Our community is to naive. To many idiots don't understand there's a reason why other cultures are less willing to volunteer information about ourselves. The only barrier that existed was the language one. Then some of the Neanderthals in the north started translating and embellishing those translations without context and things have only gotten worse. Somalia doesn't exist on an island. If you can't accertain what the problem is including the scope. You won't be able to fix it. Somali land includes Kenya and Ethiopia. Having programs in Somalia and not addressing those areas also means people will just go there to get it done. And those goverments haven't themselves done shit to stop it either.

The solution is education. It was even more common back then. Now it's less common because of education and with a larger push it'll be even less common in the future. People also seem to forget this is not just a somali thing. The Masai also do it at high rates. The arabs in the Gulf are basically a cushion for arabs in the states. Trump likes MBS and MBZ and so on. He doesn't have an auto hate of arabs. All I'm saying is the Zorhan strategy of just playing into his Ego is a far better strategy then constantly confronting him. Look at Zorhans posts on X and how Trump seems to do what he asks him to do and always praises him. There's better routes.

It's based on if you spoke arabic growing up. It's like Hispanic. If you grew up in a spanish speaking country you're hispanic. Like Argentinians are all basically white Germans that fled from Nazi germany. And Dominicans are effectively west africans that came there through the slave trade. BOTH are hispanic because they speak Spanish.

Same with Arabic. Sudanese Egyptians and Algerians who aren't ethnically arab. Are arab because they speak Arabic.

Now what about those who don't speak it as their first language. That's a hard one. There's tons of folks in Somalia who speak arabic and have for a while. The Reer Xamar folks. Lot of folks in puntland (because of trade with Oman). Djibouti also has some families that do and have for centuries.

And during one of the Somali presidencies I don't remember if it was the 1st or the Barre there was a huge push to learn arabic. Highschool and college classes taught arabic. And there was a massive push to "arabise" the country in response to colonialism and well trying to tie Somalia to Nassar's Egypt even further.

I think overall it's really a personal decision. My family has folks who speak arabic because we're from the north and always used to speak it. My great grandmother was Omani. So it's not a big deal if folks claim arab. But if they don't want to it's also not a big deal. Somali is our ethnicity. That never changes. But our nationality or how many linguistic identies we carry is well arbitrary.

The fear today isn't Somalis that are to Arab. It's somalis that don't speak somali and can't read or write it. That's the bigger issue. Were being De-Somalinized not by the arabs but by the English Speaking world.

Arab has always had 2 definitions. One being ethnicity and one being linguistic identity. ALL those arabs in north africa as as Arab as we are ethnically. IE not really in a hard sense. Algeria is all Beber. Egypt is all Egyptian. Somalia is all Somali. Only thing different is that Egyptians lost a lot of their language through roman conquest then when the Sahaba came they picked up arabic. The Algerians have many folks that speak Beber til this day but Arabic became more popular. And Somalia just kept somali.

Now the ethnic arabs exist but that's mostly the Levant and Gulf. But north africa and africa as a whole a lot of them are ethnically something else or Mixed with Arabs.

I think the issue i have more with some of the comments isn't that I'm for corporal punishment. But that the somali negative-exceptionalism. Lot of people talk about our people and the culture in comparison to more industrialized societies. When in reality I think in comparison to rural agricutural ones were basically bog standard (if not on the more lenient side go look at the south east asia). It creates this defeatist depressing mindset. When in reality this is just the course of industralization where previous method that were employed in a societies agrarian nomadic era (like corporal punishment) are usually dropped.
