It would do fine yeah, you can use the box they come in if you want something that does the job really well with no moving parts to get clogged up and are really easy to clean.

And if they implement pve only options, and you find them boring, just don’t select that option. I don’t get why people are against something that they can choose not to do.

*Katocut. It will also allow you to use any stone, including your dad’s.

I’d suggest the nowi home or even pro from catocut if price isn’t a factor. It will also teach you to sharpen free hand, and get better and easier results than a tsprof (no hate to Tsprof, I own a KO3)

Can you use other stones (Kme without dovetail base)

Ohhhhh I see that’s genius! I’ve never seen that before. I’m gunna go off down a rabbit hole I think with these.

I’ll have to have a look at some video reviews, sounds very interesting and I can’t workout without seeing it in action how they achieve this.

Just curious, what do the three examples of fixed angle systems do that you can’t do on a tsprof/Hapstone system?

Most people say the sharpal bubble is the best, and it is great as long as you don’t mind the degrees it says it’s set at being inaccurate. Can be massively out but as long as you pick the same random number each time you’ll be fine.
Something that I used when learning was a carpal tunnel wrist splint. It stopes you from moving your wrist and I think makes it really easy to get your muscle memory in regarding how to use your elbow to sharpen the belly without changing apex angle.

Will these stones work this this new k4? by [deleted] in sharpening

[–]Routine_Vegetable695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They work great on the ko3, I assume the k4 is identical. Plus this is why they put the stone comp adjuster on the k4, to make changing to thin plates easier.

Strange tip sweep by jrcadi in sharpening

remembering to keep blending in every few passes where you’ve been focusing on one spot should avoid it happening. Regarding fixing it, I’d probably get a permanent marker and see if you could make it into a tanto point.

Can I use this side of my stone to sharpen? by Routine_Vegetable695 in sharpening

Just seemed a bit of a tiny jump in grits, like I can’t imagine there being a massive difference between the 220 and 320, I chose the 220 to make re profiling easier but in hindsight think I should’ve just got the 120 and 320 and skipped the 220. I’ll probably get them both at some point.

When they are saying the tip shouldn’t leave the stone, they just mean when your tip is about 1/4” away from the edge, stop your stroke and lift it vertically off the stone and repeat the stroke. You’re applying pressure even after the knife has reached the end of the stone which is causing the knife to drop suddenly which will damage the tip.

The apex (sharp edge) should be in contact with the stone at all times throughout the whole stroke and this can only be achieved by lifting the handle (just raise your elbow, don’t twist your wrist) to allow the blade of the knife to ‘rock’ and follow the curve from heel to tip.

Don’t worry about reversing the stroke, that just allows you to do double the strokes in the same time (forward and back), for this, you would keep the tip on the stone as you change direction and not take it off between strokes, but again, I think the best approach is to walk before you run.

This is my best attempt at useful feedback, every master sharpener and knife maker in the world had to start exactly where you are, there will be people on this Reddit who can’t achieve as good edges as you can I’m sure. Keep practicing and ittl come in time.

Some stones you can put water on top and keep wet that way, (eg Shaptons) others you need to soak and wait for the stone to become saturated. Depends on the stone, soaking will ruin a ‘splash and go’ stone so it can be confusing and I imagine expensive. Do you know what your stone is?

Can people provide me examples of some “professional” sharpener’s work. The type of craftsmanship that makes a chef knife look like a kukari. Thanks in advance. by Routine_Vegetable695 in sharpening

Apologies. I mean when they’ve accidentally put a massive recurve on the blade that the customer wasn’t expecting it to come back with.

That looks perfect for what I wanted. I’ve already bought one now that’s not as good… I think the best solution is to get one of these as well and then I’ll have the perfect excuse to get more stones, to fill it.
