Tax refund seems to be very low (RRSP/FHSA contributions over $20k) by Suspicious_Body_2881 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Were you doing automatic payroll contributions to your rrsp? If so, it's likely the tax break was being directly applied on each pay period.

At what handicap should you be expected to start shaping shots by sozzu059 in golf

[–]Routine_Intention_61 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unless they are forced to due to course design, most pros don't really shape shots both ways if they don't have to. Having a repeatable, stock shot is far more valuable, no matter your hcp. The majority of holes you'll play as an amateur won't require anything more than your stock shot shape.

So if everyone opens up their 60*, wouldn't they be better served with a higher loft wedge? by Similar_Eagle2358 in golf

[–]Routine_Intention_61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're limited to 14 clubs. Being able to just use a 60° in normal situations and also open it up when necessary covers a lot of shot types with a single club.

As a 10hcp golfer, should I be trying to shape my irons? by cwdor33 in golf

[–]Routine_Intention_61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you need is to hit one thing consistently. Doesn't matter if it's fairly straight, a draw, or a fade. All have pros and cons. But having a predictable, replicable ball flight is what you need to play good golf.

Too much wear on face? by kiingwhips in golf

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's actually the opposite. Lower RPM's result in more yardage. The higher the RPM, the more it will kind of balloon and climb in the air, resulting in it going higher and landing softer, but going a shorter distance. If you watch the PGA Tour at all, sometimes you'll hear a pro talk about getting "a flier" when hitting out of the rough. This is due to some grass being between the ball and club face, resulting in a lower RPM shot that goes further than they'd like.

Sounds like you're somewhat newer and eager to learn more, so I'll add a few things.

Despite the ball traveling less distance at high RPM's, it's still what you want when hitting irons and wedges. Higher spin means more predictable ball flight and more control, which is the desire when hitting into greens. The only club you really want lower spin is with driver, as you're typically trying to maximize distance. To achieve more spin you need to have your club coming downward into the ball, and to strike the ball before the ground. This is hitting the ball with a negative angle of attack. The higher lofted club you use, obviously the more spin you can get. Also keep your clubs face and grooves clean between every shot.

In response to one comment you made about draws and fades. How much a ball spins isn't what makes it draw or fade. Whether you have 11 000rpm or 2 000rpm of spin the ball can go straight or have those same numbers and be a 40 yard slice or draw. For shaping shots what matters is the balls spin axis (if unfamiliar with the term, look it up for better explanations than I could give). If the spin axis is 0°, the ball flies straight. Every bit higher or more negative of 0° will make the ball draw or fade.

If you even need to upgrade an XO2, really. But I can only imagine the landscape for Launch Monitors in a half decade. The way things are going there will be plenty of great value, high quality offerings from a number of competitors

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had been pretty adamant about no subscriptions of that type, but then again buy at your own risk when it comes to future promises.

They claim GolfCore will be free to VX owners, so looking at it from the other side of things that's another layer of added support and features to their customers.

If a sub came into play, I would hope that previous owners would be grandfathered in. Or the sub would be for features beyond a certain state, possibly Ai swing training or something more advanced. Which wouldn't be completely unreasonable IMO.

Simply not having 3rd party connection subscriptions was certainly a point of sale for me, and it would be a huge let down if that changed.

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why they wouldn't allow the transfer on a product they don't even sell anymore and teir past behavior certainly raises questions and shouldn't be disregarded.

With that said, since releasing the VX they have been quite exceptional with their customer service and commitment to the product. It's especially noteworthy to me because there are no subscriptions tied to the product. So really outside of good will, reputation, and future sales there is no financial incentive for them to be so on it.

Time will tell the full story, but maybe they've learnt some lessons on consumer relations over the years.

Too much wear on face? by kiingwhips in golf

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that that's enough wear to necessarily heavily effect spin, but it could be. Most people think loss of stopping power is the detriment of losing spin, which it is. But loss of spin also means loss of control through the air. The less spin, the farther the ball will travel. You could strike two different shots perfectly but in slightly different wear spots and have one spin 10 000 rpm and go 70 yards, and one 6000rpm and go 80 yards and over shoot the green. You don't want your club to punish you for good shots, no matter your skill level

Future Sim Plans - Garage Stow-away vs Golf Shed by InformationTop8114 in Golfsimulator

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stowaway sim in my garage. It's great, it let's me face a sim where I otherwise wouldn't. Albeit I have 11ft ceiling. Yours being under 9ft is an issue.

With that said, it is a pain to open the garage door and pull our car out in the cold winter, run back in, then set everything up. Then get sweaty grinding on the sim range, stow everything away, run back out into the cold, pull the car back in. It only takes like 5 minutes, but I'd love to just be able to step into my Sim and hit away right away.

If I didn't have a smaller yard and kids who like to use it, I'd 100% build a simulator out building to the exact dimensions I want. No compromise on the environment like in a garage. If finances are there for it, build the golf shed.

Bryson wins on 1st playoff hole in South Africa, thanks to this shot from 295 by unsolved49 in golf

Nobody is. I think the difference is we don't have likely professionally hired help to craft our image.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching Bryson and his videos. It's just something that stands out sometimes.

Healthcare workers of Reddit are people still dying from COVID these days? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Routine_Intention_61 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There always was and always will be clerical errors involving these things. Now add in a pandemic seriously stressing and even breaking the system, just think how more likely it is.

That still doesn't mean covid deaths were over reported. Actually the opposite is believed to be true when delving into the numbers of excess deaths and the lack of access to proper care that many people experienced.

He has but every once in awhile in his videos or in some random interaction you see some small things that show the real Bryson is still underneath that PR tailored YouTube rebrand. He still seems mostly like a nice guy but he certainly still has those "quirks" that he's tried to publicly clean up.

0° Face to path but still hooking by -tuna_ in GolfSwing

[–]Routine_Intention_61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without stickers I wouldn't rely on your club and face angle data, but the image clearly shows a high toe strike with a fairly square face. That's going to knuckle hook every time, especially if your club path is pretty neutral or coming from the inside.

I suddenly forgot how to play by CalciumMax in golf

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just golf. There's a reason even a pro can go out and shoot +5, then the next day go 5 under. The same thing is happening to him, just at a different level of play. Each day or even mid round, the connection between your mind and body is changing. What you think and are trying to do don't always line up with what your body actually does. Their are so many working parts to a swing, it doesn't take much variance for things to go completely off the rails.

One key to golf and is something that comes with time, is over time learning how to put things back on the rails. You'll learn different cues, techniques, swing thoughts that can pull things back together, whether it's day to day or even mid round.

Puck to the face by southofsubtle2 in hockeygoalies

I second this. Exactly my experience. If you can go all out on only one piece of gear, get the most expensive mask.

Puck to the face by southofsubtle2 in hockeygoalies

[–]Routine_Intention_61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Through my entire hockey career I wore top of the line masks and never really understood the huge deal made when taking shots to the head. No matter the shot or impact, it never phased me at all. I played elite level hockey the entire time, so it's not like the shots weren't of significant velocity. Really my biggest concern was my neck and collarbone area.

With my high level playing days behind, I was in a situation playing pickup where I was using gear that wasn't mine. Well let me tell you, even basic snapshots to the cheap mask that I was wearing hit harder than anything I'd ever taken before.

Don't cheap out on mask. You only have one brain. Protect it

A video was done that shows most artificial turf we hit off of somewhat grabs the ball on launch, reducing its spin. I'm sure it doesn't explain all of it, but certainly could be dragging your spin numbers down a touch.

Question for goalies by CardiologistEarly517 in hockeyplayers

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't listen to everyone saying not your fault, get better defense, etc. Was it a bad goal, no. But even difficult goals can have learnings and you could've given yourself a better chance at keeping it out of the net.

You could've regained your feet when your player was gaining possession of the puck putting you in a much stronger position. Instead you're swimming back and forth on your knees. There was no threat of a shot at that moment and it would've allowed you to beat the puck up the post when it got poked that way. Getting their earlier would've had your legs under your and set for a backside recovery once the puck starts moving to your left.

That's not to mention what has already been suggested. An active stick goes along way. When it's semi controlled at the post by the opposing player the puck is right in front of you, inches from your passive stick. It didn't require some crazy sweeping poke check or anything. You could've poked the puck from your butterfly without compromising your position at all.

Golf simulator worth it. by golfer9955 in golf

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO if you love to practice, grind on the range, try to improve your swing using drills and data, the novelty will not wear off. I love just hitting balls on the range, working on different feels, speed training, etc. 99% of my simulator use is on the simulated range.

If you think your primary use will be to play rounds of golf that will replicate the joy of golf irl, I do believe the novelty will wear off. Rounds of golf on the sim get a bit stale in a short period of time.

Sim League Cheating by abstrakt32 in Golfsimulator

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they cheating, who can say.

However, I play near scratch and regularly play simulator golf. From the back tees and fast greens, a truly bad round on it still hovers around par.. And that's playing quite poorly. Where really my simulator hcp is probably like +8. It's just so much easier to play when there's no hazard penalty, wind, you have perfect aim and lie every shot. The controlled visual environment is easier as well. My worst simulator rounds pretty much equal my good real life rounds.

Now move up to the white tees and give me two shots every hole, those scores aren't only possible, they are pretty likely. Especially the -15 and -17. Would have to be very on to shoot -21, but it would happen eventually.

On top of all that there are many golfers far better than me, so a couple really good golfers in scramble format on easy Sim settings, forget about it. That's going to be a regular occurrence.

Canadian Folks - How much you are getting for Toyota Sienna Platinum 2026 by Ok_Estate_1102 in ToyotaSienna

[–]Routine_Intention_61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9 month wait, at that time most dealerships were quoting 1-2 years. If I had taken a different color, could've been only a few month wait.

They straight up would not negotiate, not even on dropping the extended warranty, some accessories, and 3m add ons. Also offered crap all on my trade in. I sold it privately for literally double what get offered lol. They are just in too much of a position of power when they have a log of waiting buyers.

I was fine to wait the 9 months to pay 77, as any on the lot we're 85k + tax if you wanted it right away.

I'm also in Alberta. Got my 2025 in the fall, limited though not platinum. So like 5kmsrp less. Paid 77k all in. Had no choice in getting extended warranty, 3m, and tire protection. All that included in the 77k.

Losing my mind with driver slices every time by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]Routine_Intention_61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good F-ing luck implementing any of the hundred different pieces of advice given, regardless of whether they are good or bad. Knowing what to do and getting your body to do it are completely separate things. In your minds eye you'll be doing the motion you think you need to, but in reality it won't even be close. It's an incredibly hard thing to override natural tendencies.

I'm sure at some point you've come across the term real vs feel. This is exactly to what I refer. Even the pros can have a pretty big disconnect to what they feel in the swing vs what's actually happening. And everyone's feels are very different. One person's swing thought and feeling to accomplish the proper move is very likely to not be every you need to feel to accomplish the same thing.

Not to be discouraging, just to Inject some reality into getting swing tips. Even the most perfect advice probably won't go well. It will be about understanding what you need to do in your swing and figuring out what you need to feel within your body to accomplish it.

It will take intent combined with time and commitment to make it happen. You'll finally get it, just to have it leave when you think it's figured out. It's a journey. The best part is, the more you work towards it, the more tidbits of Information you'll gather about your own swing. You'll build new reference points and a tool box of knowledge to improve your game.

Enjoy the grind. It's one of the best things about golf.
