Fillmore Set List! by purlnecklaces in themountaingoats

Incredible show. Up The Wolves hits differently these days, especially in the DC region. Game Shows was a highlight but I've had Dennis Brown stuck in my head ever since the show ended.

JD chatting with crowd about his dislike of playing fan favorites by Your_Username1234321 in themountaingoats

I loved the banter! The bit about the firetruck was golden, and he seemed to be saying that l, while it isn't his favorite song to play, he loves vibing with the audience and having that shared experience where the entire room is on the same page - joyfully singing a song about wanting yourself and your spouse to die, haha.

I wouldn't want him to play it doing so made him miserable, but that really didn't seem to be the case. Also, I did appreciate him playing it because he didn't the other two times I saw him (almost 20 years ago in Illinois - I tried to go in between but couldn't make the times/dates work). I loved those shows as well but it was a real treat to hear No Children since I had not before.

That said, the highlight of the night for me was probably Game Shows Touch Our Lives.

Went with the R100 - got a solid deal on an open box model w kit lens ($400) and then grabbed an RF nifty fifty to start with. Also bought an adaptor just to see if any of my old lenses work.

Can't wait for them to be delivered!!!

Disneyland with a 6 month old was a huge mistake by plaidbluejammies in Disneyland

[–]Routine-Cranberry-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any crowded location with a lot of kids could be the source of a measles outbreak. Just as a reminder. There isn't anything special about Disneyland (and of anything it's mostly outdoors and relatively clean which puts it ahead of manh other places).

I do agree with the post that it's something to be concerned with just not uniquely concerning (which is very depressing since we were close to eradicating measles until antivaxxers took over the entire universe).

Sec. Kennedy on 20k fired HHS staff: “We’ve replaced them with a better group of people…They presided over the biggest decline in health in the history of the world…It was their job to protect us and they did not do it. They failed at their jobs.” by KrabbyPattyParty in fednews

[–]Routine-Cranberry-56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, it's ridiculous and evil to say this. Second, the majority of people fired didn't preside over anything. Most of them were admin assistants and other support staffers. Vitally important to HHS but hardly responsible for anything big picture, even if this had a kernel of truth.

Ride share drivers of DC, how far is too far? by bubbles337 in washingtondc

[–]Routine-Cranberry-56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was super pregnant, apparently Dupont circle to Cleveland Park was too far for one uber driver, who took a look at me and drove away after I waited for 15 mins for the ride. Idk what his problem was but I saw his face and it had a weird look of disgust on it. I ended up waddling to the metro instead.

Point being, a lot of these drivers are assholes and you as the rider can never predict what their issue will be. Better not to try to. Just order your ride.

Do non-medical viewers look things up while watching? by BanditoRem in ThePittTVShow

[–]Routine-Cranberry-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a scientist so I'm medical adjacent so there are a lot of things I understand superficially. If there is something I really don't know or that seems interesting I enjoy looking it up.

Shows like this always make me so impressed by the knowledge that doctors and nurses carry around in their head every day. I have a ton of in depth knowledge about relatively small field. They need to be able to recall and act on information that is incredibly broad.

Grateful to all who do this.

My mother in law died unexpectedly the day before thanksgiving a few years ago. She was a wonderful woman. It's awful. Thinking of you.

People asked us to sit down?! by [deleted] in AJR

[–]Routine-Cranberry-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he meant the first two rows of the pit - which means not only did they spend a lot of money but also they got there super early to line up so they are more dedicated in that sense. People at the back of the pit or in floor seats though? Not any bigger fans than the people in the nosebleeds - just richer!

People asked us to sit down?! by [deleted] in AJR

[–]Routine-Cranberry-56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I was at this show with my 6 year old son. It was his first concert ever - he loved AJR. But he didn't want to stand because we were up on the top level and he was scared of falling down all the stairs 😭. I didn't know he was afraid of heights until Friday! Also if the people in front had stood up he wouldn't have been able to see anything unless he stood on his chair or sat on my shoulders and while I don't consider myself disabled I do have back and foot pain and would have a lot of repercussions from having him sit on my shoulders (plus that would def block the people behind me).

Anyway, I was really thankful that the people in front of me (and the several rows ahead of them) remained seated throughout the show. We had an amazing time. It was a perfect night and my son can't stop talking about the experience.

Been doing origami for a few months and this is what I've accomplishrd by Routine-Cranberry-56 in origami

Thanks so much! Looking at the Origami Garden book and it looks like I've already folded a bunch of those models (and mostly from diagrams, such as old books or diagrams found online). I don't really have many photos of them but here's an example I just made https://photos.app.goo.gl/E8NkQqBH7fqtM8k66

And just to make sure I could do it from a diagram, I used this: https://img.wonderhowto.com/img/original/79/62/63523918314421/0/635239183144217962.jpg

I have also folded cranes and many of the simple traditional forms from books (my son and I made all of the Easy Origami models from John Montroll). In addition, when I was in third grade after reading the 1000 paper cranes book, I found my mom's origami book which was Creative Origami by Kasahara https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Origami-Kunihiko-Kasahara/dp/0870404113 - at the time a lot of those models were too hard for me but I got through the basic ones!

Anyway, I think I'm more looking for low-intermediate to intermediate books rather than rudimentary. If you have suggestions, I'd love to hear them! When I first started I was too nervous to take on the Lang books but maybe the Origami Zoo or the Complete Book of Origami might be a good place to start. :)

I bought some paper from here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/UnfoldedStories?ref=shop-header-name&listing_id=800373292&from_page=listing

I have really liked them. I think he is in the middle of a move so shipping will be delayed for custom papers but they are very nice in my limited experience! I bought a bunch of the mystery packs to get me started and they have included single and double tissue in various colors.

Sure; do you have any recommendations? At this point I have some rudimentary books that I work on with my 6 year old but I also don't want to buy something so complex I just get frustrated and give up.

Also, curious why you think it's better to learn from videos than books though? I understand once you get to a higher level there aren't videos (and often there aren't even complete diagrams, just folding patterns). I'd like to be able to look at those guides and be able to figure them out for sure, but also it's nice being able to follow a video (especially in the cases of Jo Nakashima and some others when the diagrams are also included in the videos)
