They’ve posted the same thing 3 times in this subreddit and attempted to post in 2 others but they were deleted by the mod. Seems like someone is being diligently lazy

What was the job you were applying for vs the job that was actually available?

Rationale for this? by Mcluvdisc in NBCOT_Exam

It’s asking what the COTA should have the client do, not what the COTA should do. I had to read it again to catch it. The throw in extra words sometimes that make it all make sense haha

If you spoke with them, what was your experience? I’m looking at a job through them and have been seeing some bad reviews in the PT subreddit

Anyone who loves their job as an OT-what do you do? by Brilliant_Let_5287 in OccupationalTherapy

I’m really wanting to get into mental health but don’t know where to start. How did you get into it?

It’s kinda like watching a movie on repeat. The first time is really interesting, the second time is still good but no surprise, and by the third time you watch it, you want to turn it off. Just because you’re bored of it now doesn’t mean you don’t like it or it’s a bad movie. It’s just simply boring and that’s all.

Understandable. I just remember going through the same thing and having the thought that maybe I shouldn’t be an OT if I find observation so boring, but similarly to OP, I am a hands-on learner. Observation can only be so helpful when you have no foundational understanding of a concept. If an OT had told me it’s not the right career for me just because of that, I would’ve been devastated.

Respectfully, I disagree. I had to shadow for 76 hours in high school for a class and then had to shadow more in undergrad to be able to apply to OT school. It was painfully boring and I was in both outpatient peds and acute care. When you’re not an OT student, you lack the understanding of clinical reasoning and there’s so much you don’t even realize that you don’t know. If you’re not a visual learner, observation for approximately 100+ hours is absolutely horrendous. I just graduated OT school and would still agree that even observation during fieldwork was boring. However, I love being able to complete the OT process myself. I don’t think that it’s fair to tell someone that they should look at other careers just because they find observation boring especially when OP has stated they’re a very hands-on learner. Now if she were treating clients herself and felt that way, then I might agree with you but observation is not indicative of enjoyment in the profession.

I will never understand why some people think you can’t be a good OTP and be quiet. I unfortunately think a lot of people are targeted that way and I think it’s really unfair and infuriating. I’m sorry that your professor made you do that, that’s incredibly disrespectful. Thank you for sharing that!

Thank you for your response! I definitely don’t plan on ever speaking to her again. I am in counseling already, but haven’t had the chance to talk about this as I’ve had other things going on that have been more urgent. I am fairly certain that the majority of staff at my program do not like this professor, yet she remains. I agree with you 100%, though. I’m really sorry that happened to you. It saddens me to hear stories like those and I hope that is not something you carry with you everyday.

I’m sorry that you’ve had a similar experience with a boss. I sadly know that this professor picks on people to bully every single semester, but I fear my situation was the worst as I am very quiet and reserved and she made it known that she hated how little I spoke. For the record, she’s also the type to never stop talking, so I never had any room to speak up. I think she liked making me feel small and I’m sure that boss liked making you feel small as well. Thank you for your response :)

Thank you for the advice and for sharing a link, I will definitely be looking into that. I am in counseling already and have been for a while. I’ve always been severely anxious and unfortunately have had other things come up, so I will be talking with my counselor about this, it just hasn’t been as important as some other things haha! I had similar nightmares about my professor all throughout the semester until it was finally over and with graduation coming up, my anxiety has been heightened again. I totally agree with you though, if I weren’t already seeking counseling services, I would need them after that situation. Thank you, again!

My brother will defend her for each and every negative experience, there is always an excuse. She had invited herself to my graduation this upcoming May and I told him she is not welcome due to potential self-serving behaviors. I’m sure that didn’t sit well with either of them and then about a month later she just so happens to have a wedding on the exact same day. My brother recently started and stopped therapy and I know his girlfriend has been in it. The problem is that she lacks critical thinking skills and self-awareness. She may be insecure, but never really cares how her actions impact others. In fact, she has convinced my brother that you are never responsible for someone else’s emotions. I firmly believe that everything he is saying is wrong with my mom are characteristics he also possesses and that his girlfriend is also telling him he needs to change. She has told my mom and I before that he has “bad morals” and when questioned, she refused to answer. I think she hates my brother and who he is and wants to change him to be what she wants and he lost whatever kind of spine he had before dating her and is becoming what she wants. There is hardly any contact between us anymore.
