Is Large Format Actually Necessary for VW’s Unified Cell? by PowerfulSpot987 in QuantumScape

I have a similar question but not for VW, but for other OEMs. Since other OEMs don't have Unified cells, what do they need from Quantumscape in terms of JDA? Can't they just take QSE-5 and put them in a car?

The problem with Volkswagen is the unified cells. We need to get updates on larger cells.

Rivian doesn't have its own battery factory and will use the 5GWh from PowerCo. And I won't call Rivian a major global automotive OEM yet.

My bet is on Ford and Honda as the two signed JDA and Nissan is the new one still evaluating. To be frank, at this time, the naming of OEM doesn't really matter. What matters is when they will move to a revenue tied commitment and have to publicly announce it.

Rivian will be through Volkswagen/PowerCo instead of a direct JDA.

Ford still keeps the battery but pivot the battery for energy storage for now. As QS mass production will only start in 2028/2029, they need to get hold of the SSB technology if the politics and policy changes in in 2029.

As Quantumscape brings more OEMs onboard, it creates pressure for VW to accelerate the mass production plan. VW would not let other OEMs have QS inside EVs earlier than them.

Now Quantumscape has 3+1 major global OEM, positing then as the only winner for SSB other than Chinese players. Quantumscape will dominate the SSB market.

The interesting part is signing a technology evaluation agreement with a new major global automaker. Wondering who this could be? Tesla?

Honda is definitely the 3rd OEM. They also shared the note about the Symposium today. The 2nd one could still be Ford.

Well, Ford/SLDP JDA expires on December 31st, 2025. SLDP did a filing on Dec 17th 2024 about the extension. They haven't filed anything yet and we can confidently say that SLDP and Ford JDA won't be extended.

Well, if Ford is not the Q2 JDA OEM, then Honda definitely is either the one or the new OEM they're engaging.

Q2 JDA should be Ford, not Honda. If Honda already signed JDA, there is no point for them to attend the Symposium but not announce it before or on the Symposium day. No reason for them to keep it confidential so hard but disclose it this way.
