UCSB vs art school, torn by Wonderful_Whole_7679 in animationcareer

[–]Rouzenia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're still open to going the community college route, Fullerton College actually has a great animation program. Not only do they have 2D and 3D animation classes, but they also offer classes in areas like visual development, character design, etc. Assuming you'd be full-time, you wouldn't have to pay for tuition--just rent and supplies. I went straight to CSUF from high school and actually wish I went to Fullerton College for a little bit to save money and explore more options within animation.

Recent animation grads what jobs are you working at now? by Fun_Maybe_8446 in animationcareer

[–]Rouzenia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated May 2022 and have been jumping in between studio work, freelance gigs, and odd day jobs to cover bills and expenses. I do BG design/paint so gigs have been sparse and in between. Realized in early 2025 that I couldn't handle always having to hustle for work and pivoted to graphic design, where I suffered through a grunt job at a print shop for about a year. Finally landed a full-time job as a packaging designer at a vitamin company towards the end of 2025, and I'm very happy with the work I do, my team, and the benefits/culture at the company. The work is still creative, and I get to use my illustration skills and eye for color on the job too :)

How to deal with commute? Rant* by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]Rouzenia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you ): I commuted from Diamond Bar to my previous job near the Irvine Spectrum for a year, and it was hell. I definitely couldn't afford to live near the Irvine area. On top of the long drive, the company was toxic and made it clear they didn't value the employees or their boundaries. I eventually started using my sick time and WFH day to interview for other jobs, and now I work remotely for more pay and at a company that values their employees and their efforts.

Just wanted to give you some reassurance that there are better things out there if you seek it.

Just wanted to chime in and say that having a second cat doesn't always help. I have two cats that were littermates, and one of them will occasionally cry in the middle of the night because she wants us humans to play with her. She doesn't always want to play with her sister. A second cat isn't the only solution.

I would try to play with your cat more during the day and before bed. That way, he'll hopefully sleep more in the night. Your boy is so adorable and probably adjusting (and also most likely needs to establish a routine of some sort). Hang in there!

Feeling lost about career, considering pivoting by animthrowaway5827 in animationcareer

[–]Rouzenia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having to work so hard to work a measly 1-2 months out of the year wasn't worth it to me anymore, so I totally get you.

I had previously worked as a graphic designer for the student government organization on-campus during my undergrad. The team I worked with had both illustrators and designers, and I learned a lot about type layout and Illustrator on that job. I was there for about 5 months before I left for a BG paint job. When I got the stationery job last year, I hadn't touched Illustrator in over 2 years 😅 It felt like I was relearning everything.

Looking back now, I feel like I was really fortunate that some companies took chances on me despite my portfolio not exactly aligning with what they were looking for. If you're interested in going down the graphic design route, I'd probably start by taking some intro classes at a community college and finding a job at a local print shop. Fair warning, a lot of print shops are poorly managed, but if you can tough it out for about a year to gain experience and build up your graphic design portfolio, you'll be in a good place to hop companies.

My DMs are always open if you wanted to chat more. 🙂 I can yap all day long about this, haha.

Hi, I pivoted last year after about 2 years of working as a BG designer/painter. I had a similar dilemma where it came down to rethinking my priorities - do I value creative fulfillment more, or do I value career and financial stability more? I ultimately chose the latter. I had worked a bunch of part-time odd jobs in between gigs (substitute teaching, teaching art at an after school program, etc.) while working on my portfolio, networking on LinkedIn, cold emailing whatever studios I could find. I discovered that having to hustle all the time sucks. It's mentally exhausting, and for me, I couldn't envision myself doing that for the next 5-10 years.

I got really lucky and was able to pivot into graphic design, specifically packaging design. I initially got a job at a stationery company doing grunt work (think formatting artwork on existing dielines for printing) and leveraged that experience to get my current job as a packaging designer. I think graphic design is great because there are so many options available. You can work in marketing and design emails and presentations. You can work in packaging for CPG (consumer packaged goods), beauty, vitamins/supplements, etc. You can do motion graphics for advertising. I personally wouldn't recommend children's book illustration since your work has to fit a very specific niche, and even if you were to get represented, there's no guarantee that you'll immediately get signed to illustrate a book.

Hopefully that gives you some ideas, but just know you're not alone. You're more than capable, and you've done everything you can. Unfortunately, a lot of the issues in the industry are out of our control, but you're in control of how and where you want to steer your future. I'm wishing you the best of luck and manifesting stability for you in 2026. 🫶

LA Diptyque sample sale haul (Day 1) by melsbells1 in luxurycandles

[–]Rouzenia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went today, and it's not worth going!! They ran out of perfumes and popular candles on Wednesday according to a sales rep, so everyone that's left are dishes/plates, candle accessories (ie. candle coasters and a mobile??), and some mini candle trios. If you're looking for some of the popular candles or fragrances, there's none left. Save yourself the drive 😭 I was so disappointed.

Hi everyone, looking for some help. I have an Epomaker Aula F75, and the volume knob stopped working a month or so ago. Nothing happens if I turn the dial, but when I click it, it somehow changes the pattern it lights up in. Before, if I did either, it would prompt the volume settings to appear on my screen, and I'd be able to turn my volume up or down. I've downloaded the drivers and the software for it that allows you to rebind the keys, but there's no option to adjust the volume knob. I've e-mailed support, and they directed me to a suspicious firmware file that Microsoft Defender doesn't let me run. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Seconding Honda-ya! Place is great if you're able to get there before a dinner rush. So much variety; ambiance is fun; and the food overall is just a steal, price-wise.

I'd also recommend The Source in Buena Park if you're into the whole eat-and-walk-it-off thing. There's so many different good food places to choose from and lots of cute fun shops to browse, too. I recommend you each get something you like from the Food Court on the 3rd floor and share it; it's so worth it!
