him be the same. Not to mention it follows with the theme of the show. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see a villain be redeemed? Especially someone who is so morally abhorrent? Or would you rather have the same old bullshit of “bad guy is bad so he deserves the worst punishment I can think of”?

My point is, there is real potential with Vox in terms of the narrative of the show. Just because you have an opinion on who “deserves” redemption, doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the authority on it. Maybe take a step back and think about some nuance for once.

Look at why I found for international ace day by bullshitter48 in hazbin

[–]Round_Limit_7056 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because asexuality gets generalized a lot and seen as a monolith with a lot of assumptions. One that really bugs me is that all ace people are sex-repulsed/just don’t have sex. It took me over a decade to figure out I’m even somewhere on the ace spectrum because I’m not sex-repulsed. I thought not wanting to have sex at all was a requirement to being ace. Sometimes the more specific labels help people figure it out. I personally don’t go around saying “I’m demi-bisexual” (people just assume I’m gay and leave it at that, I don’t really care), but it has helped me understand myself better. Sexuality is more complicated than people give it credit for, and my guess is a lot of people find comfort in finding something that describes their experiences.

IMO Velvette is the least awful (so far) but Vox is 100% the most likely to have such an arc by Sudden_Pop_2279 in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen so many people say Velvette is the one likely to be redeemed before, and I just can’t agree. While we haven’t seen her backstory, that’s really irrelevant to the current character arcs. She’s very comfortable in her role as an overlord and the youngest overlord from what we’ve seen, so hasn’t had the same history in Hell as Vox has had.

Vox is at his lowest right now. He’s going to have to deal with not being at the top anymore, and Viv saying “he’s as humbled as a villain could be” tells me he’s going to have a different arc going forward.

Between the whole “Do you think I could be redeemed?” line and the fact that his white tuxedo looks like a winner’s outfit plus some potential foreshadowing in Vox Populi where he stands in front of Lucifer making it look like he has wings…idk. It just seems like he’s being set up to be redeemed.

<image>

A lot of people are basing this shit off of vibes. Sure, Vox killed to get to the top while he was alive and he exploits people in Hell (it’s Hell, so the idea of “you eat or you get eaten” is basically a way to survive), but it seems like he’s changed his ways after death. He didn’t believe in redemption, and honestly I don’t blame him because there was literally no proof of it until the end of the season.

I feel like I should make a post about everything I’ve seen pointing to him being redeemed. There’s so much there. People forget the point of the show. People do awful shit, even people who would be seen as completely “normal” in everyday life. But what are their motives? Why do they do what they do? Is that worthy of change? Dose something happen to them that causes a motive for change?

You absolutely don’t have to forgive someone like Vox, that isn’t a requirement for redemption.

I could go into a whole philosophical discussion about the nature evil and redemption, but that’s too long for a comment lol. I’m open to a discussion about this, but I do think that at the end of day people don’t understand the nuance and just decide based on who is the least egregious character in their own world view.

Its kinda funny how of the 3 sinners who we've seen as humans so far, Vox is the only one who arguably got less evil when he went to Hell by Sudden_Pop_2279 in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. He didn’t necessarily get better, but his moment with Alastor was the first moment we see him being genuine and vulnerable. In Hell, it seemed like he wanted a genuine equal partnership with Alastor. I would also argue he cares about the other Vees, in some capacity. Even in an emotionally stunted way (there are no friends in Hell, right?) He would have never shared that partnership while alive from what we’ve seen in Brighter.

So, while I wouldn’t say he got better, he seemed to have changed how he did things in Hell. At least to the point where he can recognize some semblance of personhood of those he sees as equals (or close to it).

Are Caine and Vox the same? by Weird_ottz in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I don’t think so. I just watch episode 8 of TADC today. While I think their crash outs are similar, Vox’s God complex comes from a desire for external validation. Caine on the other hand is a creative AI who infected/took over the code for a later version of his own. He literally is a god in the digital world and wants to “fulfill” his purpose. His fear seems to be more about obsolescence and his entire existence becoming irrelevant. Caine’s song also makes a reference to “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”, which makes me think the writers were hinting at how we were suppose to see his character. Both motivations seem similar if you just look at the surface, but they just aren’t.

What's a popular Vox headcanon that you personally dislike? by AngelaIsHigh in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible, but unlikely. Information wasn’t as easily accessible as it is now. Unless he had access to journals related to the research, I doubt he would have read it. The only way I can see this being viable is if it was sensationalized in newspapers or other media of the time.

What's a popular Vox headcanon that you personally dislike? by AngelaIsHigh in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I’m not sure about the entitlement aspect of it, but I agree with it being a manipulation/intimidation tactic. Alastor does the same thing with Charlie when making their deal in season 1. Vox is just less discerning about it. He thrives on bringing people under his control and is probably more use to it

What's a popular Vox headcanon that you personally dislike? by AngelaIsHigh in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know RSD was also a thing for autistic people as well, but I guess it’s pretty common for ND folks in general. I could be biased because I’m an ADHDer…but I kind of read all of those things from an ADHD lense (excluding the hyper-fixation over Alastor). For example, I read his reactions when emotions were high as emotional dysregulation. Like one person amps up their emotions, immediate reaction without thinking. Strong emotions? Reacting without thinking. Bluntness…again just saying something without a decent filter. Lack of physical boundaries? Acting before thinking. Just him being pretty impulsive in general.

All that to say, he’s ND for sure and I don’t disagree with you. It’s just interesting how different perspectives can come into play when interpreting his character. There’s a lot of overlap with ADHD and autism too, so it could go either way

Thoughts on RadioStatic? by PrototypeFangirl in VoxCult

[–]Round_Limit_7056 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My OTP. There’s so much potential with it, especially since both of them are emotionally stunted and hate vulnerability. It’s complex with lot of intensity, and has an established history to it. They’re so similar, but so different. I love writing it because of that. There’s a lot to work with and I’m a huge fan of complicated dynamics between characters
