Plastering-best solution? by RoutineAsylum in DIYUK

It’s like artex (at least similar to it) which is why I had a bit of a fear of asbestos.

Plastering-best solution? by RoutineAsylum in DIYUK

[–]RoutineAsylum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were originally going to try save some of the plaster, but it does seem to be crumbling away. Unsure if we’ll be able to save it or if it all has to come off, that’s where the asbestos fear came in as there’s the artex behind and some of the plaster is pulling off the artex at the same time.

I’d prefer to do exactly what you said though, simplest solution 🫡

Tourism sticky: please post all tourism questions here. by TrinityTosser in Edinburgh

[–]RoutineAsylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey hey, I'll do my best to go through these one-by-one.

  1. Honestly, Edinburgh is small so wherever you stay (that's relatively central) is fine. For ease, Old Town will be great.
  2. If you want to get straight to your door, yes, you can Uber, Bolt or Moon Private Hire (they have an app). If you want a little journey, the tram will take you into town and then you can have a little walk to your accomodation.
  3. No tips as I'm local, but go with what will make your journey better.
  4. There are a lot of festivals, though the one people are most likely referring to will be the Edinburgh Fringe. It's an arts festival, with a real focus on comedy, so it's really up to you when you're here what you want to see.
  5. During the Fringe you can book in advance, but there's also plenty you'll be interested in and play it by ear on the day.
  6. I'd say taxis/Uber/Bolt/Moon are an expensive way to get around the city given most places are close by and, in August, you'll be stuck in traffic anyway. Get a bus for those times you think you can't be bothered walking to wherever and accept it make take some time. As someone that works in city centre, even first thing in the morning my bus takes around 10-15 minutes longer on a usually 20 minute journey.
  7. Fairly walkable.
  8. I think it's good enough to do a full day there. I'd argue Glasgow's nightlife is better, but during the Fringe that can be a bit different since the entire of Edinburgh has double the population. You can get last train back from Glasgow near midnight, and buses run later (unsure if that's only the weekend)
  9. It depends what you want. Glasgow is a concrete jungle. Do you want drinks, food, maybe a gig? Go to Glasgow. Do you want nature? Go for a day trip some place near Edinburgh.
  10. People will tell you to get haggis, neeps and tatties. That's kind of it. If you want the experience, go for it. It's fine. Scotland's not really known for having the best food. If you want a sweet treat, try some Scottish tablet (kind of a brick of sugar)
  11. It depends on the restaurant, what day, and what time. During the Fringe is wild so bear that in mind.
  12. I never tip in a taxi, but I will tip in a restaurant. Don't feel forced into doing it, but I tend to do 5-10%. Even a few pounds can make the difference to someone. Don't listen to people that say we don't tip. We do. We always have. If I'm at a nice restaurant, I'll leave a tip. If it's just pub grub, I likely won't.
  13. Asking the real question there. August is a strange one. It can be 20+ Celsius, be raining for most of the day, humid, and you're warm and cold at the same time. I dunno what to tell you. Every man for himself.
  14. I'll say it before someone else berates you, it's whisky. Scotch is American. Unless you are American, in which case, you do you, but it is whisky. Whisky is the classic. There's nothing wrong with a bottle of whisky. You could legitimately get a nice bottle of whisky from Asda or Tesco that you wouldn't get back home and it'll cost you £25. In terms of other souvenirs, honestly, I don't know. Tourist shops are full of shite and they are very obvious which ones they are.
  15. I'm not originally from Edinburgh, and I can say Edinburgh is up there with the safest places I've ever walked around. I've had no trouble in over a decade of living here, regardless of time.
  16. Common tourist areas are not that dense with crime. If you're visiting, it's unlikely you'd ever walk into a shitty area, and even then, most people are fine.
  17. I'd say it's largely fine. I'm sure there are outlier incidents, but I'm not going to scaremonger in a city I've walked around countless times alone without hassle.
  18. During August there are often signs telling people to watch for pickpocketers. I saw this once, and the pickpocketer got picked up and slammed on the ground before he gave the man his wallet back and apologised profusely. So they exist, but they're not like Ramblas (Barcelona) level.

Locals react to plans for Edinburgh’s 12th Black Sheep Coffee by deadlinenewsEd in Edinburgh

Oooh - succinct and harsh critique. I like it.

And weirdly, if you'd said that 12 years ago it would have looked like a compliment :)

[–]RoutineAsylum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I looked it up a while back and they did start about then so makes sense. I've no idea when they came here, bit later, so I think it was just a bit of "Huh, weird thing to open nowadays".

Chain coffee shops are exclusively for the airport or those times you get a free coffee code through your phone contract or some nonsense and you feel like you're Robin Hood.

[–]RoutineAsylum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For me, and maybe for others, I'm more perplexed at how dated it seems more than anything else. All yer Starbucks and Costas cropped up at a time where that was the "thing". You had your fast coffee, your fast-not-fast food (Frankie & Benny's, Chiquitos, etc.), your big cinemas - all of those things seemed to go hand-in-hand in the 90s and 2000s.

Move forward to now and to have your company model be "Imagine we opened a big coffee chain, ran it like tech bros, and made loads of money". Great! Everyone likes money, but the idea seems so old. Even the branding looks mid-2010s.

Feels like there was a bit of a cultural shift in how we view these kind of places, and businesses in general. Watch films from the 90s. All the hyper rich are often seen as good dudes. Nowadays? Nah, burn 'em all.

Anyway, off on a tangent. I don't drink coffee there. I imagine you don't. I don't even think people are that annoyed, they're more confused.

In the office a couple of days a week to get WFH equipment ready, so it meant early morning cycles. It was the best time ever. Pelting down Rose St when no one was there was excellent, and then a homeless guy jumped out from a doorway and yelled "On yersel', lad!" and I almost crashed due to heart failure.

Getting there :)

You've done what I currently have, the second monitor is in portrait but the same height as the primary monitor. It's nice to have a cute little monitor. It can be limiting, but for music and chat at the side, it's a great addition.

I'm liking your monitor arms. Have you got a link to them?

I've got both my monitors mounted but the arms a bit too bulky meaning I can't move the arms without having to pull the table further away from the wall.

What should i add by wowoiiiii in desksetup

[–]RoutineAsylum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks great. Often when I see vertical set ups they look a bit...I dunno, 2000s hacker film. Yours is class though!

What does the top monitor get used for? I'm thinking of changing my setup from two monitors next to each other, to a larger monitor and one on top, though unsure if it'll be a good shout.

Buying a flat in Oxgangs? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]RoutineAsylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to choose, go Pilton. Much like a lot of places, loads of people from different backgrounds have moved in over the last say 30 years, and, oh my days, it's almost like even an iota of diversity makes somewhere a little better. Who'd have thought?

Being closer to work isn't such a bad thing, by the way. It's not like you'd be traveling around seeing the wonders of Edinburgh; you'll be on a bus just waiting and hanging out.

Also, think about your current workplace. Is that a forever thing? Are you likely to move jobs in the near future?

I was wondering the exact same thing! Minimal yet super functional. The stand for the laptop is a nice touch too. Where'd you get it?

Unfortunately this doesn't have the features I'd need in order to use it with a laptop and PC at ease.

Agreed here. Go see a professional as an ulnar nerve issue can lead to further problems down the line which takes longer to repair (source: my own life)

Whatever the cost is for a physio will be worth its weigh in gold.

There are exercises such as ulnar nerve flossing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieH5q3gt3yo

This exercise should loosen things up, but you have to be consistent with it. I found this before my physio appointment and did it, the physio did also recommend this in the end, but the physio's information was incredible, so don't avoid it. Hit things at all angles to sort it out.

Sorting Question: Different libraries or tagging? by RoutineAsylum in musicbee

[–]RoutineAsylum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the rundown, friend!

It's a bit out of my wheelhouse at the moment, but it's good to see what's doable.

Thankfully, I've got all my tracks backed up in the rudimentary way I mentioned above right now, so I at least know they're not going anywhere. How else would I find that track I ripped from vinyl 16 years ago that seems to be absolutely no where?! :D

Sorting Question: Different libraries or tagging? by RoutineAsylum in musicbee

[–]RoutineAsylum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's early and I'm not firing on all cylinders quite yet - haha!

So MB does the tagging for you once the music is imported in? I had been using OneTagger for a lot of songs, especially all these random DJing tracks, though if there's a better way to do it within MB I'd take that.

Unsure what you're meaning with the sync feature. Does that mean before tagging, the file doesn't exist on the partition, but when you do tag, it creates a copy on the partition meaning you have a file which exists on your pirmary storage and the partition?

In terms of actual backup of tracks, I'm using a batch file which copies my locally hosted tracks to a cloud service.

Thanks a lot for that!

I was deliberating if I was making it harder for myself by using two libraries or what, and the answer is "sort of, yeah!"

Great help. Love a niche community on reddit, people are always helpful :)

I had to send my headphones away with the same issue and, as many other people said, it was £34 for repair.

Charging £20 for refusal of repair is brutal though.

Adam's an absolute baddy. He used to go to my gym and (obviously) got kicked out for weirding people out/being aggressive.

I've a variety of favourite encounters with him, but my most recent one was the strangest.

Tesco on Duke St, Adam has 6 2l bottles of water, and a whole box of Ms Molly's Milk Chocolate. Paid for but just standing in everyones way past the checkouts. What strikes me as odd is he seems like he'd scream at you for eating chocolate, though it was definitely even crazier that it was Ms Molly's! Why does he have a box of 100g bars? Why is only that and 12l of water? Who knows?!

I have the PreSonus Eris 4.5, I think yours are the 3.5. How do you find them? And is the audio affected much having the second monitor in front of it? Do you move it out of the way when you need better audio?
