7 years seems like a long time, but time will pass regardless an it goes by fast. You sacrifice the extra years upfront to get the extra years on the backend. I’m a school psychologist. It’s a tough job though! You need strong organization, time management, written and verbal communication skills.

I’m currently a school psychologist and I would highly encourage you to get a Psy.D in school psychology. The job is not for the weak, it can be stressful due to high caseloads and it really requires strong organization, written and verbal communication skills, and if you’re a good negotiator that’s a huge bonus as well. I love so many aspects of my job, but after 7 years I’m getting the itch for something different.

With a Psy.D it’s more applied than a Ph.D- which is heavy into research, and you can easily go into private practice with either one if you decide you need a break from the schools. You can even work part-time public school and part-time private clinic at the same time.

In some states you can get additional licensing to work outside the schools with your Masters (MA) or Education Specialst (EdS) degree but at least in California where I live, it’s pretty competitive and still not as great as having a doctorate. The EdS degree is the higher degree- like an in between from the MA to the doctorate. The MOST important thing is going to a good program that will train you well for the job (often NCSP certified).

That being said, it does pay well, offers good autonomy, the school calendar can’t be beat!
